Since participating in the founding of the Pattern and Decoration Movement in the 1970s, Robert Kushner has continued to address controversial issues involving decoration in his work. Kushner draws from an unlikely range of influences, including Islamic patterns, Japanese screens, French Nabis painters, Matisse, O Keefe, and Demuth. His work is museum collections around the world, including the Tate Gallery, London, SF MoMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Met, MoMA and, of course, the Whitney. Saturday, November 12 Wednesday, November 16 Artist Visit with Jonathan Allen at Lu Magnus Location: Lu Magnus Gallery, 55 Hester Street Join artist Jonathan Allen as he discusses his first solo show at Lu Magnus. Allen has exhibited at a number of New York galleries and nonprofit art spaces, including PS122, Socrates Sculpture Park, and Exit Art. In 2008, Allen was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. In 2009-2010, he participated in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace residency. In 2010, Brooklyn Arts Press published SUPERSTRUCTURE, a monograph of Allen s work. In December 2010, Allen s first international solo exhibition opened in Italy. Tuesday, March 27 Navigating an Auction Please join us for a private reception of the next Photography auction by Phillips de Pury & Co. Art advisor Lowell Pettit will walk us through the sale, and highlight the unique challenges and rewards of collecting photographs. Over his career, Pettit has worked for a number of photographers and photography galleries, and briefly served in the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also served on the faculty of the Sotheby's Institute of Art over the last decade. In that time, the auctions have arguably been the most conspicuous sign of global expansion within the art market. While photography has been at the center of that expansion, much of the material remains accessible and affordable. The evening promises to be a fun introduction for those who are new to the history of photography, just as it will be a healthy overview of medium today for those already involved in collecting photographs.
