She was born on 15th January 1842 and died on the 8th August 1909. Pope John Paul proclaimed her a saint on the 19th January 1995, she became Blessed Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary had always wanted to join the religious life and with the help of Fr Julian Tenison Woods Mary started the first Catholic school for poor children of the outback in Penola South Australia. They had seen the pressing need to provide education to the children of Catholic families and offered schooling to the families whether they had the capacity to pay or not. Mary founded the religious order sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and many of the schools in our diocese were started by the sisters. As well as establishing schools they also set up many welfare agencies throughout Australia and New Zealand. Our school motto is Courage, Compassion and Creativity, these three values were certainly lived by Mary MacKillop and we aspire to be able to also follow her example as we live our lives. We Christians have Jesus as our model of courage, as Mary MacKillop did. Jesus had the courage to be himself and to trust God in every circumstance of his life, even when he was rejected by the religious leaders who claimed to have the greater understanding of God. He stepped outside the bounds of his society s expectation and went to help lepers, demonpossessed people, the lame and the blind. He called a tax collector to be an Apostle, he freely associated with women some of whom were prostitutes and social outcasts. Jesus had the courage to suffer for God s values, the courage to die for God s will, the courage to trust God to raise him from the dead. As Christians, we are called to give courageous witness to Christian values in the way we live our personal lives, how we interact with other people, how we can move out of the comfortable and familiar and do some Jesus things in our own community.. Never see a need without doing something about it Keep up your courage, we do not live here forever. (27.1.1877) God give me strength for what is necessary. (11.6.1877) Gratitude is the memory of the heart. (1907) Courage, courage, trust in God who helps you in all things. (10.3.1874) Take fresh courage. Lean more on God and less on ourselves. (21.5.1877) We must teach more by example than by word. (2.6.1867) Charity of heart thinks no ill of anyone, is ever on the alert to prevent unkind thoughts, loves to make others happy, and will not be stayed from uttering a kind word, or performing a kind act. (1870) Keep smiling Cathy Like us on Facebook OLSS Motto: Courage, compassion & creativity.
