WHAT IS A MOOT COURT? A method of teaching law and legal skills that requires students to analyze and argue both sides of a hypothetical legal issue using procedures modeled after those employed in appellate courts and arbitral tribunals. Hypothetical factual scenario (facts are established) One or more legal issues Each team argues both sides Written and oral submissions Compete against teams from all over the world Judges are (often) experts in the field

WHAT ABOUT THE STATE EXAM? Free Semester (gem. 25 II Nr. 5 JAG NRW) OR Schwerpunkt Seminar (with an independent paper related to the moot court problem) AND Foreign Language Certificate Seminar Certificate (not Schwerpunkt ) You can get a second free semester even if you already have one from the FFA program.

Participate in our Speed Moot Court this Friday (23 June) No Preparation or Prior Knowledge of Public International Law Required General Public International Law Topic All Materials Provided (English OR German) Approximately 4 hours at the Institute. THE COMPETITION Simulation of proceedings before the International Criminal Court National Round to qualify for International Round Small National Round (our Round consisted only of three teams) 64 teams from all over the world compete in the International Round

THE 24 TH UNIVERSITY OF BONN WILLEM C. VIS MOOT TEAM (2016/17)

WHAT IS THE VIS MOOT? An international mooting competition International in the sense that approximately 340 universities from roughly 90 countries are represented in the Vis Moot International in the sense that the applicable law is international commercial law, specifically Problem simulates a fictitious commercial dispute arising out of a sales contract between business entities. Dispute takes place before an Arbitral Tribunal Arbitration rules rotate each year, this year UNICTRAL Arbitration Rules All teams go to Vienna, no qualification rounds

WHEN IS THE VIS MOOT? The Vis Moot is split up into 4 separate stages (last year s dates) 1. Claimant s Memorandum: 7 October 2016 8 December 2016 2. Respondent s Memorandum: 12 December 2016 26 January 2017 3. Preparation for the Oral Phase: 29 January 2017 6 April 2017 4. Oral Phase: 7 April 2017 13 April 2017
