Conclusion VET, especially DUAL vocational training: an increasingly important issue for the EU and worldwide a success factor for competitiveness crucial for the economic and social development

The apprenticeship system comparison of countries Differences between Austria and Germany (Switzerland, Liechtenstein) Number of apprenticeship occupations AT: around 200 CH: around 250 DE: around 330 LI: around 110 Apprenticeship starting age AT: 16,6 years (with an upward trend) DE: 19,7 years in AT, only 2% start an apprenticeship after finishing upper secondary shool (after "Matura"), in DE 24% of upper secondary school leavers decide to become an apprentice (after "Abitur") Percentage of an age cohort AT: 38% after compulsory education DE: 56% ("training beginner rate" = "Ausbildungsanfängerquote"); 25% of apprentices have general qualification for university entrance ("Abitur") CH: 67% (2/3 of an age cohorte) LI: 60%

The importance of digitization Digitization of the apprenticeship system Adaptation to the requirements of the digitization Modernization of 8 job profiles in 2017, e.g. retail trade: digital sellings as another special focus Vulcanisation: diagnostics computer 54 occupations supposed to be adjusted till 2020, e.g. e-commerce retail trade (as a new occupation chemical processes engineering ("Chemieverfahrenstechnik") vehicle body construction ("Karosseriebautechnik" ) installations and building technology ("Installations- und Gebäudetechnik") information technology Digitization will have strong impacts on crafts and trades, e.g. heating and air-conditioning: smart technology hearing aid audiology: parts of instruments printed with 3D printer Shoemaking: printing of lasts with 3D printer

Main VET programmes in AUSTRIA (1) Dual Apprenticeship training (around 38% of 16+ year-olds) Training enterprise (80%) and part-time vocational school (20% of time) Demand-led system: apprenticeship contract between enterprise and apprentice Training is based on two regulations (ordinances): training company and school Approx. 200 apprenticeships ( professions ) in practically all branches of the economy with a 2-4 years training period depending on the profession Basis for Higher VET : Meister and other professional qualifications Demand driven, market logic Full time school based VET (around 40% of 16+ year-olds) VET Schools and VET Colleges Entirely school based but some programs provide for mandatory internships Combination of general and vocational education Different types and duration (technical, commercial, agricultural, tourism, social, humanities, health) Double qualification in VET-colleges: VET-diploma and university access Supply driven, entitlement logic

EuroSkills Competition Biannual competition for young professionals up to 25 years 35 typical European professions in the fields of engineering, manufacturing and service industries ( official skills ) In addition: presentation skills determined by the organizer Takes place since 2008 every two years Rotterdam 2008, Lisbon 2010, Spa 2012, Lille 2014, Gothenburg 2016 Next competitions: Budapest 2018, Graz 2020 In the past European Championship 2016 Austria achieved: 14 medals (5 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze) 9 diplomas "Medallion for Excellence" For the 3 rd time best European nation in a row in the overall appraisal
