Exams: College of the Canyons Exams will be primarily problem oriented and may include objective and or subjective questions. Every effort should be made to avoid missing an exam, as there are NO MAKE-UPS. If an exam is missed, it will be given a score of zero (0). Under an extenuating circumstance and its support, with an appropriate documentation, an opportunity for a make-up exam might be granted. (Note to the online students: Exams will be available seventytwo (72) hours ahead of deadline. You can take the exam ahead of time, but not after its deadline. In addition, it is a good idea to get to know other students, for study groups and exchange of ideas. The course moves very rapidly; we will cover three to four chapters per week. In order to keep up, you must work on these materials every day. I will assume that, with the exception of the first session, you will have read the chapters as they are scheduled. The reviews at the end of the chapters are a good preview for the chapter. If you miss a deadline, you are still held responsible for the materials and assignments of the missed session(s). The best way to prevent missing any deadline is to be on the top of the course schedule and its related deadlines. Contents will be available ahead of time, but will disappear on the deadline. Homework and Participations: You should submit your assignments via the Canvas. There are 2 to 3 questions per chapter from end of each chapter. Homework will not be returned. You can check your grade on Canvas. In addition, you should participate on a weekly or daily basis in Discussions section of the Canvas. There are 4 to 5 questions per chapter. These questions are available ahead of time. However, after end of the segment they will not be available. You can post your responses ahead of time but no later than the deadline. We will cover 3 to 4 chapters every week. Attendance: Due to the nature of this course, regular participation is crucial for successful completion. Students must participate on a regular basis in class activities. Go over the Power Point Presentations; and chapters summary, participate in the class discussions and post those to Discussion section of Canvas. Course Objectives This course introduces students to an overview of the fundamentals of the functioning of the business in our social and economic system. At the end of the course, the students will be able to: 1. Analyze specific ways in which the U.S. government affects, restricts, and protects businesses. 2. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages for each form of business organization, such as sole proprietorships versus partnerships versus corporations. 3. Analyze the ethical consequences of business decisions, and design ways to demonstrate ethical commitment, social responsibility, and environmentally sustainable business strategies. 4. Compare and contrast the primary types of economic systems, such as planned economies versus market economies. 5. Debate globalization issues for a business, such as the choice of international organizational structures, with attention to legal, social, cultural concerns, and interdependence of financial markets. 6. Compare and contrast the key management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. 7. Identify current production and operations processes concerns in an operations case, such as capacity and layout planning, and address sustainability issues. 8. Differentiate key human resource management functions and laws affecting employees. 9. Identify the marketing mix and key tools, terms and strategies related to each element.
