AP Calculus AB Mrs. Hunt Welcome to AP Calculus! This course teaches students to interpret data, graphs, and tables graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally while grasping connections between them. You will communicate mathematical reasoning in all ways possible using graphing calculators. The following guidelines will acquaint you with the routine of the class and my expectations of the students. Materials Calculus Book Writing Utensils Math Notebook (3-ring) with subject dividers Graphing Calculator (TI-89 s will be checked out on a contract basis) Procedures 1. You are expected to attend class each day bringing all of the materials listed above. Attendance is crucial to success in any high-level math class. Because of the rigor of this course, attendance is extremely important. AP Attendance Policy: A Student enrolled in an AP class needs to have 90% attendance during the 1 st semester in order to have a test ordered. This equates to 10 class periods missed of an AP class during the 1 st semester, excused or unexcused. Students will be able to present hardship cases, and administration will communicate with the AP teacher in these circumstances. *Progress Monitoring happens during 1 st semester. If a student is out of compliance at semester and a hardship case is not presented, no exam will be ordered by AP Coordinator. Student will have option to stay in class to receive credit for AP course upon meeting requirements, or change out of AP course. 2. Students are expected to be in their seat ready to begin when the bell rings. Tardies come off of employability grade. 3. Homework will be assigned daily. The next day's homework will be checked for completion or a quiz will be given over the material, so it is very important to stay caught up on your assignments. It is the responsibility of the student to utilize the solutions manual to his/her benefit of understanding. 4. Employability skills grades will count for 20% of the quarter grade. The employability skills grade consists of unexcused absences, tardiness, being prepared for class, and cooperative participation in class. 5. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in a zero for the assignment,

test, or quiz, no exceptions. 6. After school and before school help is available upon request by the student. Please let me know when you plan to come in so that I can be available. 7. All students in the class are required to take the AP exam in May. Any student who does not take the exam will not receive AP credit. Grading Procedures 20 % Employability Skills 20% Quizzes/Homework/Classwork 60% Unit Tests 25% Midterm/Final Exam: The above items constitute 75% of your grade. Each semester you will take a practice exam that follows the format of the AP that will count for your midterm or final exam grade. Make-up Work 1. If a student is absent, they are responsible for the work missed. They need to get the assignment and have completed by the next school day. Assignments that require a handout will be given 1 school day to complete. 2. If a student misses a test or quiz, he or she may make it up before or after school. An exact day will need to be arranged by the student with the teacher. All make-up quizzes and tests will be oral with a complete description of the material to the teacher. The student has until the end of that 9-weeks grading period to make-up any quiz or test, however I suggest a day or two. If the student fails to make up the test or quiz he or she will receive a zero. Course Outline Textbook: Calculus, Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic - Finney, Demana, Waits, Kennedy Homework: Students will be asked to verbally explain homework questions in class and in small groups. Students will be asked to demonstrate calculator skills while presenting answers. The assignments will consist of short practice problems and develop into extensive word problems that will prepare students for the extended response questions of the AP test. Quizzes: Periodically- about every other class meeting Tests: After every Chapter with the exception of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, which are broken

into sections. Worksheets: Where you see (Worksheet) after a lesson is where you will turn in a worksheet with your already assigned homework. TESTS: The chapter tests are used to simulate an AP exam. This means you will have a number of multiple-choice questions with the calculator and without the calculator that deal with various functions and graphs. Also, you will have free response questions in which you will need to explain reasoning graphically, analytically, and with correct Calculus symbols and named units of measure. After each test is graded and given back, students may be assigned questions from the test to present to the class verbally. This will be a participation grade. First Semester: 1. Turn in, grade, and go over Summer packet 2. Review Pre-Calculus concepts, Trigonometry, and Functions 3. Chapter 1: Prerequisites for Calculus a. Linear Functions b.
