CLEP Exam Schedule/January June 2019 Chicago Campus 122 S. Michigan Ave., Rm. 6035 Credit for Prior Learning - CREDIT BY EXAMINATION What is Credit by Examination? NLU awards credit by examination for eligible students who have achieved acceptable scores on CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs). You might wish to explore this option of examination as a way to gain additional credits needed for degree completion. Where can I take the exams? Computer-based CLEP and DANTES tests may be taken on NLU s Chicago or Lisle campuses, or at other institutions offering these exams. If these exams are taken at another institution, your score reports should be sent to NLU for awarding of transfer credit. For more information regarding DANTES or CLEP please contact 630-874-4316. Who qualifies to take exams at NLU? Undergraduate students or graduate students seeking undergraduate credit may register. NLU is an open CLEP testing center, while we are a closed DANTES testing center, requiring that students be admitted to the university. What do CLEP exams cover? CLEP tests measure knowledge of academic topics through five subject areas (Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Business). CLEP exams are timed, but there is no penalty for wrong or skipped answers. Credit awards vary from to 14QH (3SH to 9SH). What do DANTES exams cover? DANTES exams measure learning in some business and academic areas, including mathematics, humanities, physical and life sciences, social sciences and technical writing. There is no penalty for incorrect or skipped answers. Credit awards for all DANTES are. Many DANTES can be completed within 90 minutes; however, the maximum time allowed is 2 hours. The NLU test center code for DANTES is #8340. 1
CLEP REGISTRATION PROCEDURES Always check with your academic advisor to avoid course overlap or duplication and to assure exam credits will apply to your program: Call 1-800- 443-5522, x5900 to check with your assigned academic advisor. Start the registration procedure once you have decided on which exam to take, by going to the CLEP website to create an account: http://clep.collegeboard.org/register/exam Once you have created an account and registered for your exam through the CLEP website, and received your ticket, complete the next step in the registration process by registering for your date and time through NLU Prior Learning Assessment s testing schedule registration form. Complete the registration form and email, fax or mail the registration form to the Prior Learning Assessment office. Registration is limited, so please register early. Include both a first and second choice exam date/time. See page 7 for a schedule of exam dates. A confirmation email will be sent to your NLU email address or email address indicated on registration form. The total cost for CLEP exams are $112 including the $87 for the exam and the $25 administrative fee to be charged to your student account following the completion of the exam. Registrations cannot be held without receipt of the NLU registration form. Payment for the exam is paid directly to CLEP when you register for the exam via the CLEP website. CLEP exams will be refundable up to seven days from the date of purchase, with the exception of redeemed exams. CLEP study guides can be found in the following book: The CLEP Official Study Guide. Additional information may be obtained from the College Board website at http://clep.collegeboard.org. Exam handbooks can be purchased via this website for a fee, and/or individual sections/exams can be purchased also. It is also recommended to check your NLU library, public library or bookstores for CLEP study materials. Free Online CLEP Course - Through the Modern States' Freshman Year for Free program, students can sign up for a free online CLEP course. Each course is aligned to a CLEP subject and includes online lectures, quizzes, tests, and other features. Textbooks and materials are also provided online, free of charge. 2
CLEP Online Scores and Transcript Ordering Viewing Scores: To view scores, log in to MY Account with the same account used to register for the exam. Once logged in, click on My CLEP Exam Scores. Scores will be available in MY Account one business day after the exam has been taken. Composition scores will be available online 2-3 weeks after taking the exam. Ordering Additional Transcripts: To order official transcripts, log in to My Account, click on the Request a Transcript link, and then follow the instructions to submit the order. There is a $20 fee for each transcript ordered. All test takers have the option of sending scores for free by selecting a score recipient institution when they register. EXAM DAY PROCEDURES Arrive at the exam site on time. Students arriving late will not be allowed to sit for exams. Testing room/location Chicago campus, 6 th floor, room 6035. Required ID: test takers MUST provide an ID that is a valid government-issued ID, including both a photo and signature. Instructions and testing time take 2 hours. Students may take only one exam per test time offered. No cell phone, pagers, book bags, purses, books, food or drinks etc., are allowed in the exam room. Scores are printed up for the student immediately following the exam, except for exams requiring an essay. Score results for those exams will be sent within a few weeks after completion of the exam. No-pass results: Students must wait 90 days from the original exam date to retake an exam. RESCHEDULING/CANCELLING EXAMS When you miss an exam session, you prevent another student from taking an exam during that session.
