We really appreciated the children being here in uniform and proudly showing off their school and the staff for making everyone feel so welcome. The music room was certainly a huge hit with everyone. How wonderful to see the children singing and playing the instrumentsa big thank you to Clare and Danny for all their efforts in setting everything up and encouraging all the participation. Thank you to Brett, Steph and Chris for sharing their cooking skills with us; they did a great job. Many thanks go to Jake McStay from Island Primary Produce, Ventnor for the donation of the Sausages and to Mitre 10 for their donation of the BBQ also to Coles for the donation of the bread. Through the generosity of the above businesses we were able to raise over $200 for the Fraser family. Thank you everyone! Next week is National Science week and as we have science as a high priority at OLSS we are delighted that Dr Rebecca McIntosh (Research scientist) is able to visit us on Monday 13 August. She will be addressing the students from 9:15AM until 10:00AM. Rebecca has worked on the ecology and demography of marine predators for 14 years, with a focus on Australian seals. Her areas of interest extend into marine protected species management, conservation and avian biology. Rebecca s research experience includes field work on Macquarie Island, the Galapagos Islands and the islands of southern Australia. Currently, she is working on several projects relating to the Australian fur seal and the little penguin. An extension of her research will explore ecosystem trophodynamics and food webs in Bass Strait. Rebecca has an honorary appointment at the Zoology Department, La Trobe University, Melbourne. This will be a wonderful start to the week and we will conclude the week with a family tree planting session on Friday afternoon 17th August from 2:30PM we hope you can join us. 13th - 17th Aug - NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK 17th/24th Aug - AFL CLINIC 15th Aug - WHOLE SCHOOL MASS 9:30AM 16th Aug - 1st ANNUAL BOOK FAIR 17th Aug - TREE PLANTING SESSION 2:30PM 20th - 24th Aug BOOK WEEK 21st Aug - MAYOR ROTHFIELD VISITING 4/5 CLASS @ 2:00PM 21st/28th Aug - BASKETBALL CLINIC 22nd Aug - SCHOOL PHOTOS - WINTER UNIFORM REQUIRED MORE INFO TO COME 23rd Aug - BOOK WEEK DRESS UP DAY 5th Sept - LEGO Incursion Our Lady Star of the Sea Be safe Be respectful Be responsible Be resilient Be ready

She was born on 15th January 1842 and died on the 8th August 1909. Pope John Paul proclaimed her a saint on the 19th January 1995, she became Blessed Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary had always wanted to join the religious life and with the help of Fr Julian Tenison Woods Mary started the first Catholic school for poor children of the outback in Penola South Australia. They had seen the pressing need to provide education to the children of Catholic families and offered schooling to the families whether they had the capacity to pay or not. Mary founded the religious order sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and many of the schools in our diocese were started by the sisters. As well as establishing schools they also set up many welfare agencies throughout Australia and New Zealand. Our school motto is Courage, Compassion and Creativity, these three values were certainly lived by Mary MacKillop and we aspire to be able to also follow her example as we live our lives. We Christians have Jesus as our model of courage, as Mary MacKillop did. Jesus had the courage to be himself and to trust God in every circumstance of his life, even when he was rejected by the religious leaders who claimed to have the greater understanding of God. He stepped outside the bounds of his society s expectation and went to help lepers, demonpossessed people, the lame and the blind. He called a tax collector to be an Apostle, he freely associated with women some of whom were prostitutes and social outcasts. Jesus had the courage to suffer for God s values, the courage to die for God s will, the courage to trust God to raise him from the dead. As Christians, we are called to give courageous witness to Christian values in the way we live our personal lives, how we interact with other people, how we can move out of the comfortable and familiar and do some Jesus things in our own community.. Never see a need without doing something about it Keep up your courage, we do not live here forever. (27.1.1877) God give me strength for what is necessary. (11.6.1877) Gratitude is the memory of the heart. (1907) Courage, courage, trust in God who helps you in all things. (10.3.1874) Take fresh courage. Lean more on God and less on ourselves. (21.5.1877) We must teach more by example than by word. (2.6.1867) Charity of heart thinks no ill of anyone, is ever on the alert to prevent unkind thoughts, loves to make others happy, and will not be stayed from uttering a kind word, or performing a kind act. (1870) Keep smiling Cathy Like us on Facebook OLSS Motto: Courage, compassion & creativity.
