-SQA-SCOTTISH QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY Hanover House 24 Douglas Street GLASGOW G2 7NQ NATIONAL CERTIFICATE MODULE DESCRIPTOR -Module Number- 0088246 -Session-1988-89 -Superclass- QG -Title- PREPARATION FOR BURL PROCEDURES (x 1 / 2 ) -DESCRIPTION- Purpose The purpose of this module is to enable the student to acquire the practical and social skills associated with the procedures carried out on the day of interment. This module is designed to be included as part of an integrated programme of modules for employees in cemeteries. The module should be run in conjunction with 88245 Excavation, Support and Backfill of Graves. Preferred Entry Level 78025 Use of Handtools in Horticulture 62352 Health and Safety in the Work Environment 88245 Excavation, Support and Backfill of Graves Learning Outcomes 1. demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities to the public throughout the burial service; 2. carry out the preparation of the grave area prior to the burial service; 3. apply the correct procedure to be followed during and after the interment. Content/ Context Safety regulations, safe working practices and procedures and legal requirements should be observed at all times. The content of this module should comply with current Code of Practice as stipulated by the Institute of Burial and Cremation Administration for Scotland relating to cemeteries and burial grounds.

Corresponding to the Learning Outcomes 1-3: 1. Knowledge of the Codes of Practice, Health and Safety Policies, relating to cemeteries and of Burial Authorities Management Rules* with regard to Mourners, General Public and Transport. 2. Supervised practical experience in the use of grave boards, grave lining, checking of grave shoring and tidying of surrounding area. 3. Correct use of putlogs, webbing, assistance in lowering coffin into grave and arrangement of floral tributes in accordance with religious/non-religious requirements. *Local rules for the control of members of staff and public within cemeteries. Suggested Learning and Teaching Approaches The learning and teaching approaches should be based on practical activities with a minimum of classroom work. Initial instruction and demonstration of the use of equipment should be given with as low a staff student ratio as possible, ratios may be increased as students gain in confidence. Codes of Practice, Health and Safety Policies, and Management Rules should be distributed to students who, once they have had time to study them, should be encouraged to discuss these with an instructor. Continuous observation is necessary to ensure students understanding and appreciation of the Codes of Practice etc. Students should be instructed that the adjacent roads, footpaths, headstones and grass surrounds should be clean and tidy before, during and immediately after the funeral. A low key observation and understanding of various religious and non-religious funeral procedures by students should be encouraged. -2 -

Assessment Procedures Acceptable performance in the module will be satisfactory achievement of the performance criteria specified for each Learning Outcome. The following abbreviations are used below: LO Learning Outcome Instrument of Assessment Performance Criteria LO1 DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE PUBLIC THROUGHOUT THE BURL SERVICE state the correct behaviour to be displayed throughout a burial service; demonstrate appropriate behaviour during a burial service. (i)short answer Questions/ (2) Practical Exercise (i)short Answer Questions The student will be presented with 7 short answer questions which tests knowledge of the responsibilities of the grave digger throughout the burial service. The questions should be allocated as follows: (I) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) awareness of requirements prior to arrival to cortege - 1 question clothing - 1 question noise level - 2 questions personal behaviour - 1 question local practices at committal - 1 question procedures after service - 1 question The student will be required to give responses to the questions in accordance with the Codes of Practice and Management Rules. based on the student producing 7 correct responses. (2) Practical Exercise The student will be presented with a task which tests the ability to demonstrate appropriate behaviour during a burial service. The student will be observed throughout the burial service for evidence of the demonstration of sensitivity towards mourners and observation of safe practices. -3 -

The exercise should be carried out using a suitably constructed observation checklist. The student will be required to complete the task on three separate occasions. based on the student demonstrating the appropriate behaviour throughout the service on each of the 3 occasions. LO2 CARRY OUT THE PREPARATION OF THE GRAVE AREA PRIOR TO THE BURL (c) (d) (e) check grave and shoring making any adjustments necessary; position grave walk boards in accordance with Codes of Practice; dress grave and surrounding area with artificial grass matting; tidy surrounding area; work safely throughout task. Practical Exercise The student, as part of a team, will be set an exercise which tests the ability to prepare a grave prior to the burial service. The team should consist of a minimum of two persons. All safety procedures must be observed throughout the exercise. The student will be required to complete the task on three separate occasions. The exercise should be carried out using a suitably constructed observation checklist. based on successful completion of all the performance criteria. LO3 APPLY THE CORRECT PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED DURING AND AFTER THE INTERMENT (c) (d) (e) (f) place putlogs over grave to provide temporary resting place for coffin; position lowering webbing accurately; discretely check nameplate against grave opening order; correctly remove putlogs at committal; assist in lowering coffin; work safely throughout task. -4 -

Practical Exercise The student will be presented with an exercise which tests the ability to apply the correct procedures to be followed during and after the burial. The team should consist of a minimum of two persons. All safety procedures must be observed throughout the exercise. The task should be carried out using a suitable constructed observation checklist. The student will be required to complete the task on three separate occasions Satisfactory achievement of the learning outcome will be based on successful completion of all the performance criteria.
