Administer Degrees of Reading Power Practice Test Direct students through the login process using instructions in the guide entitled, Log Students into Degrees of Reading Power The Practice Test differs from an operational form in that no Online Reports will be generated from the Practice Tests. Instead, after students select SCORE MY TEST, they will see an on-screen score report. When the student exits the test, the score report will disappear. Once students are logged into the DRP Student Testing system, and have verified and selected their test on the Test Identification screen, they should see the Test Directions screen. Read the script below (as needed) to help your students get started. I will read the directions to you. Please follow along. You should now see a screen that says: Follow these directions to complete the test. Raise your hand if you do not see the Directions screen. Pause. Read each passage carefully. Make sure to use the scrollbar to view the entire passage and all of the items. Click on the letter next to the answer you have chosen. Use the Arrow tool to point and click. With the arrow, you can click on answers or buttons, move the scroll bar, or select any of the other test-taking tools. When you first log on, the Arrow tool is automatically activated. Pause. Use the NEXT and BACK buttons to move to the next screen or back to the previous screens. Scroll down to see the rest of the tools. Use the REVIEW button to check your answers and submit your test. You are not required to use the following tools, but you may find them helpful. Raise your hand if you are not able to scroll down. Assist students as needed. You may use: the BOOKMARK tool to mark an item for later review. the HIGHLIGHTER tool to highlight key text in the passage. the QUESTION MARK button to open a pop-up showing the instructions I am now reading. To close the Test Directions, click on CLOSE, located in the top right corner of the Test Directions pop-up. Pause. the ANSWER CROSS-OFF tool to cross off answers that are not correct. To remove the X, click on the answer choice again. Pause. the MAGNIFIER tool to enlarge the text and objects on the screen. You can click on either the Magnifier tool again or on the Arrow tool to exit magnify mode. Pause. the LINE READER tool to help you read lines of text. 3

The PAUSE button will exit you from the test, and you will need to enter your username and password to log in again. Are there any questions? Answer any questions. Click BEGIN. Students should now see the screen with the first sample item. During Degrees of Reading Power, a small, colored circle appears in the lower left corner of the screen. This is the connectivity indicator, designed to show that the computer is connected to the server. A green circle indicates connected to the server, while a red circle indicates not connected, meaning the connection has been disrupted. If a connectivity indicator turns red, or a student sees an error message saying An unexpected problem occurred while ending test. Warning: Responses could not be sent to the server. Responses were saved to the user profile location, contact school IT personnel to report the internet connection issue. The student can continue testing even if connectivity is lost. It doesn t stop the student from testing. Once the internet connection has been restored, student responses can be sent to the server by relaunching the DRP Student Testing system. NOTE: When a student s computer becomes disconnected during testing, the student s answers are saved locally until connectivity is restored. The student can therefore continue testing. Once we start, you will see a small green circle in the lower left corner of your screen. If you see the circle change to red at any time during the test, please raise your hand and I will check to make sure your computer is connected. Does everyone see the green circle? During the test, monitor the room to check that all connectivity indicators remain green. The DRP Practice Test starts with Sample Item 1. Please follow along as I read the instructions on the screen: This is a test to find out how well you read. The test contains passages for you to read. Words are missing from the passages. Wherever a word is missing, there is a blank line with a number on it. Next to the passage you will find the same number and five words. Choose the word that makes the best sense in the blank. Then click on the letter next to the word you have chosen. 4

Read Sample S-1 and click on the answer. EXAMINERS SHOULD NOT READ THE SAMPLE ITEMS ALOUD. GIVE STUDENTS TIME TO DO SAMPLE 1 BY THEMSELVES. After students have done Sample 1, For Sample S-1, you should have clicked on the letter D because weather makes the best sense in the blank. As you can see, you may not be sure of the answer to a question until you have read the sentences that come after the blank. So be sure to read enough to choose your answer. Are there any questions? Answer any questions. Let s try another sample item. Click the NEXT arrow at the bottom of your screen. 5

Read Sample S-2 and click on the answer. EXAMINERS SHOULD NOT READ THE SAMPLE ITEMS ALOUD. GIVE STUDENTS TIME TO DO SAMPLE 2 BY THEMSELVES. For Sample S-2, you should have clicked on the letter A because rain makes the best sense in the blank. As you work on this test, you will find that the passages become harder to read. Do your best to read and answer as much as you can. Remember, you may need to scroll to read the entire passage and all the items. Are there any questions? Answer any questions. 6

A few final words before we begin. When you get to the last passage, the NEXT button will be replaced with a green REVIEW button that will bring you to the Review screen. From the Review screen, you can return to any of the items on the test by clicking on the item number. Then return to the Review screen by clicking the REVIEW button. When you are ready to finish your test, you will click on the SUBMIT MY TEST button on the Review screen. You may now click NEXT to begin the test. Move around the room during the test session in order to make sure that everyone is following directions. Make sure that students are recording their answers properly. Be sure to monitor students during the entire test session. Once students are finished, This is the end of the DRP Practice Test. If you are on the Review page, be sure to click the SUBMIT MY TEST button at the bottom of the page to have your test scored. If you have not finished the session, click NEXT to advance through each unanswered item on your test until you see the REVIEW button. Click the REVIEW button and then click SUBMIT to have your answers scored. Once you have completed your test, you will return to the DRP Test Menu screen. From the Test Menu screen, locate EXIT at the bottom of the screen. Click once on EXIT to log out of the testing application. If you have any questions, please raise your hand. Answer any questions the students may have. This completes the DRP Practice Test. 7
