Ohi Alternative Resident Educatr License Alternative Resident Educatr Institute (AREI) Syllabus Ohi s Alternative Resident Educatr License The State Bard f Educatin has adpted rules establishing the standards and requirements fr btaining an Alternative Resident Educatr License fr teaching in grades kindergarten t twelve in a designated subject area, and in the area f interventin specialist in grades kindergarten t twelve, and fr wrld languages in grades prekindergarten t twelve, and fr career-technical wrkfrce develpment areas. Applicants fr the fur-year Alternative Resident Educatr License fr designated subjects in grades K-12, interventin specialist grades K-12 and wrld languages grades P-12 must satisfy the fllwing cnditins prir t issuance f the license: Hld a bachelr s degree with a GP f 2.5 r higher frm an accredited institutin f higher educatin, r extensive wrk experience related t the area t be taught as determined by the Ohi Credential Review Bard; Pass an examinatin in the subject area fr which applicatin is being made; Pass the Ohi Assessment fr Educatrs (OAE) 090 Fundatins f Reading exam (fr candidates seeking Interventin Specialist r Integrated Language Arts licensure); and Successfully cmplete the Alternative Resident Educatr Institute (AREI). An Alternative Resident Educatr License is valid fr fur years and may be extended n a case-by-case basis. In rder t advance t a five-year prfessinal educatr license, the alternative resident educatr must meet the fllwing requirements: 1 Successful cmpletin f fur years f teaching under the Alternative Resident Educatr License; Successful cmpletin f the fur-year Resident Educatr Prgram; Successful cmpletin f 12 semester (18 quarter) hurs f prfessinal educatin cursewrk, frm a cllege r university apprved t prepare teachers, in the principles and practices f teaching, student develpment and learning, pupil assessment prcedures, curriculum develpment, classrm management and teaching methdlgy, OR cmpletin f a Prfessinal Develpment Institute apprved by the Ohi Department f Higher Educatin AND A three semester hur curse in the teaching f reading in the cntent area fr all subject areas except integrated language arts and interventin specialist licensure areas, which require successful cmpletin f at least six semester hurs in the teaching f reading (including at least ne separate three semester hur teaching f phnics curse) Successful cmpletin f the state bard f educatin examinatin required fr

teacher licensure that measures prfessinal knwledge. Please nte: An educatr with an alternative resident educatr license must take this exam during the secnd year f teaching under the license; Alternative Resident Educatr Institute (AREI) State legislatin als set requirements fr the Alternative Resident Educatr Institute (AREI) t prvide instructin in the principles and practices f teaching fr individuals seeking an Alternative Resident Educatr License cvering such tpics as student develpment and learning, pupil assessment prcedures, curriculum develpment, classrm management, and teaching methdlgy. The Alternative Resident Educatr Institute (AREI) delivers these cntent requirements and aligns with the Ohi Standards fr the Teaching Prfessin. The AREI is a series f three pedaggical cntent mdules with 15 assignments and a field experience requirement: Mdule 1: Teaching as a Prfessin Mdule 2: Student Develpment and Learning Mdule 3: Essentials f Teaching Practice Three (3) pre-recrded nline caching sessins are available. Additinally, an instructinal cach ffers up t ten (10) 15 minute nline live sessins t respnd t a participant s questins regarding cntent and assignments. AREI Infrmatin Cntent Delivery A prvider apprved by the Ohi Department f Educatin delivers the AREI. Mdules are lcated nline, and the infrmatin, activities and assessments are cnsistent regardless f the frmat r prvider. The AREI uses an asynchrnus mdel, which means the participant des nt need t be nline at the same time as ther participants r the instructr. The participant submits the assignments at his/her wn pace. Cmmunicatin with the instructr and technical supprt is thrugh email and an nline messaging system. The instructr prvides assignment feedback as necessary fr the student t achieve mastery f the assignment cntent (mastery is set at 80%). Caching The AREI prvides participants three (3) pre-recrded nline caching sessins are available. Additinally, an instructinal cach ffers up t ten (10) 15 minute nline live sessins, either ne-n-ne r in small grups, t respnd t a participant s questins regarding cntent and assignments. Participant Respnsibilities An AREI participant uses the same skills expected in a cllege curse. It is the respnsibility f the participant t read all f the cntent infrmatin, cmplete all f the activities and assignments, and recrd (thrugh nte taking r creatin f electrnic files) AREI infrmatin necessary fr assignments and future 2

