Be sure to carefully complete all of the information in the form above question #1. The Ticket/Class # can be found in the schedule of classes and on my web page. The Class Name is CIS-101. This data is used to record your certificate of completion. You will have to retake the quiz if the form is not completed correctly! Notice: This Orientation Quiz is mandatory and must be completed by noon, May 23, 2016 Your necessary time commitment: This course is going to keep you very busy! This course is the equivalent of 54 lecture hours, i.e. 3 lecture hours/week, in a regular 18 week semester course. In any college course, for every lecture hour you should plan to spend at least 2 to 3 additional hours per week studying, reading, class preparation, homework, etc.. That is a total of 9 to 12 hours per week in a regular 18 week semester course. In a 6 week summer course, every week is equivalent to 3 weeks of an 18 week semester. Be aware that this means you should plan to spend at least 27 to 36 hours per week on this course. I hope that your personal schedule will allow for this. Read everything before doing anything! What is Distance Education Below is an excerpt from the Cerritos College Standards for Distance Educationbr prepared by the Technology-Based Learning Committee of the Cerritos College Faculty Senate

3 of 9 6/3/2016 5:44 PM Cerritos College is known as a leader in instructional technology. Of paramount importance to the college faculty, students, and administration is the issue of maintaining course quality standards. The purpose of this document is to unify existing college policies related to online instruction, to provide faculty with a resource for online instruction at Cerritos College, and to provide a framework for the management of instructional technologies. Distance Education Definition For the purpose of this document, this statement has been adapted from the title 5, Distance Education Guidelines for the California Community Colleges 55200, (July, 2007). Distance education means instruction in which the instructor and student are separated by distance and interact through the assistance of communication technology. Online and Hybrid Definitions Online: All instruction occurs online. Some instructors may require on-campus attendance for orientation, test taking, or to satisfy other course requirements. Access to e-mail and the Internet are required. S tudents may be required to complete work using e-mail, chat rooms, discussion boards, and other instructional tools. Online courses are designated as OL in the published class schedule. Hybrid: Hybrid courses include the combination of traditional in-class instruction with computer-based learning and other instructional technologies. Therefore, students will be required to attend live class meetings on campus as scheduled by the instructor, as well as complete work using e-mail, chat rooms, discussion boards, and other instructional tools. These courses are designated as Hybrid in the class schedule. Class attendance and participation is required and based upon assignments completed. This class is a 54 lecture hour equivalent class. Each completed assignment is equivalent to 3.6 hours of class attendance. Students who are absent in excess of 10% of the total class hours will be dropped from class. Missing two assignments is the equivalent to missing over 7 hours of class. You will be dropped for this. Anyone not maintaining cumulative 60% on assignments, quizzes and exams will be dropped from class. Communication 1. Our primary form of communication will be via email/myitlab Notifications. Be sure to check your email and the MyITLab class site daily for any message(s) from the instructor. 2. Your instructor will do the same and will try to respond to you within 24 hours. 3. All email messages sent to Mr. Negrete must include the following :

CIS-101 #20267 Summer 2016 Syllabus 4 of 9 Subject: CIS-101 Class ##### followed by a brief description of the message. This identifies you as one of my students. Without this in an email, I will probably just delete the email without looking at it. Signature at the bottom of your message: Your Name CIS-101 Class Number ##### Please note: messages without the above Subject & Signature will be returned/deleted. 4. I require that our communication be kept on a professional level. Please do not text me without including the data specified in #3 above. When people send messages without a Subject & Signature identifying themselves as a student in one of my classes, please include the class number, I don't know who they are and I typically delete the message. Read everything before doing anything! Textbooks: The books shown below are packaged/bundled together in the college bookstore. Your MyITLab Access Code will also be in the package. I strongly recommend that you buy the books in the Cerritos College bookstore. In the past, students trying to purchase this bundle online have found it difficult/impossible. The book on the right, "The Pearson Custom Program for CIS" is a customized book for the Cerritos College CIS department. It is not available through an online retailer. I know books are expensive, but, this is our attempt to save you money. This book is actually a subset of four other textbooks. Doing this saves you from having to buy six books. Instead, you only buy these three. Used books: Be careful when buying used books. The book bundle includes a MyITLab access code. Used books will not have this code. Buying used books will require you to buy the access code separately. The code can be purchased from the publisher. By the time you pay fur used books and the access code it may be more expensive. 6/3/2016 5:44 PM

You will find a couple of good YouTube videos there. Set Time Zone: Set the time zone to Pacific Time and Save the settings. 5. You must contact MyITLab Support for this help. If/when you send me an email asking for help with technical issues, I will simply refer you to MyITLab Support. Assignments: There are three types of assignments for this class: 1. Reading assignments from the "Technology In Action" book: see the Class Schedule below. 2. Chapter Exercises: these are chapter review questions from the reading assignments to be completed and submitted via MyITLab. 3. Microsoft Windows & Office assignments using the Go! with Microsoft Windows 8 Introductory and Custom Program for CIS Go! with Microsoft Office 2013 Vol. 1 books. Students will be required to complete assignments using Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 2013. All assignments must be submitted to the instructor via MyITLab. Assignments are not accepted via email. Assignments are not accepted after the deadline/due date & time. Assignment web pages are posted on the MyITLab class site for student access. All, except two, assignments will be available at 12 a.m. the first day of class. This provides students time to complete each assignment before the deadline posted on each assignment page. Almost all of the assignments have been prepared such that you can do and redo them as many times as you wish, until the deadline. I have done this to provide you the opportunity to earn the maximum possible points. Your final scores on all assignments is really up to you. Get started early! Due dates/deadlines are on assignment activities in MyITLab Look in each assignment folder to see the list of activities and corresponding

7 of 9 6/3/2016 5:44 PM deadlines/due dates. Assignments must be completed, including any necessary corrections, prior to the deadline. I strongly recommend that you submit assignments early. I have provided you the maximum amount of time available to complete assignments before deadlines. Do not wait to do the assignments. I do not accept technical issues as an excuse for not submitting assignments before the deadlines... especially for those people that wait until the day before a deadline to submit an assignment. Assignments close at, and cannot be accessed after, the deadline. Expectations It is expected that you will participate actively by maintaining communication with the instructor in class via e-mail, submitting assignments according to due dates listed on the assignment pages, and completing the assignments, including and necessary corrections, prior to the deadlines. Complete assigned readings as listed on the syllabus/assignment list, and responding to requests/questions by the instructor within 24 hours of receipt. Academic Honesty/Dishonesty Policy: Be sure to review and understand this policy. It can be found in the Cerritos College Catalog. The Cerritos College Catalog can be purchased in the college bookstore. It can also be viewed at: www.cerritos.edu. Final Comments: I believe all the information is here.
