ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION AND INDEXING FOR RANKING DEGREE COURSES I ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION Those candidates who are Eligible for Higher Studies as per the Higher Secondary Examination or a pass in the equivalent examination is the minimum criteria for admission to degree courses, unless otherwise specified. Candidates qualified in the annual examination held during the March of the preceding academic year or its preceding supplementary / annual examinations alone are eligible for admission. However, candidates who have qualified the HSE and VHSE of the Government of Kerala under SAY scheme and Compartmental Examination of CBSE are also eligible for admission to first year degree courses in the same academic year. (U.O. No. GA I /A2/ 5753/2000 dated 14.05.2004) Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination of Tamil Nadu (Private study)shall not be admitted to any course under this University. (U.O. No. GA I/A1/5062/2002 dated 07.07.2005). i. B.A. Courses : Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination of the Kerala State Board of Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto are eligible for admission to the BA degree courses. ii BMMC (Bachelor of Multimedia Communication) : Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary examination of the Kerala State Board of Higer Secondary Examination or anyother examination recognised as equivalent thereto with not less than 45% marks in aggregate shall be eligible to apply for admission to the BMMC programme.

iii B.Sc. Courses 1.B.Sc. Bio-Technology: Candidates with Science course for the Higher Secondary Examination (eligible for higher studies) or Pre-Degree with Biology of this University or from recognised Indian or Foreign University / Institution / Board are eligible for admission to the BSc. Bio-Technology course.(u.o. No. GA I/J1/ 6775/1998 dated 30-09-2000). 2.B.Sc. Food Technology: Candidates must have studied Science with Mathematics at Plus two level for seeking admission to B.Sc Food Technology Programme with effect from 2010 admission onwards vide U.O. No. GAI/J1/7359/2003 dated 20.01.2010. 3. B.Sc. Aquaculture / Industrial Fish and Fisheries :Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination with a minimum total of (45%) for the subjects - Biology, Physics and Chemistry - are eligible for admission. A concession of (5%) will be given to OBC/OEC candidates. The SC/ST candidates need get only a pass (eligible for higher studies). (GAI/J1/4040/1999 dated 12.11.2001). 4.B.Sc. Environment and Water Management : Candidates who have studied any two science subjects at the Higher Secondary Examination level and passed (eligible for higher studies) are eligible for admission. (U.O. No. GA I/ J1/3572/1999 Vol. II (i) dated 19.07.2005). 5.B.Sc. Information Technology: The eligibility for admission to B.Sc..Information Technology is a pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks with Mathematics as one of the papers. A concession of 5% ma r ks will be given to OBC/OEC candidates. The SC/ST candidates need get only a pass (eligible for higher studies). (U.O.No. GA1/J1/4918/2000 dated 13.10.2000. 6.B.Sc. Biochemistry : Candidates who have studied both Chemistry and Biology at the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent level and passed (eligible for higher studies) are eligible for admission (U.O No. GAI/J1/7545/1998 dated 10-08-1999)

Instrumentation: The eligibility for admission to this course will be a pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination, science group with Mathematics or PDC I or II group with additional Mathematics. Computer Science: Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the HSE or an equivalent examination with Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Science / ComputerApplication etc. as one of the subjects are eligible for admission. Costume and Fashion Designing : A pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, is the eligibility for admission. The selection will be based on the marks obtained at the qualifying exam, Entrance Test & Counselling. ( GA I/J1/6301/1999 dated 12/05/2000) 10. B.Sc. Biophysics: A pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology or Pre-degree with Biology. (GA I/J1/956/2000 dated 16/10/2000) 11. B.Sc. Microbiology / Industrial Microbiology: A pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Physics, chemistry, Biology or Predegree with Biology. 12. B.Sc. Chemistry / Industrial Chemistry / Polymer Chemistry:Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Science subjects are eligible. 13. B.Sc. Family and Community Science: Candidates who have studied science subjects at the Higher Secondary Examination or equivalent examination and passed (eligible for higher studies) will be considered as eligible for admission. 14. B.Sc. Mathematics / Statistics:Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Mathematics group are eligible. Candidates who have studied Mathematics / Computer Application / Statistics etc. with other combinations at HSE level are also eligible for admission. (U.O. No. GAI/J1/4756/1999 dated 11.01.2002) 15. B.Sc. Botany / Zoology / Plant Science:Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Biology as a compulsory paper or PDC with Second group are eligible for admission. 16. B.Sc. Physics :Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary

