ARTIST STATEMENT My work chronicles the emotional interactions and dialogues shared between myself and another at a specific time and stage in my own personal history. These investigations into the emotional dialogue in relationships are expressed through multiple layers of lines and colour that build to explore the visual impact of those emotions present, primary and nuanced, creating a unique chronicle or narration. These visual conversations become personal records that can be witnessed. The journey of expressing moments in relationships forces me to encounter and confront the extremes of emotional involvement and allows me to explore the often painful contrasts of exposure. Through this process I can create closure on unsaid moments. iii
PAINTING EXHIBITION RICHMOND CITY HALL 2017 VISUAL CONVERSATIONS -BLURRING THE LINES 4
In my current series of paintings, I explore emotional dialogues that occur from my own life experiences in interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. These emotions I explore through applied layers of artistic mediums, examining the build up, quickening, condensing, expanding and destructive natures as an individual visual conversation. By examining these conversations in great detail, I am able to form a narrative on memory, events and connections, allowing me to question my illusions and investigate the truthful nature of these human interactions. Visually this series is a softer approach based on the often unknown or blurry lines where emotions merge and recede from each other. This exhibition is made up of 10 paintings of conversations. The first 5 paintings are individual conversation studies, with the remaining 5 being a deeper, more focused exploration into a single conversation. These paintings, though parts of a whole, have their own individual qualities and personalities that produce their own uniqueness and presence. When placed together, they present the multiple layers of complexity existing in each of us during our many interactions in relationships each one alive in the moment, vying for attention, but ultimately amalgamating into one whole. 5
