Monday, May 5, 2014 Board Meeting Notes I. Call to Order, Roll Call, Pledge of Allegiance, Greetings to Visitors- Kelly Rees was not present. II. Public Participation -NONE III. Additions/Deletions/Changes to Agenda - NONE IV. Reports/Presentations/Discussion Items A. Recognition of Sidney High School Academia Team John Scheu Resolution of recognition. Shelby County title 6 straight years; GWOC North champions; ranked 26 in nation; qualified for 2 national championships; outstanding record. This is a program of pride for Sidney City Schools and these students accomplishments deserve to be recognized! John Scheu recognized each member of the team, giving them a certificate. B. Longfellow Elementary Fran Dembski Fran Dembski shared about the volunteer program - 18 volunteers who help in the classrooms throughout the year. Bob Ruboiskic shared his volunteer experiences as he works with Mrs. Marquez s class listening to students as they read and doing flash cards. He tries to keep it fun while they re learning. It s a good experience for him, and he enjoys working with the students. Mitch Gale share his volunteer experiences working with Mrs. Jacobs. He previously volunteered with TEAMS at Central. This is 6 year of volunteering. He works with students on sounds and word/sentence structure. For him the experience is fun, a change of pace to come to the school on his lunch break and work with the students. Both spend their lunchtime volunteering. Fran Dembski also shared the Sneak Peek at Summer Fun. Parent Advisory Council developed this evening to help show what Sidney/Shelby County have to offer our students at Longfellow. There will be 15 presenters - Lowes, Amos, YMCA, Sidney fire department, Shelby sheriff's, busy bouncing, Cosi and more. It is Longfellow s Title I event for the end of the year. 16 different companies donated coupons and goodies. It will take place this Wednesday from 5-8pm. C. Donation from Gateway Arts Council Ellen Keyes, Executive Director and Chris Gibbs, President GAC has a 21 year history with the school system and using the SHS auditorium. They feel the facility matches customer base and needs. In recent use, the lighting hasn't always worked perfectly. GAC contracted someone to fix the lighting. The pair presented a paid bill. John Scheu thanked Chris and Ellen. Appreciate everything you've done to enhance our auditorium. D. FCCLA National Meeting (Ref. Item) Cindy Lieurance Cindy Lieurance reported that Sidney Middle School FCCLA has 35 active members. It has been in existence for 3 years. A group of students won at regionals and state and are now heading to national competition in Texas. Regan Carey and Olivia Preria gave an abbreviated version of their presentation. E. Board Meeting Conflict on June 16 Rescheduled Date, June 17 John Scheu is a member of the Straight-A Fund board. Move the board date to June 17. 5:30pm. F. Levy Update Levy Co-Chairs Renee Davis shared that levy co-chairs and committee have been in constant communication. Successful door to door, 60 volunteers last weekend. Very busy weekend, but able to get the job done. Ads in both newspapers. Hopeful to have thank you ads later this week. Last minute One Call now reminders to go out. Fundraising efforts complete. Raised private donations, able to

have successful, integrated campaign. Reach in different mediums. Grateful for SDN for the opportunity to run the Q/A. John Scheu thanked Bill, Renee and Lisa for their efforts, strategies, and running a positive campaign. V. Treasurer s Report A. Acceptance of Donation Motion to accept a donation for upgrading the sound light system in the SHS auditorium from the Gateway Arts Council, valued at $285.00. B. School Bus Purchase (Ref. Item) Motion to approve the purchase of a school bus from Cardinal Bus Sales for $86,552 in fiscal year 2015. Mike Watkins added that this is part of our continued plan. One/two/one...2014 is our year to purchase one. John Scheu reminded board that the state used to reimburse 50%, now reimburses $0. Size of fleet- 25 busses, 22...one spare, John Scheu added that the double bus routing (MS/HS and Elementary) allows us to run with fewer busses. 