Examination or an equivalent examination with Science subjects are eligible. 17. B.Sc. Geology: Candidates who have studied Science subjects at Plus two level are eligible for admission to B.Sc Programme in Geology, since Geology is taught as a subject at Plus two level in both Science and Humanities stream, those candidates who have studied Geology at Plus two level are also eligible for the course ( with effect from 2010 admission vide U.O. No. GAI/J2/2492/07 dated 04.02.2010). 18. B.Sc. Geography:Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination of the Kerala State Board or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto are eligible.( U.O.No. GAI/B1/1690/2000 dated 27.05.2008) 19. B.Sc. Psychology: Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination are eligible to seek admission to B.Sc.Psychology.(U.O.No.GAI/J1/628/2003 dated 15.5.2004) 20. B.Sc. Applied Statistics with Computer Application and Actuarial Science: The eligibility for admission is a pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent with Mathematics / Statistics as one of the optional subjects(u.o.no. GA I/J1/5580/ 1999 dated 02.08.2004) 21. B.Sc. Electronics: Students who have studied Electronics/Physics/Mathematics as one of the optional subjects at Higher Secondary Examination level and passed (eligible for higher studies) are eligible for admission. (U.O. No. GA I/ J1/ 2924/2005 (2) dated 28.07.2005) 22. B.Sc. Genetics: Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and any branch of Life Science(U.O.No.GA1/J1/6814/2005 dated 16.3.2006) 23. B.Sc. Hotel Management and Catering Science: A pass (eligible for higher studies) in Higher Secondary Examination from any stream or any other equivalent qualification with a minimum of 50% (in 6 subjects). A concession of 5% will be given to OBC/OEC candidates. The SC/ST candidates need get only a pass (eligible for higher studies).the age of candidates for admission should not be below 17 years as on 1 st July of the academic year. (U.O. No. GA I/ J1/9363/2001 dated 27.05.2003). iii B.T.H.M. (Bachelor of Tourism and Hotel Management): Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the HSE of a 10+2 system or an equivalent examination are eligible for admission to the BTHM, 3 year degree course. However the admission is subject to written test and personal interview of the candidates by the respective colleges. The age of such a candidate should not be below

17 years as on the 1 st of July of the academic year in which admission is sought. iv B.C.A. ( Bachelor of Computer Application): Candidates who have passed (eligible for higher studies) the HSE or an equivalent examination with Mathematics / Computer Science / Computer Application / Informatics Practices as one of the subjects are eligible for admission to the BCA course. (U.O. No. GA I / J1/ 2453/1997 dated 06.10.2000 and GA1/J1/1597/2005 dated 11.7.2005). v B.Com. (Bachelor of Commerce): A pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent, with at least one Commerce subject, is the eligibility for admission to the BCom. degree course. Candidates who have not taken at least one Commerce subject for Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination should get at least 45% (in 6 subjects) in that examination to become eligible to seek admission to B.Com course. A concession of 5% will be given to OBC / OEC candidates. The SC / ST candidates need get only a pass (eligible for higher studies) (U.O.No.GA1/ A2/1658/ 2007 dated 28.02.2008). vi B.B.A. (Bachelor of Business Administration):Any candidate who has passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, with not less than 50% is eligible for admission to the BBA degree course. A concession of 5% will be given to OBC / OEC candidates. The SC / ST candidates need get only a pass (eligible for higher studies).(u.o.no. GA I/J2/2907/03 dated 23.07.2004 & U.O.No.GA1/A2/1658/ 2007 dated 28.02.2008). vii B.P.E. (Bachelor of Physical Education): 1. Candidates passed (eligible for higher studies) the Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto or a certificate course in Physical education of at least two years duration after passing SSLC and recognized by the University of Calicut are eligible. 2. Candidates should be between the age of 17 to 23 as on 1 st December of the year for admission to BPE course. Relaxation upto 4 years in the upper age limit shall be given to candidates who have represented State/University in AIU recognized sports disciplines, or in service candidates who have at least two years of service as Physical Education Teachers or SC/ST candidates. 3. Candidates should be medically fit for heavy load of physical activities and should not have any Physical deformity or mental disability or disability which prevents him/her from actively participating in vigorous sports activities. However, selection to the course is done on the basis of admission tests prevailing in the year as prescribed by the University. A candidate who has passed/appeared/discontinued I/II/III year of any other degree course recognized by this University or equivalent is also eligible to seek admission to BPE course.

