ii UP Statistics at a Glance 2014 About the University The University of Pretoria was established in 1908 as the Pretoria branch of the Transvaal University College. The College became a fully-fledged university in 1930. The University s colloquial name Tuks, or Tukkies, was derived from the acronym TUC for the Transvaal University College. UP's current facilities portfolio consists of more than 790 buildings and structures spread over 33 sites located on six campuses that cover 1 100 hectares of land. In the 106 years of existence the University has produced more than 230 000 alumni. 9 Faculties and a business school 230 Qualifications 141 Academic departments 166 Undergraduate programmes 100 Centres, institutes and bureaux 1 047 Postgraduate programmes Key facts Student headcount enrolments increased from 44 670 in 2011 (excluding distance education) to 48 043 in 2014, registering an annual growth rate of 2.5%. The percentage of black undergraduate and postgraduate contact students increased from 43.4% and 52.1% in 2011 to 48.2% and 55.3% in 2014, respectively. The percentage of international contact students increased from 8.2% in 2011 to 9.0% in 2014. The number of graduates in science, engineering and technology (SET) fields increased from 3818 in 2011 to 4365 in 2013, registering an annual growth rate in graduates of 6.9%.
