Boght Hills Colt News April, 2017 From the Desk of the Principal Dear Families: March has certainly been another busy month with many exciting activities as well as huge fluctuations in the weather. Layered clothing seems to be the wisest wardrobe choice. Please send your children with gear to go out for recess each day. Our word-of-the-month for April is perseverance. We had a wonderful School Success assembly for students in grades 3-6. Joe Ohdiambo, former Phoenix Suns all-star, came to perform his basketball tricks. The timing for his inspirational talk was perfect. Not only was it a great stress reliever before the ELA assessments, but he spoke about never giving up and always doing your best. Mrs. Comproski, Mrs. VanSleet, our PE staff, and the K-Kids will be sponsoring their annual hoop-a-thon on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00. Students will be having fun while raising money for the Make a Wish foundation. Wednesday, April 12th at 6:30 in the cafeteria, is the second annual International Food Festival. Everyone is welcome to bring a traditional family food to share. Please contact Ms. Kalas (vedranakalas@ncolonie.org) by Tuesday, April 4, so that we can accommodate everyone. For families celebrating Passover or Easter, we wish you a blessed holiday season. For those traveling and/or spending time with family and friends, we wish you a safe and fun-filled number of days. Please note that school will be closed beginning on April 14 for Good Friday and will remain closed April 17-21 for spring recess. Planning for June Jamboree is well underway. If you would like to assist in the many volunteer opportunities, please contact Mrs. Baxt at 518-281-5416 or lbaxt@howardgroup.com. Many hands make light work and lots of fun for kids! Please note the date is Thursday, June 15. A wonderful North Colonie tradition is to honor employees with 20, 25, 30 or more years of service in the district. Congratulations and thank you to Priscilla Griffin for her years of dedication to our students and their families. Hopefully, you ve had a chance to attend some of the district budget meetings, either in person, or through the use of Livestream from the comfort of your home. The process the Board of Education and administration participate in is phenomenal and quite a juggling act. Our district has remained fiscally sound because of the efforts to curb spending while preserving programs for students. These are challenging times as there are many new expectations for our students and staff, with no new funding sources to support them. Please stay informed about the budget decisions our Board has to make so that you can make an informed decision during the budget vote on May 16th from 6 am to 9 pm at Central Office. Also, on the ballot will be the bond referendum and a BOE candidate. It is essential that you cast your vote for the future of our students. Thank you for your continued support with creating a wonderful learning environment for our students. Join us for the budget presentation during the April 27th PTA meeting. We also wish to thank Mrs. Kiran and Mrs. Cannistraci and her many volunteers for a very successful Quiz Night. Kudos to special guest, Mr. McNamara, who did a wonderful job as emcee. Fifteen teams showed us their abundant and wide range of knowledge. Sincerely, Mrs. Greiner

Box Top Information from the PTA Last month we submitted 3,412 Box Tops to General Mills which means we will be receiving a check soon for $341.20. Over the lifetime of this program, Boght Hills has earned $13,467.60. These funds have been used over the years to help support many great programs the PTA runs. There are many Box Tops out there that expire on June 1st so keep up the good work and keeping sending them in. Congratulations to our gift card winners for March: Olivia Larsen (KG) and Bret Lortie (6W). Chess Club News The Second Annual Latham Ridge - Boght Hills Chess Competition was held March 30, 2017. Latham Ridge reclaims the trophy from Boght Hills in this competition with a 17-10 victory. Boght Hills won the first competition in 2016 with a 19-2 victory. Fourteen students from each school faced off across the chess boards to match their wits. The competition involved two games per student against different opponents. Latham Ridge took an early 10 1/2 to 3 1/2 lead after the first round, and Boght Hills fought for a draw in the second round with a 6 1/2 to 6 1/2 score. Each student gets one point for a win and a half point for a tie. Boght Hills and Latham Ridge are looking forward to a repeat event in 2018. Special thanks to the students and their parents to make this a memorable event. And special thanks to Jon Leisner of Latham Ridge and Michael Martinkat of Boght Hills to bring the students together for this friendly competition. Page
