Important High School Terms Credit A unit showing a student has successfully completed a course Each passing semester of a course earns 0.5 credits GPA Grade Point Average The average grade earned by a student, figured by dividing the grade points earned by the number of credits attempted (see how to calculate on next slide) Higher GPAs equate to more college and scholarship opportunities Class Rank The measure of a student s performance in comparison to other students in the class (grade level)

Grade Points Grading Scale Regular Level Advanced Level (K/AP) A = 90-100 A = 6.0 A = 7.0 B = 80-89 B = 5.0 B = 6.0 C = 75-79 C = 4.0 C = 5.0 D = 70-74 D = 3.0 D = 4.0 F = 0-69 F = 0.0 F = 0.0 HONOR GRADUATES Summa Cum Laude: Magna Cum Laude: Cum Laude: 6.5 GPA or higher 6.25 GPA or higher 6.0 GPA or higher

Grade Averaging Semester averages are figured by adding each 6 weeks grade twice + exam grade counted once, divided by 7. Year averages are an average of the Fall and Spring semester grades. Students MUST pass the Spring semester. A student that passes both semesters will receive full credit. A student can fail the Fall semester and make a high enough average in the Spring semester to average to a passing grade and receive credit for the whole year. A student that passes the Fall semester but fails the Spring semester will only need to make up /repeat the Spring semester. They will receive credit for passing the Fall semester. A student that fails both semesters receives no credit. FALL SPRING SEMESTER CREDIT 75 Pass 75 Pass 75 Pass 1.0 65 Fail 75 Pass 70 Pass 1.0 65 Fail 70 Pass 68 Fail 0.5 must make up Fall 75 Pass 65 Fail 70 Fail 0.5 must make up Spring 65 Fail 65 Fail 65 Fail 0.0

How do I recover a credit? Year Long Courses: Failed 1 st semester, passed second semester First and Second semester must average to a 70 or above Example: 60(fall)+80(spring)=70 (you get 1 credit) Failed 2 nd semester, passed first semester You only earn ½ credit Example: 80 (fall)+60 (spring) = ½ credit You must attend summer school, take Credit by Exam, or retake spring course

How to Calculate GPA Determine each semester letter grade Award grade points Add points Divide by total number of classes, by semester, for ENTIRE schooling Carry out to 4 decimal points Eng I K 91 (A) 7 Alg I 80 (B) 5 W. Geog. 85 (B) 5 Bio 78 (C) 4 PACE 92 (A) 6 PE 99 (A) 6 Span 2 83 (B) 5 Total 38 GPA: 38/7 = 5.4256
