ICSSR Workshop on Research Methodology in Social Sciences (February 4-13, 2019) Captioned: Ten Days Research Methodology Course for M.Phil/Ph.D./Research Scholar in Social Sciences SPONSORED BY Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India ORGANIZED BY Thakur Ratan Pal Singh (TRPS) Vanijya Bhawan, Faculty of Commerce Course Director Dr. R. S. Meena Faculty of Commerce Banaras Hindu University Contact no. +91-9415813184 Programme Chairman Prof. C. P. Mall Head & Dean Faculty of Commerce Banaras Hindu University Varanasi (UP)-221005 VENUE Faculty Auditorium, Thakur Ratan Pal Singh (TRPS) Vanijya Bhawan, Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (UP)-221005

The Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi will organize a ten days Workshop on Research Methodology in Social Sciences for ST and SC Ph.D. Scholars during February 04 (Monday) February 13, 2019 (Wednesday). This workshop shall be designed to impart knowledge on Research Methodology in the context of qualitative and quantitative research along with hands on training in advanced statistical packages (including SPSS/STATA and EVIEWS) across the various fields of Social Sciences. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME Research provides new domain of knowledge, new theories and laws, solution to a problem and open new areas of thought. Further, it has the potential to question and analyse the existing theories in accordance to the present circumstances. Hence, it is important for educational/professional academicians to be acquainted with the process of research i.e. research methodology. It is worth mentioning that research is a systematic process and the knowledge of research methodology helps to understand what to do in specific situation. Therefore, it is very much important for a researcher to know all the aspects and steps of research process in order to make it systematic to a greater degree and hence, to stop the question to the reliability and validity of his/her work. This Training Course on Research Methodology shall make the young researcher familiar with the various aspects, tools and steps of conducting social science research. The participants will be introduced to various methods of doing research i.e, quantitative, qualitative as well as mixed method approach. Special emphasis will be given to qualitative approaches like phenomenology, ethnography, ethno-methodology etc. Research Methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. A researcher must know the rationale for using specific methods or techniques and establish their relevance. Methodology may be understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. Each discipline within the social science is informed by its research paradigms and each paradigm is associated with attendant methodologies. Methodology, thus, refers to the rationale and the philosophical assumptions that underlie any natural, social or human science study (Mc Gregor & Murnane 2010). Research involves answering unanswered questions or exploring something which currently does not exist (Goddard & Melville, 2004). The Advanced Learners Dictionary of current English lays down the meaning of research as a careful investigation or inquiry especially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge. Redmen & Mory (2009) define research as a systematized effort to gain new knowledge. Social Science research assumes significance from the nature of problem being identified and the possible solutions, since it has a larger impact on the day to day activities of the common man. Over the years, it has been found that the quality of research output has been far from the much needed standards. A research work must act as a catalyst for further researches to be undertaken in the said field. In the recent past, many new dimensions of research have emerged catering to the vast changes taking place in the present day social situation. The quality of research depends on the understanding of the research problem, the attendant research methodology and the appropriate tools used for the analysis. The need to impart expertise and skills in Statistics and Applied Econometrics is, thus, imperative. Hence, it is felt that a Ten-Day Course on Research Methodology and Quantitative Techniques be conducted for research scholars + newly inducted pursuing lectures their doctoral studies in the social sciences. This course predominantly follows the Research Methodology Syllabus designed by the ICSSR which includes extensive understanding of both qualitative and quantitative methods. However, it also aims at incorporating certain additional features in order to cater to the growing needs of the young research scholars.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAMME The Course provides an overview of relevant statistical techniques and its application in social science research. The participants will offer hands-on practice in packages such as SPSS and Microsoft Excel. By the end of the Course, participants should be in a position to use various statistical techniques. The Course would train the participants in the following areas: 1. Nature of Scientific Methods and its Application to Social Phenomenon & Nature, Importance and Scope of Research 2. Types of Research: Historical, Analytical, Interdisciplinary, Evaluative, Participative and Action Research 3. Steps in the Process of Research- Problem Selection, Formulation and Planning: How to write a Proposal 4. Types of Research Design: Exploratory, Diagnostic, Descriptive: Experimental; Control Group & Experimental Group; Ex-Post Fact to Research Design 5. Concepts in Quantitative Research: Variables, Attributes 6. Hypotheses: Concept & Types of Hypotheses, Formulation of Hypothesis, Testing of Hypothesis 7. Nature & Types of Sampling: Probability Sampling: Simple Random Sampling, Proportionate and Disproportionate Stratified Random Sampling, Cluster Sampling- Non-Probability Sampling: Accidental Sampling, Quota Sampling, Purposive Sampling, Snowball Sampling 8.