(Bachelor of Social Welfare): The eligibility for admission to the BSW degree course is a pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto. (U.O. No. GAI/ B1/ 3363/ 2004 dated 30.06.2005) ix B.H.M. (Bachelor of Hotel Management): Candidates with a pass (eligible for higher studies) in the Higher Secondary Examination or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto are eligible for admission to the BHM (professional course ) with a duration of four academic years. Process of Admission : The admission shall be through an entrance examination and personal interview. The rank list shall be published after considering the scores in the qualifying examination, entrance examination and personal interview. (U.O No. GA1/J2/ 2907 / 2003 dated 28.7.2004) x B.L.I.Sc. (Bachelor of Library and Information Science): The eligibility for admission to the BLISc. degree course is a pass with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate, in the BA/ B.Sc./ B.Com/ B.Tech or any other Bachelors degree of the University of Calicut or a degree from any other University recognized as equivalent thereto, subject to the general pattern approved by the University. Relaxation of 5% in the minimum marks is applicable to OBC/OEC candidates. SC/ST candidates need get only a pass. (U.O. No. GA I/B1/2192/1996 dated 13.03.2000). II ASSESSMENT OF MERIT - FOR DEGREE ADMISSION The Marks obtained in the Plus Two examinations have to be taken in to account and the total index marks are calculated as follows(uo No. GA1/A2/1658/2007 dated 28.02.2008). The merit of the candidate shall be assessed for ranking on the basis of marks obtained by him / her in the qualifying examination for admission to the particular course, subject to such criteria as may be prescribed by the University. For admission to Degree courses, the marks obtained in the Plus Two examination conducted by the State Board of Higher Secondary Examination is taken as the standard. i) BONUS /WEIGHTAGE MARKS 1. Bonus / weightage marks will be added to the total Marks obtained in the qualifying examination to calculate the index marks and for ranking in the selection list in the case of candidates who already possess the required minimum marks prescribed. 2. A weightage of 15 marks added to the total shall be given in the case of ex-serviceman, widows and children of Jawan and ex-serviceman, and to the widows and children of B.S.F. personnel

killed or disabled in action, for admission to BA /BSc / B.Com courses. 3. Students who have worked in the Illiteracy Eradication Programme on voluntary basis for atleast one year will be allowed 15 marks as bonus/weightage for the purpose of ranking. 4. 15 marks shall be awarded as bonus marks to N.S.S / N.C.C cadets subject to the fulfilment of the following conditions, for the purpose of ranking. a. In respect of NCC applicants the bonus marks will be awarded on the basis ofncc certificates signed by the Director and issued by the Directorate of NCC to the candidates who have secured at least 75% of attendance after having participated in its activities during the course of the study immediately preceding the course for which admission is sought. b. The basis for awarding bonus marks to NSS participants will be NSS certificate signed by the Director and issued by the Directorate of NSS. c. The benefit of bonus marks for the purpose of admission can be availed by thecandidates only under any one category, either N.S.S or N.C.C. d. Cadets holding A,B,C certificates are eligible for an additional weightage of 3,5,10 marks respectively for admission to Degree courses, limited to a maximum of 1 point only. e. The bonus points or additional weightage marks will be given only in the case of those NCC Certificates on the basis of which no grace marks have already been awarded. 5. A bonus / weightage of (10marks)will be given to those who got First place / A grade in the Kerala State Higher Secondary / Vocational Higher Secondary Arts Festivals. 6. 10 marks shall be deducted for every successive attempt after first attempt out of the ranking points to those who have taken two or more chances to complete the qualifying examination, subject to a maximum of 25 marks. The number of chances means the number of chances taken for passing any part or parts of the qualifying examination. Betterment of examination will not be considered as a chance.

ii) INDEXING FOR RANKING B.A. English : Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the total marks + twice the total marks secured in English of the plus two examination or an equivalent examination. A weightage of 20 marks will be given to those who have studied English as optional subject for HSE or an equivalent examination. If there is a tie in the ranking, the priority will be given to those who got more marks in English. If there is again a tie, marks in second language is considered and then the general conditions are applicable. B.A. Other Languages: Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the total marks+ twice the marks in the concerned additional language of the HSE or an equivalent examination. For those who have taken the language concerned as optional for the Plus Two or an equivalent examination a weightage of 20 marks will be given. If there is a tie in the ranking, the priority will be given to those who got more marks in second language. If there is again a tie, more marks in English is considered and then the general conditions are applicable. B.A. Music : Total Plus Two marks + a weightage of 25marks for those who have studied Music in Plus Two level + marks awarded in the aptitude test held in the colleges. Note : Candidates certified as having no aptitude in music are not eligible for admission. B.A. Other Subjects (Under Faculty of Humanities) : Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the total marks + a weightage of points for those who have taken the particular optional subject for the Plus Two or the equivalent examination which is as follows. Again if there is a tie, then the total marks in English, then the total marks in second language are considered. After that the general conditions are applicable. B.Sc. Courses : i Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the total marks obtained for part III + the total marks obtained for the concerned optional subject put together unless specified otherwise. i If two candidates have same index marks, priority must be given to the candidates who secure more total marks in the concerned main subject. If there is again a tie, then the total marks of compulsory subsidiary subjects and then the total marks of the second subsidiary subject are to be considered. If there is a tie even after that, then the total marks of English, the total marks of second language are considered and at last the general conditions are applied. B.Sc. Computer Science / BCA / Information Technology i The total marks secured in part III subjects + total marks in Mathematics in the case of Science group students with Mathematics as one of the subjects in the Plus Two examination. i The total marks secured in Part III + total marks in Computer Science as the case may be in the case of other combinations without Mathematics as a subject in the qualifying examination. iii If there is a tie in the index marks priority must be given to the marks of Mathematics /Computer Science as the case may be. If there is again a tie, the total marks of the second subsidiary subject, the marks of the English, and then the marks of the second language will be considered before going on to the general conditions. B.Sc. Electronics: i For preparing rank list for admission to B.Sc Electronics, The total marks of Electronics / Physics/ Mathematics will be added as the case may be to the part III total marks in qualifying examination. If more than one of the subjects had been offered at the plus two level, the subject with the highest total marks will be added. An additional weightage of 25marks will be added for those who have studied Electronics at the Plus Two level. i If there is tie in the index marks, the priority must be given to the total marks of Physics, then the marks of Mathematics will be taken in to account. If there is again a tie, then the marks of English,

