INTRODUCTION Pretoria High School for Girls is a state-aided FEE PAYING school which is governed by a Governing Body elected by the parents. The School receives a small contribution from the state for some services, but the school community is responsible for the greater portion of running costs of the school and hostel. PHSG is an academic school with the majority of learners attaining access for admission to a Bachelors Degree. It caters for a maximum of 1450 girls from Grade 8 12. There are two hostels which accommodate a total of 142 learners. An integral part of PHSG education is the extra-curricular programme. This includes regular cultural and sporting activities (compulsory for Grades 8 & 9) and compulsory attendance at special events such as matches, cultural evenings, evening meetings, community service projects and inter-house competitions. 2. CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE TO PHSG The following information is of the utmost importance: 2.1 Waiting List A.1 Learners whose parents permanent home address is the closest to the school; Siblings. 2.2 Waiting List A.2 Learners whose parents permanent work address is the closest to the school. 2.3 Waiting List B For learners who do not qualify in terms of 2.1 and 2.2 above. It is essential that application is also made by all learners to other schools, as acceptance into this school cannot be guaranteed, whether on the A or B list.
3. On the return of an application form, please attach the following: Checklist: 1. A certified copy of an unabridged birth certificate (computer generated certificate from the Department of Home Affairs). 2. Certified copy of the previous year end report showing both the learner and school names. (Gr 8 applicants to supply final Gr 6 report.) 3. Certified copies of Term 1 current year reports showing both the learner and school names. 4. Two recent ID photographs of the learner. Photos taken in 2014. 5. Certified copy of both parents/guardians Identity documents. If a legal guardian, written proof to be attached. (Legal document not an affidavit.) 6. Certified copy of both sides of Medical Aid Card and one copy of the ID of the main member of the Medical Aid. 7. If not a S A Citizen, a copy of both parents passports, the study permit, temporary or permanent residence permits, and those of the learner. 8. Original recently dated letter from Employer to confirm employment. 9. Proof of residential address. A certified copy of your lease agreement in name of parent/legal guardian of learner or the most recent original electricity account, in the name of the lessee. 10. One self-addressed envelope (small) (22cm X 11cm, DL) with postage stamp. PLEASE NOTE Please ensure that certified copies are provided where required, as originals will not be accepted, but must be presented for confirmation. No copies of documents will be made by the school. Completed application forms must be HAND DELIVERED to the school. No faxed or emailed application forms will be accepted. The school will not be held responsible for any application forms sent through the post and not received timeously. Daygirl applications to be returned by 12:00 on 27 May 2014. 4. SUBJECTS OFFERED The medium of instruction is English. Learners develop their language and communication skills in English (home language), Afrikaans (home or first additional language) OR Sepedi (first additional language) and French OR German (2 nd additional language). The learning areas other than Languages, Literature and Communication at Grade 8 & 9 level are: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Technology, Creative Arts and Life Orientation. RULES OF COMBINATION Grade 10 12 To qualify for a National Senior Certificate (NSC) in Grade 12 all learners must offer 7 subjects and meet minimum requirements with the following components: 4 compulsory subjects comprising: * English Home Language * Afrikaans Home Language or Afrikaans First Additional Language or Sepedi First Additional Language * Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy; and * Life Orientation. 3 choice subjects: * any 3 other approved NCS (National Curriculum Statement) subjects offered by Pretoria High School for Girls. Capable learners may offer more than the required minimum number of subjects set out above but must start with these subjects in Grade 10. Prior permission must be obtained from the school and the HOD of the Department of Education for any additional subjects. FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS 5.1 This is a fee-paying public school. School fees for 2014 are R24,300-00 and are compulsory. These are re-assessed every year. 5.2 The first month of school fees for 2015 (amount to be advised), which is nonrefundable is payable on acceptance of a learner. This amount will then be credited to your school fee account for the year 2015. 5.3 Limited subsidy is available on application, with full disclosure of financial status. Application should be made by the end of March 2015.
