Dinesh Sharma From the Desk of Editor Greetings to all the readers!!! It is always a pleasure to write for our newsletter and share the activities of the branch, to bring to all of you the writing skills of writers, recent amendments and the like. The month of January has really been wonderful. At first, the first day of this month marks the New Year. When we say New Year, a sense of newness, of renewal is created. We make resolutions to improve and be a better person. Further, this month gave us an enduring happiness. It gave us an opportunity to interact with students all across the nation at National Convention for CA Students (18th and 19th January, 2014) organised by Board of Studies and hosted by our branch jointly with NICASA. The theme of the Convention was "Empowering Youth - To Learn, To Lead, To Serve, To Shine." Students came forward and participated in organizing the two day event. It was entirely a students' show. The zeal and efforts exhibited by them are worth appreciating. Moreover, the paper presenters deliberated on the issues which are marking the dawn of our profession in Contemporary fields. In this edition, we are including the details and photographs of students adjudged as the best paper presenters. We also extend our gratitude towards members who helped us in selecting the paper presenters. When such has been the beginning of a year, so wonderful and amazing; it fills one with the enthusiasm to perform more and to perform better. It is rightfully said "Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work." Before I close, Wishing you and your family a joyful, bright, healthy, prosperous and happiest new year ahead. Regards CA. BRANCH ACTIVITIES DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 2014 1. National Convention for CA students was organised by Board of Studies and hosted by Ludhiana Branch of NIRC of ICAI and NICASA on 18th and 19th January, 2014 at KVM School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana. Shri K.V. Chowdary, Hon'ble Member Investigation, CBDT graced the Convention as the 'Chief Guest'. Ms. Nishi Singh, Hon'ble CCIT, Ludhiana and Shri S.T. Ahmad, Hon'ble Director General (Inv.) were the guests of honour at the convention. The convention was attended by more than 1300 students across the nation. 2. Orientation Programme, GMCS-I Classes and Information Technology Training were conducted on regular basis. 3. GMCS final was conducted from 28th January 2014 which constituted 34 students. It s one chapter of George Dantzig s life story, George Dantzig s was a great American Mathematician and known as the `father of linear programming'. One day Dantzig walked into his classroom at California Berkley. He was late to class and all that he noticed were two statistics problems written on the board. He took down the same and during the next three days he sat and solved the same and gave to his mathematics teacher. The teacher was shocked. Before Dantzig came to the class, the mathematics Professor Neyman wrote these problems on the board and explained that these problems have not been solved by anyone and even Einstein could not solve the same! Other students never bothered to solve a problem which was not solved by anyone. Since Dantzig was late to class, he did not have this limitation in his mind and hence solved the problem! Sometimes we are limited by the discouraging words of others. They may be right from their point of view. We need others as `sounding boards', but we have to decide what we want and work towards the same. Quote 'Story of Sounding Boards' Don't believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding, find out what you already know, and you'll see the way to fly' Richard Bach We are what our mind makes us to be. Our mind can make us confident or diffident. Our mind can make us optimistic or pessimistic This story is dedicated to all learners who believe in constant updating of their skills. Training programs structured or unstructured have value additions for all of us It s up to us to listen to the limitations or to take them as a tool to understanding. CA.
