With the ability to have effective coaching conversations, leaders can guide others to develop as leaders, solve problems, create opportunities and improve performance. This is an experiential course that provides students with an opportunity to learn and practice the art of conducting effective coaching conversations that can be applied to numerous workplace situations. This course begins with training students to have effective coaching conversations. Early in the quarter, Northwestern s Center for Leadership will assign Kellogg students two to three undergraduate or graduate students in leadership roles (e.g., student government, fraternity/sorority leaders, club leaders, sports team captains, etc.). Throughout the quarter, Kellogg students will apply their newly acquired coaching skills to their assigned NU students as they face actual leadership and life challenges in real time. Kellogg students will also meet with instructors three times during the quarter in small groups to address questions and refine their skills in Practicum Labs. This experience is intended to provide Kellogg MBA students with an opportunity to increase confidence in their interpersonal communication skills and deepen their insights about leadership. This course is beneficial for students who will assume leadership roles in organizations, have significant people interfacing facing roles (e.g., consulting, product management, team-based work, human resources, executive coaching and/or talent management, etc.), and/or who will engage in mentoring others. Prerequisite: MORS 430-0. Course Goals Learn and practice key interpersonal communications skills that comprise an effective coaching conversation. Experience how the coach approach is an impactful way to guide others in developing as leaders, solve problems, create opportunities and improve performance. Deepen insights about leadership. An instructor or experienced coach will observe and provide feedback for each group once during the quarter. Individual 1x1 Coaching Sessions with Instructors (by appointment) Practicum Coaching with NU Students Plus Outside Person: Kellogg students will coach their 2 assigned NU student leaders. Kellogg students should plan on meeting with each of their student leaders at least 4x throughout the quarter for approximately 1 hour for each meeting. Kellogg students will manage their own appointments with NU students. In addition, students are expected have 4 coaching conversations with one or more people outside of class. It can be the same person or up to four different people not currently enrolled in the course. Practicum Labs: Three times during the quarter, Kellogg students must meet with one of the instructors in small a small group (6-8 Kellogg students) to discuss their coaching experiences with NU undergraduates and gain further guidance on their coaching skills. This is a skills-based course so the more you practice, the more you ll improve. The chart above is the minimum requirements. It is encouraged that you practice beyond these requirements with as many different coachees as possible to gain increased skill proficiency. 5-10 Points will be deducted from your grade for not meeting these requirements per instructors discretion. You will be asked to keep a log of your coaching hours during the practicum labs. Make Up Assignment If you miss a class during the first four weeks of the quarter, you have the opportunity to do a make-up assignment. Make Up Assignment is worth 4 points Due on or before two weeks after missed class. You will receive credit for the class you missed on Canvas.
