The Mathematics Department Our Mathematics Department is a vibrant learning environment with large numbers of students studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics in sixth form, and a wide range of extension and enrichment opportunities throughout the key stages. We work hard to ensure that all students enjoy their mathematics and appreciate the creativity and beauty inherent within the subject, as well as its power to develop their problem solving skills. The department currently consists of ten fully qualified mathematics teachers, including the Head of Department, a Head of KS3 Maths and a Head of KS5 maths. We have the expertise to teach all levels of mathematics and we are fortunate that we have extensive experience of all aspects of further Mathematics and Oxbridge preparation within the department. Our results over the last 10 years have been outstanding and in 2017 we gained 32% grade 9s at GCSE, and 72% grade 9-7. At A level we achieved 77% A*/B at A level in 2017 (93 students). In 2018 we have 120 students studying Maths and Further Maths in year 13. We are a Teaching School so regularly have trainees in the department and our proud of record of producing welltrained, successful teachers. There would be the opportunity for the Head of Maths to become a Senior Leader in Education, contributing to the support of other schools in Buckinghamshire. They will be an outstanding teacher in their own right and committed to further developing our Year 7-13 curriculum. The position offers an exciting opportunity for someone looking to progress their career in school leadership and lead Mathematics in a large school. The successful candidate must be able to teach A Level Mathematics. The ability to teacher Further Mathematics would be desirable. They should have strong interpersonal and communications skills, a proven track record of leadership of Mathematics and be able to demonstrate successful results/value added from their own classes. The successful candidate will have the desire for Mathematics to continue to be a high profile subject in the school and a clear vision of how the subject and department can be the best amongst similar schools locally, and contribute nationally. Accountable to: The Head of Mathematics is directly responsible to and supervised by the Assistant Head in charge of Mathematics and Computing. However, the Head of Mathematics may also receive instructions from the Head, who is responsible for the leadership and management of the school and reports to the Local Board of Governors. Responsible for: Teachers of Mathematics, trainee teachers of Mathematics (when applicable), the Head of KS3 maths and the Head of KS5 maths. Overall Purpose of the Job:

The Head of Mathematics primary purpose is to lead the Mathematics Department, and to work as part of a team to help achieve the overall aims of the school. The ability to teach Mathematics to the highest level at GCSE and A level is essential and the ability or potential to teach Further Mathematics is desirable. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Being responsible for maintaining and developing teaching and learning standards in the department including conducting learning walks, sharing best practice and supporting staff during lessons when appropriate. Managing the colleagues in the department, setting suitable targets in performance management and delegating appropriately to the heads of key stage within the mathematics department. Being responsible for promoting best practice in managing Behaviour for Learning in the Mathematics Department and supporting staff as appropriate. Developing and maintaining effective methods of communication to parents and responding to queries in a sensitive and positive way. Creating an effective team by promoting collective approaches to problem-solving and curricular/departmental and cross-curricular developments through development planning and resources. Chairing and producing agendas and minutes for effective department meetings, informing relevant members of staff about discussions and decisions. Implementing school assessment and target -setting policies and monitoring and evaluating achievement and attainment of pupils. Leading and contributing to the production, review and revision of the department schemes of work. Preparing work for absent departmental colleagues who have been unable to do so. Attending Heads of Department meetings and Middle Leader Training. Managing departmental stock, resources and finances effectively and efficiently. Overseeing and monitoring public examination entries and in conjunction with the Examinations Officer. Leading the Department in preparing students for university selection interview Providing suitable tests and marking late entry applications Assisting in enhancing the professional development and aspirations of colleagues. Keeping up-to-date with developments and new ideas related to the subject. Ensuring the Department maintains a vibrant, stimulating Learning Environment Ensuring appropriate extension and enrichment activities take place in the department, for example UKMT maths challenge, educational visits, arranging speakers, taking students to competitions. Marketing the mathematics department to prospective parents and students by organising the Open Evening and Sixth form Open Evening activities. Marketing the department to parents by passing on articles to the newsletter and annual publication. Teaching Duties:

20 periods a week teaching standard classes (this includes an allowance for Head of Mathematics Department). Planning schemes of work linked to specifications, preparation of lessons, setting homework and marking pupils work. Informally assessing and reporting pupils academic development, progress and attitude in line with the school s systems. Making formal assessments, setting and marking examination papers and writing reports, as required. This also includes late transfer entry testing. Taking responsibility for the welfare and safety of pupils. Promoting the general well-being of pupils, taking note of individuals personal needs and communicating with the Form Tutor and/or Head of Key Stage. Maintaining discipline and high standards of courtesy and appearance among pupils at all times and cooperating in this with all other members of staff. Taking care to see that the teaching room is a well-ordered and stimulating environment for learning. Attending Parents Evenings and any other occasion sanctioned by the school, e.g. Options Evenings, New Parents Evening, Open Days, Speech Day, Achievement Assemblies, etc. Covering, as required, for absent colleagues. Periodically reviewing teaching methods; maintaining knowledge of the subject and expertise up to date; participating in arrangements for Performance Management, further training and professional development.