reference. Since the AREI ffers an n-line self-paced frmat, the participant needs t assign adequate time fr cmpletin f the mdules. Cmputer Access/Skills Mst supplemental infrmatin required t cmplete activities and assignments is nly available n-line. Participants need t have reliable access t an internet cnnectin as well as the fllwing cmputer skills: The ability t dwnlad, uplad and attach files; The ability t create Wrd dcuments and tables; The ability t create cmputer flders and files; and The ability t create and receive email. Field-Based Experience Several f the AREI activities and 15 assignments require participants t bserve in an apprved field-based setting and must include interactin with P-12 aged children, wh are age- apprpriate fr the licensure sught, and must include bservatin, active participatin, and leading instructin (please nte that athletic caching is nt applicable). A participant needs scheduling flexibility t participate in an apprved field-based experience fr at least 25 hurs during the curse f the AREI. Backgrund Check Because field-based experience invlves interactin with minr students, participants must take and pass bth a BCI and FBI backgrund check. All backgrund check reprts must be submitted via electrnic submissin directly frm the Ohi Bureau f Criminal Investigatin. The checks n file at the Ohi Department f Educatin must be less than 365 days ld upn registering fr the AREI and when applying fr the Alternative Resident Educatr License. ARE participants will need t check with their field experience site regarding BCI and FBI backgrund check requirements. It is recmmended that AREI participants check with the lcal schl district, neighbring schl district r the regin s Educatinal Service Center, fr availability f Web Check. If nne f these ptins are available, pssible sites are listed n the Attrney General s Web site. Educatrs shuld ask whatever agency they use fr the backgrund checks if they have bth the Ohi and Natinal Web Check machines. Please be sure t tell the agency t cmplete the sectin n the frm that asks where yu want the results sent by checking Teacher Certificatin. Availability f Materials AERI mdules and infrmatin will be available fr 16 weeks frm the date f acceptance int the AREI. Time fr cmpletin may nt be extended. Participants are respnsible fr maintaining their wn dcuments and infrmatin frm the AREI as instructed. AREI Descriptin Mdule Outcmes 3

As each mdule is cmpleted, an AREI participant creates a cllectin f career reference dcuments as well as cmpiles a prtfli f assignments fr use as a summative assessment. Each mdule has a set f utcmes: Teaching as a Prfessin Recgnize the specific requirements and individual respnsibilities fr teaching in Ohi. Examine the varius teaching pprtunities within the area f licensure sught. Review Ohi s fur-tier licensure structure and the requirements fr each level. Review the Resident Educatr Prgram. Obtain knwledge f the varius standards that frame the teaching prfessin. Learn the Ohi Standards fr Educatrs. Obtain baseline knwledge f the legal and ethical issues impacting Ohi s teachers. Review basic schl and district schedules. Examine the rles and respnsibilities f varius schl staff members. Recgnize varius types f cllabratin, cnsultatin, and cmmunicatin within a schl setting. Student Develpment and Learning Obtain knwledge f basic learning theries and the develpment f cgnitive abilities in learners. Examine the physical, emtinal, and scial develpment f learners, including adlescents. Recgnize diversity in learners, including race, ethnicity, sciecnmics and language. Examine varius disability categries under IDEIA. Essentials f Teaching Practice Understand and develp curriculum Learn abut planning and delivering lessns. Develp individual and unit lessns. Obtain knwledge f hw t manage classrms f diverse students. 4 Prtfli Cmpnents A prtfli f assignments builds thrughut the AREI. (9) IEP Accmmdatin Analysis (10) Individual Lessn Plan (11) Detailed Lessn Plan with Differentiatin (12) Lessn Assessment Cllectin (13) 10-Lessn Unit Plan (14) Classrm Management Plan (15) Final Reflectin AREI Assessment Individual Assignments Each assignment pairs with a rubric that identifies the assignment cmpnents and a range f perfrmance fr each cmpnent. Participants must scre a minimum f 80% Prficient n each individual assignment in rder t successfully cmplete the AREI. If an assignment des nt initially meet the 80% Prficient criteria, participants may revise and resubmit. Writing Requirements All written assignments must be cmpleted as fllws: 12-pint fnt (Times New Rman, Arial, Calibri r ther standard fnt) Duble-spaced One-inch margins Mdule Cmpletin Successful cmpletin f the AREI requires the fllwing: AREI mdules are self-paced. A participant is permitted 16 weeks frm the date f acceptance int the AREI t successfully cmplete all activities and 15 assignments this time perid may nt be extended; All prtfli assignments scred at a minimum 80% Prficient (Prficient rating in all rubric criteria); A final summative assessment f the prtfli is scred at a minimum 80% (Prficient rating in all rubric criteria); Field experience; and A Certificate f Cmpletin is issued upn meeting the abve requirements and cmpleting the AREI feedback survey. 5
