Program Outline About the Program The Eastside Catholic spring break program introduces students to New York through the lenses of Catholic and immigrant experiences. While Catholics in New York were once a marginalized minority facing anti-immigrant hostility, successive waves of immigration from Ireland, Italy and other nations during the 19th century slowly helped make the city and the nation more religiously tolerant and diverse. Today, the U.S. is experiencing another surge of immigration--this time from across the globe. How does the experience of today s immigrants compare to that of their predecessors? How does the earlier Catholic immigrant experience inform the Church s and our own attitudes toward immigrants and immigration? What can we learn from these comparisons? These questions will guide the program as students explore this amazing city and its great landmarks, history and neighborhoods. Learning Outcomes and Final Project Through customized lectures, site visits and service learning, students will experience not only the famous sights of the city, but they ll also come away with a deeper understanding of how migrants from different nations and eras came to New York to build a new life. A final project will invite student teams to utilize their learning in New York to create short videos documenting the experiences and contributions of the city s different historical and contemporary immigrant groups.
