(2011,2008) Business English 10e., South-Western Cengage Learning. Course Delivery This course will be conducted 100% online. This is a 16-week course Course Objectives: To understand and apply grammar and language skills for effective communication in the workplace. Important Information 1. If you are not keeping up in the class, drop yourself. Very important DO NOT rely on me to drop you. 2. Trying to negotiate a higher grade in the class reflects irresponsible, inappropriate and overall poor leadership skills. Do not try to negotiate turning in assignments late, completion of extra credit assignments, taking an incomplete to make up for missing work. Do not request that I make special considerations for you a waste of both of our time. If you are unable to keep up with the pace of the course and the coursework required, drop the class before the deadline. Your grade will be determined by your careful attention to deadlines in addition to the quality of your work! Email 1. Email me inside the online classroom (do not leave me a voicemail message or use my OCC e-mail address if you want a prompt response - I do not check either regularly!) 2. E-mails need to be polite and respectful. I do NOT respond to e-mails I perceive as rude, irreverent, or grammatically incorrect (this includes poor organization of thought, spelling errors, typos, and more.) 3. Do NOT e-mail me questions that are in the syllabus and/or have already been addressed in an announcement I have posted, questions that you can answer yourself, questions about technical issues with Blackboard or logging on (you need to direct these types of questions toward online technical services), or anything else that is outside of the scope of this course. If you do not receive a response from me within 48 hours, that means your question falls into one of the aforementioned categories. 1 P a g e
Grading 1. Written work must be college level. Assignments submitted containing numerous mechanical errors will receive reduced credit. Please proofread all work! 2. Your final grade will be based on the cumulative scores of the students in class. Ninety percent (90%) and above of the highest score will equal an A, eighty percent (80%) of the highest score will equal a B, and so forth. If the highest score earned by a student is far above any other scores earned, then the two highest scores will be averaged together and ninety percent (90%) of that average will be an A and so forth. Submitting Assignments Because this is an online course, the only way I know that assignments have been submitted prior to the deadline is via Blackboard, which time stamps all assignments submitted. If, on my end, Blackboard indicates that your assignment was submitted after the due date, but you believe you have submitted it prior to the due date, there is nothing that I can do to assist you. More than likely, it is an issue on your end. Please consult online technical services for assistant on these types of issues, not me! Files must be submitted as Word documents in order to receive credit. I do not accept any other file format. Technical Difficulties Students should visit OCC technical support if you are experiencing any online issues with Blackboard Vista. Technical issues is not a valid excuse for submitting late work. To avoid losing credit for an assignment, turn in work with enough lead time should technical issues arise. Remember, this class is designed to simulate the business world. A deadline is a deadline. http://www.orangecoastcollege.edu/academics/online_classes/online+tech+supp ort+occ+based.htm Dishonesty OCC Academic Honesty Policy will be strongly enforced. Plagiarism, cheating, and any other form of academic dishonesty are not tolerated and may result in a failed grade, suspension, or expulsion. For details, please see the OCC Handbook. Syllabus Disclaimer The syllabus is a general guideline for the course and is subject to change at my discretion. 2 P a g e
Calendar of Activities Assignments, Discussions and quizzes are due 11:59 p.m. the following Sunday. They are available two weeks before the due date (with the exception of the final exam.) No late work accepted! This includes technological issues so don t wait until the last minute to complete work. For example, if Blackboard is down for several hours on the night an assignment is due and you cannot submit your work because the deadline has passed by the time Blackboard is up and running again, your assignment will not be accepted! For this reason, I highly recommend completing and submitting all work at least one night before it is due to make sure you do not run into this situation (which has happened!) I allow two weeks for assignments to be completed so this should not be an issue. No exceptions!! 3 P a g e
