PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION Accounting is very much essential for successful operations of all business concerns. Accounting information provides valuable guidance to the management specifically for the decision-making activities. Anna University has introduced MBA and MCA courses. It has rightly incorporated one paper on Financial and Management Accounting in the first semester of this course. This book has been specifically designed for the students of MBA and MCA courses according to the revised syllabus. And it is also helpful to the beginners of accounting. Everywhere, the principles of Accountancy are the same in all walks of life. But, there are differences of opinion as to the suitable methods of incorporating these principles. This book is also helpful for non-accounting students as it provides simplified methods for the preparation of accounts in a lucid manner which will enable them to acquire sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge. The foremost aim of introducing this book is to facilitate understanding of the matter at one reading without any strain in grasping the theories and illustrations. The book consists of four parts viz., financial accounting, cost accounting, management accounting and financial management. For the benefit of the students, nearly 250 problems have been collected from various university question papers. All the problems are worked out in a very simple method. For example, in the fund flow analysis, the increase or decrease in working capital is found out only on net result and not from item-wise comparison. In this way, problems in all the chapters are worked out in a short cut and easy method. For the simplification of all the chapters, procedures and/or formulas have been incorporated at appropriate places. Generally, MBA, MCA students feel accounting is a difficult subject, but the readers of this book will realize that it is not so. At the same time, I do not claim any originality, but I have taken much pain to present the subject in simple and systematic manner. It is the outcome of my teaching experience in this subject for several years. This book is useful not only for the management and commerce students but also more helpful to the students of BE courses of various branches of Anna University. I have made serious efforts to remove the printing mistakes of the book. Apart from my serious efforts, if the reader finds any error, he is requested to convey the same to me. I believe that both the students and teachers will find the book very useful. I will be very happy in receiving constructive criticism and appropriate suggestions for improving the quality of presentation and standard of the book in the next edition. I feel it is a great opportunity to construct the new edition of Accounting for Management book for the commerce and non-commerce students of MBA, MCA courses. Author (vi )

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION Ihave great pleasure in bringing out the third revised edition of this Accounting for Management book after giving due weightage to the suggestions made by our esteemed readers. I am grateful to the readers for giving a wholehearted and continuous support to the second edition of our book. All the chapters of this book have been completely revised and is now incorporating a lot of new problems taken for the recent professional and various University examinations. These new problems are worked out clearly. As per the request of the students, Readers and Professors from various Institutions, number of University examination problems is incorporated at the end of the each chapter as Students exercise. This book has now been augmented by new chapter on Computerized Accounting. I am sure that the above aspect will make this book an invaluable asset for the student community of B.Com; BBA; BBM; M.Com; MBA; MCA; courses of all Indian Universities and CA (Inter), CS (Inter), ICWA (Inter), Post Graduate Diploma in Business, Management courses of professional and Management Institutes of India. I am delighted to acknowledge the valuable suggestions from the students and professors of various colleges and these suggestions have been duly incorporated in the present revised third edition. I have made serious efforts to remove all the printing errors found in the second edition. Even then, if the readers come across any error he/she is pleased to point out the same to us. Any criticism or suggestions for improving the quality of the book will be greatly acknowledged and highly appreciated. Author (vii )