15 bus drivers. C. Carpet Replacement (Ref. Item) Motion to approve the carpet removal and installation by Lowe s at Emerson Elementary at the cost of $13,330.04 to be paid with monies from the insurance claim. Mike Watkins added that this is from the broken water line we had at Emerson in January. Eric Finke added that this will cover 5 classrooms and hallway. Bill asked about an asbestos check, yes, building was checked. VI. Superintendent s Report A. Approval of Out-of-State Student Trip Motion to approve an out-of-state trip for five FCCLA members to San Antonio, Texas for the national conference July 6-11, 2014. John Scheu This is the first time they have ever gone to Nationals. Bob Smith noted that he was extremely impressed with how well they spoke, especially considering they are 8th graders! B. Retirement (Ref. Item) Motion to accept the resignation due to retirement of Ann Morris, MD teacher at SHS, effective 5/30/14. (25 yrs. SCS/26 yrs. total) C. Resignation (Ref. Item) Motion to accept the following resignations effective 5/31/14: Amber Scott, SHS social studies teacher

Mark Hilbun, SMS inclusion teacher John Scheu Mark is going to Jackson center where he lives. Amber Scott is going to Denver. D. Personnel Motion to approve the following personnel actions as recommended by the superintendent, per the adopted salary schedule, proper certification, previous employment verifications, and successful BCI/FBI report, where applicable. 2013-2014 School Year 1. Certified Substitute Employ Dale Schwartz on a one-year limited, as-needed contract as a substitute teacher at $87.53/day, effective 5/5/14. 2. Classified Substitute Employ Marcia Vordemark for the following positions on one-year limited, as-needed contracts, effective 5/5/14: substitute aide at $10.22/hr substitute secretary at $12.34/hr substitute cook at $8.81/hr 3. Student Summer Help Employ the following on one-year limited, as-needed contracts as summer workers at $7.95/hr: Travious Burns, effective 5/27/14 Bria Foy, effective 5/27/14 Devin Huffman, effective 5/20/14 Brandi Johnson, effective 5/27/14 Grace Lochard, effective 5/27/14 Tyler Schlagetter, effective 5/27/14 Taylor Young, effective 5/20/14 2014-2015 School Year 1. Certified Staff Employ the following on one-year limited contracts effective 8/15/14: Evan Jackson, SHS guidance counselor, Masters+15, Step 8, $53,876 (less 2 unpaid days per SEA agreement $53,294) Anne Geise, SMS guidance counselor, Masters, Step 0, $36,934 (less 2 unpaid days per SEA agreement $36,535) 2. Substitute Cafeteria Truck Drivers Employ the following on one-year limited, asneeded contracts as substitute cafeteria truck drivers: Tammy Herring step 6 at $14.54/hr, effective 8/19/14 Leslie Smith step 0 at $12.04/hr, effective 8/19/14 John Scheu - Marcia just retired as secretary of Whittier - wonderful to add to our list of subs. Evan and Ann, feel both of them will fit in well with what we're trying to do. E. Adoption of Policies Motion to conduct the second reading and adopt the following new/revised/replacement policies. These schools agree to conduct their athletic programs in accordance with the Constitution, Bylaws, Regulations, interpretations, and decisions of the OHSAA for the 2014-2015 school year. G. Change of Board Meeting Location Motion to change the location for all board meetings to the B.O.E. office beginning with the 2014-2015 school year. John Scheu He feels the current arrangement of going to different locations is confusing to the public. Acoustics in the building aren't always the best. Beginning in September. Bob Smith asked if each building will continue to share. Certainly appreciate that idea, will continue. VII. U.V.C.C. Report Bill Ankney and Paul Heins Bill Ankney and Paul Heins reported that the San Antonio trip was approved. It s business as usual at UVCC. They are holding the end of the year programs for the kids. VIII. Motion to Adjourn to Executive Session - NONE IX. Reconvene X. Motion to Adjourn Meeting ended 6:45pm.
