FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:22 ΠΠ Page 1 Your electronic study partner!

What is the iebook? The iebook is my personal study partner that helps me with my assigned homework, dictation, vocabulary, reading and revision in order to be prepared for my tests and my self-evaluation in a fun and interesting way. With my iebook I enjoy learning English with games, videos and stories. When can I use my iebook? I can use my iebook every day to study my homework, practise for my tests and even in my free time by playing games, reading and listening to the English language. How can I use it? My iebook is my personal study partner to use at home and, preferably, alongside my English coursebooks. By placing the disc in my computer drive, the programme automatically starts from the main menu and I can select any activity with a simple click. The toolbar at the bottom of the screen helps me write, colour, zoom in and out, print and save what I have worked on. Main Menu 2 This is my toolbar

FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:23 ΠΠ Page 4 Modules In the main menu of my iebook I will find all the modules of my coursebook. When I click on each module, I see all the pages of my book for that module. I can easily click on the page I m doing in class or the one that I want to revise. Units By clicking on the page/unit I m interested in, I will see that all the activated exercises of my iebook are automatically circled in blue. 4

After clicking on the activity that I am interested in, I can easily listen to the passages and the dialogues related to the task, work on vocabulary and grammar exercises, learn grammar theory through my grammar reference and grammar owl buttons or even practise my new vocabulary by using the unit wordlists. I can also read and listen to comprehension exercises, do research for my ICT projects and practise what I have learnt by playing my iebook s modular games. Let s take a closer look at a unit! Let s start from my new vocabulary. First, I click on the horizontal activity at the top of the page. Then, I click on the picture I want and then click on the headphones to listen to the word and then repeat. By clicking on the ABC button I can make the words appear and disappear. Learn how to pronounce words correctly I can also use the unit wordlist to revise my vocabulary and practise pronunciation. By clicking on the wordlist button the unit wordlist appears. By clicking on the headphones button I first listen to the word and then repeat it. 5

Learn what the words mean with my iebook While I am in the wordlist, I can click on the translation button to find out what the words mean in my language. Once I have read all the words, I can click on the translation button again. The translations disappear and now I can practise the meaning of each word on my own. To check if I know the right meaning, I click on the button next to each word. The translation of the word will appear again. Once I have done this, I continue by clicking on the words button and all the words in English will disappear. I take a look at the word in my language and say the word in English. I can then check myself by clicking on the headphones button and listening to the word in English or even by clicking on the number to make the word appear. By clicking on the picture button a picture flashcard of the word appears. Practise spelling I click on both the words and translation buttons to make the English words and their translations disappear. I then click on the headphones, listen to the word and write it down in my notebook. This is a great way for me to learn the spelling of each word and to revise. 6

FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:23 ΠΠ Page 7 Practise reading aloud The iebook has karaoke exercises so I can have fun and improve my pronunciation and reading skills at the same time. By clicking on the dialogue exercise, the animation of the dialogue appears. In order to read and listen to the dialogue I click on the dialogue button and the dialogue will appear. There are several ways for me to listen to the dialogue with the iebook. There is an audio player beside the dialogue. By clicking on the audio player play and pause buttons, I can pause and repeat after each sentence. I can also click on each speech bubble and listen to it separately. I can make the sentences disappear by clicking on the text button in order to listen to the dialogue without reading the text. When I click on the video button I can watch the animation of the dialogue. The abc button gives me the option to watch the video with or without subtitles. By using the video player I have the option to the play the video, pause or stop at anytime. 7

FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:23 ΠΠ Page 8 How can I check if I have understood the dialogue? There are two extra exercises that I can only find in my iebook by clicking on the activities button. In the first exercise, I can click on the headphones to listen to the dialogue and select the correct picture. Once I finish with this exercise, my iebook takes me directly to the next exercise. In the second exercise, sentences from the dialogue appear in random order and I have to place them in the correct order, by dragging the sentence into the correct speech bubble. By clicking on the dialogue button I can return to the dialogue. How can I find the answers to the exercises in my iebook? Most of the answers are not given in my iebook. This encourages me to write everything in my notebook or even do the exercises orally. 8

Some matching exercises are active so that I can practise my vocabulary and grammar skills. In order to find the correct answers I have to solve the exercises on my own by clicking on any word/picture and dragging it to the right space. There are also sound effects that tell me if my answer is right or wrong. If my answer is wrong the word/picture bounces back into place. Learning grammar In every grammar exercise of my iebook I will always have two buttons that will help me understand my grammar theory. These two buttons are the book and the owl buttons. By clicking on the grammar book button my grammar theory appears. 9

By clicking on the owl button, animated flashcards appear that illustrate how to use the grammar theory I have just learned. Click on the arrows to go to the next or the previous flashcard. Listening exercises In the listening exercises I listen to the recording using the audio player and then write the answers in my notebook. I can correct myself by clicking on the tapescript button. 10

Songs With the iebook songs I can listen to the songs and sing along in karaoke style. By clicking on the buttons I can play, pause, and repeat or even click on the video button to watch the video of the song. 11

Complete my module Self-Check (Checkpoint) In this menu I can find revision tests for each module. I can do all the exercises on my own and be prepared for the class test. Extra units In the main menu of my iebook, I can find the following units: My Alphabet, Extras, Troll Tales!, Go Green!, Our School and Our World. By clicking on each unit of my iebook, I can open up the same page that exists in my coursebook. I can study, revise, and watch videos like I do in the main modules of my book. I can also find extra activities in the iebook for revision and extra practice in all language skills. 12

FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:23 ΠΠ Page 13 Games (Vocabulary & Grammar Games, Quizzes) In my iebook I can find games and quizzes revising each module. By playing the games I can practise grammar and vocabulary and have fun as well. Most of the games are timed so I can practise my knowledge as well as my speed. 13

FAIRYLAND iebook leaflet_int_fairyland iebook leaflet_int 27/06/2011 11:23 ΠΠ Page 14 Reader Videos In this menu I can find a favourite classic story of world literature and watch the animation of it. Before watching the video, by clicking on the vocabulary button, I can go through the vocabulary picture flashcards, using them to listen and repeat so that I will understand the story better. I can also play games and do exercises based on the text by clicking on the notepad button. I can watch the video with or without subtitles by clicking on the abc button. My dictionary (wordlist) In the main menu of my iebook, by clicking on the wordlist button I will find my personal electronic dictionary. I can search for each word in alphabetical order or even by module. I can listen to each word, see the correct spelling and a translation of each word. Many words also have pictures. By using the electronic dictionary I can improve my pronunciation, learn new vocabulary and revise before my lesson. 14

Suggested user plan for the iebook Everyday tasks: I study my vocabulary with the help of sound and images. I practise spelling and study unknown vocabulary (inner wordlists). I practise reading aloud (karaoke). I learn my grammar theory through the grammar book and then practise extensively through the grammar owl. I practise my speaking skills through model answers (headphones and audio players). I practise my listening skills through the listening activities and by reading and/or listening to the dialogues (tapescript and audio players). I use the interactive grammar and vocabulary exercises. I find suggested answers to written tasks so as to get ideas for my own projects (Portfolio). I practise new language through the videos of each unit. End of Module tasks: I check my progress through the revision module (Checkpoint). I listen to the songs to easily learn the vocabulary of each unit. I play the Quizzes, either on my own or with friends and family in order to recycle grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. In my free time: I use the interactive games to practise grammar and vocabulary (Vocabulary and Grammar Games). I watch the video of classical literature (Reader). Here, I can also find vocabulary exercises (Vocabulary button), comprehension exercises and games (reader tasks). 15