the marks of second language and finally the general conditions are applicable. B.Sc. Psychology i The applicants will be ranked on the basis of the total marks obtained for the qualifying examination (Total of Part I, Part II and Part III) plus marks obtained for the Psychology optional subject if they have studied Psychology at the Plus two level i In the case of other optional subject ranking will be based on total marks obtained in the qualifying examination without any weightage. iii In the case of Science students those who have not studied Psychology with same index marks in the ranklist, priority will be given to the Biology students. In all other aspects general rules should be followed (Vide U.O. No. GAI/J2/3153/2007 dated 21.06.2008 B.Sc. Geology The index marks shall be calculated in the following manner. 1. Science Stream: The total marks obtained for Part III optionals at the Higher Secondary or equivalent level plus highest marks scored for any one of the Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Computer Science and Mathematics. A bonus marks of 20% of Geology paper should be given for those candidates who have taken Geology as one of the optional subjects at Higher Secondary or equivalent examination. In the case of tie preference shall be given as per the following order. a) Candidates with Geology as one of the Optional subjects b) Marks for Geology c) Marks for Chemistry d) Marks for Mathematics e) Date of Birth II Humanities Stream: Geology is a Science subject. However, it is also being offered in the Humanities Stream at the Plus two level. In this special circumstances special norms are being prescribed for calculating index mark.

Total mark obtained in the Part III optional plus marks obtained for the Geology paper. Bonus marks of 20% of Geology paper shall be added for preparing the index mark.. In the case of tie, preference shall be given as per the following order. a) Marks for Geology b) Marks for Computer Science c) Date of Birth ( U.O. No. GAI/J2/2492/2007 dated 04.02.2010) B.Sc. Environmental Science and Water Management :Marks shall be calculated as a sum of the total marks scored in Part III subjects and ¼ the marks scored in Biology. Those who have not studied Biology will not get the weightage. If there is a tie, the candidates with higher total marks in Part III shall get preference. If there is tie again, the candidate with higher marks in Biology or VHSE under Commerce stream, subject to a maximum of 50marks shall be added to the total marks. The Management paper of Plus Two, CBSE, VHSE or an equivalent examination can be considered as Commerce subject for indexing points for admission to B.Com course. If there is a tie in the index marks, those who studied commerce in the Plus Two course should get preference. If there is again a tie, the total marks in the Commerce subjects will be considered first, then the total marks of English and then the marks of second language will be considered. Finally the general conditions are applicable. B.B.A : If there is a tie in the index marks,those who studied Commerce in the Plus Two level will get an advantage. If there is again a tie, the marks in English should be considered then the marks in the second language and then the general conditions are applicable. iii) GENERAL CONDITIONS a. The admission of the students who obtained the same index marks shall be decided first on the basis of age and then by name in alphabetical order unless otherwise specified. (U.O. No. GA1/A2/ 7226/200 dated 04-05- 2001) b. While indexing marks for B.Com admission in the case of VHSE students, marks secured in practical papers of Commerce, VHSE Management studies and Humanities should be excluded. Only the marks secured in written theory papers excluding the subject offered in lieu of second language should be considered for indexing purpose. (U.O. No. GA1/A2/6127/95 dated 28-11-2000) c. In the case of VHSE students for admission to B.A. Language and Literature degree course, the index marks shall be arrived by avoiding the marks of the vocational subjects of VHSE (U.O. No. GA1/A2/6127/95 dated 14-12-2000).

d. In the case of courses equivalent to Plus two of Kerala HSE and have maximum marks or grades not in line with that of Plus two of Kerala HSE, the same will be normalized to the maximum marks of Plus two of Kerala HSE and the rank list will be prepared accordingly.
