Issue 23 December 9th, 2016 Year 12 Graduation Dinner Congratulations to all the Year 12s on their graduation. A lovely dinner was held at the St. Arnaud Sporting Club on Wednesday night. It was great to see all of the parents, extended family members and friends who have supported the Year 12s throughout their schooling and especially this year. A big thank you to Mrs Terri Dean for the organisation of the night and to all other staff and students who assisted. It was very enjoyable. Presentation Night A reminder to keep Tuesday 13t h of December at 7.30pm free. All students are expected to attend the night in full school uniform including black shoes (those without black shoes will not be allowed on stage). During the day on Tuesday 13 th students are allowed to wear casual clothes so that uniform can be organised and cleaned. There will be a rehearsal on that Tuesday at 12pm and it is expected that all students attend. The Year 10 to 12 students should meet at the Town Hall at 11.50am and the rehearsal should last approximately one hour. After that the Year 10 12 students are free to go. Year 7-9 students will be walked down to the Town Hall after recess and after the rehearsal they will go to the pool for the rest of the day and be dismissed from there. Students will need to bring lunch from home. They can only be dismissed from the Town Hall once rehearsal is finished if they have a note from a parent permitting them to go home. This note is given to Mrs. Young in the morning. Support Interview Days Students will not be required at school on Monday 19 th and Tuesday 20 th December unless parents have been notified that they need to attend student support interviews with their child. No buses will be running on those days. During the prelude to Christmas, I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy and hearty Christmas and hope that 2017 is a productive year for your families. I hope the holidays are fun-filled and rewarding, but just as the sun always rises, so school will be on again in 2017. The Year 12s and Year 7s start school on Tuesday 31st January, and all students will be expected at school on Wednesday, 1st February, 2017. Page 3 The RACV Energy Breakthrough took place from November 17 th to 20 th and once again the students of St. Arnaud Secondary College were keen to be a part of it with three teams entered into the 24 hour Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) event. The Energy Breakthrough is the culmination of a year of work which sees students design and then manufacture and/or modify a HPV which is then raced for 24 hours against 130 other vehicles around a 1.84km street circuit in Maryborough. Prior to racing students need to give a community presentation and then undergo the rigorous scrutineering process when the vehicle is checked to ensure it meets the very stringent safety regulations. During the race vehicles are quite often involved in heavy collisions (quite often rolling them right over). They need to be designed to protect the rider from any injuries and are designed to a standard where theoretically a rider could be strapped in, the vehicle inverted and then dropped from the first story of a building with the rider sustaining no serious injuries. A quick summary of our three team s efforts are below; Pink Ladies (Number 69). Our first ever all female team, consisting of: Ellen Prestwood, Jenna Meagher, Imogen Amos, Madison Bibby, Madison Decker, Maddison Hendy, Bianca Hendry, Sarah Russ, Courtney Bell, Cody Decker, Della Harris. The Pink Ladies ended up with a couple of vehicle issues involving steering alignment and rear brake failure which saw them off the track for around 1.5 hours. They came 10 th (from 13) in their category and completed 249 laps, a total of 458.16km. Big Where It Counts (Number 369). Our all male team competing in the Open Category. Team members were: Matthew Arbuckle, Tyler Baldock, William Bertalli, Aiden Burke, Dylan Casey, Mitchell Egan, Nick Myers, Jesse Reyne, Cooper Baldock, Rodney Braithwaite. Big Where It Counts (named after the large 80 tooth front chain ring on the vehicle) were very competitive throughout the competition. The vehicle ended up in some heavy crashes, and sustained some major damage to the protective canopy which involved the 16mm aluminium frame snapping in places. They finished 17 th in their category (from 31) completing 381 laps, or 701.04km. Finding Branko (Number 70). Our mixed team in the B2 Category. Team members were: Brooke Clohesy, Johanna Meagher, Maggie Gorrie, Lucy Gorrie, Lochlan Flanagan, Sam Lloyd, Cody Stevenson, Tom Flanagan, Charlie Ferguson. Finding Branko seemed to complete the 24 hours without too many mechanical mishaps. Finishing 20 th in their category (from 27) they did 276 laps, a total of 507.84km. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their assistance in getting the teams on the track, and also the St. Arnaud community for their technical assistance and support and all the visitors that came down to visit over the weekend. Mr. Reynolds
