The History and Status of Levels in Britain ZHU Zhen Shanghai High School Shanghai 200231 Abstract Level examinations are referred to the Advanced General Certificate of Education GCE. In England Wales and Northern Ireland Levels are one of the principal entry examinations for most universities. GCE Level and O - Level examinations were first sat in 1951. O - Levels were replaced by the General Certificate of Secondary Education GCSE in 1988 but Levels were retained. Levels represent the Gold Standard for secondary school educational attainment in Britain. The range of subjects the introduction of modular examination and A* grade and the determinateness of grade boundaries and etc were involved in reforms in Level examinations.
