(Credits: 3) 1. Explicate the interplay between mission, vision, values, strategies, and policies in domestic and international management with consideration for social and ethical implications. 2. Utilize analytic tools to examine and evaluate the external environment of organizations. 3. Apply organizational assessment tools in diagnosing internal operational challenges and opportunities. 4. Differentiate the advantages and disadvantages of various strategic approaches and options at the business-unit and corporate levels. 5. Develop multiple strategic alternatives, taking into consideration environmental and organizational factors. 6. Develop implementation plans for strategic options that align with organizational mission, vision, and values. BUS 2101, ECN 2801, BUS 3010 and admission to the MBA degree program or other graduate programs. You and your classmates will be conducting a strategic analysis for an actual organization in the community. As individuals, you will be examining issues related to finances, economics, strategic alliances, etc. Specifically, you will be completing an environmental analysis, industry analysis, internal analysis

Dr. Dobbs MBA 5000 Strategic Management 2 (including core competence), evaluation of strategic alternatives using a weighted SWOT matrix, and implementation plans. Each week we will cover parts of these analyses and templates will be provided for you to follow to provide structure for your project. In addition, workshop time will be provided to work with the professor directly and additional assistance will be available through the course Graduate Assistant. Near the end of the semester, you will present your findings to the class via a professional PowerPoint presentation at which time the final project will be submitted. It should be extraordinarily professional in nature representing the quality of work expected of MBA students at Eastern. Fonts, margins, style, color scheme, etc. should be uniform throughout. Graphics should all be original when possible and uniformly produced. Grammar and syntax should be correct. More detailed expectations will be provided later. Teaching Philosophy Research has demonstrated three specific benefits to business education. 1) The continuing development of studying and learning in college that is beneficial for the rest of your life. 2) The learning of business terminology or jargon. 3) The acquisition of practical skills. The course is designed to accomplish all three of these benefits for you. A typical class night will involve some lecture explaining concepts and theory, some case work and practice with templates, and some time to work on your project with the assistance of your professor and classmates. At the end of the course, you will not only know how to use the templates provided, you will be free to take them with you and use them in your jobs (many of my students have done this, while some email me a few years later because they don t have copies anymore). Evaluation & Grading Quizzes (100 Points) You will be given various reading assignments during the semester and for each one there will be a quiz. There will be 10 quiz grades worth 10 points each for a total of 100 points. Quizzes will be available on the course website at the end of the class period assigned and will remain open until the next class period begins (you will not be able to get ahead with the quizzes). Quizzes have no time limit and are designed as open book assessments. However, you are not to utilize a classmate or anyone else to assist you in taking quizzes. There are safeguards in place to discourage academic dishonesty, but violations of academic integrity are still possible and if discovered will be handled in accordance with this syllabus and university policy. In the case of technical difficulties, please email me with details as soon as problems occur. Waiting until later in the term will not be sufficient. EIU online outages are possible, so plan to take your quizzes early rather than right before class. An outage of EIU online immediately before class may not be considered sufficient to warrant an extension.

Dr. Dobbs MBA 5000 Strategic Management 3 Novel Reflections (105 Points) We will be reading the short novel What I Didn t Learn in Business School: How Strategy Works in the Real World (WIDLIBS). Each week you will be responsible for reading a chapter and answering the corresponding reflection questions included in the book (15 readings at 7 points each). Responses should be a minimum of 100 words and can be in response to any or all of the questions. Responses will be submitted through Dropbox on the course D2L site. Exams (300 Points) There will be two exams in the course: a midterm exam and a final exam. Both will cover the theoretical and practical materials covered in the course. Although the format for both will be multiple choice, both will include questions that require you to know how to use the templates utilized for your projects. Each exam will count 150 points (300 points total for the exams). Project Presentation (100 Points) As mentioned above, you will be using templates to produce your strategic recommendations for your external client organization. Each student will present his/her project findings to the rest of the class. A more detailed description of the guidelines for the presentation will be provided later in the semester. The presentation will count 100 points toward your course grade and will in part be derived from evaluations of other students presentations. Presentation order will be determined Nov. 19 th. Student preferences will be solicited for presentation slotting and granted in order of the highest course grades at that point in the course. Project Portfolio (400 Points) On the day you present your findings to the class (see next item), you will turn in (when you present) your project in a 3-ring binder of appropriate size. This portfolio is worth 400 points and is the largest single portion of your course grade. Portfolios turned in late will be assessed a 10% penalty per day late (each 24 hour period beginning at 7:00 p.m.). Dr. Dobbs MBA 5000 Strategic Management 4 Attendance Students are expected to attend class meetings as scheduled. When an absence does occur, the student is responsible for the material covered during the absence. When possible, the student should notify the instructor in advance of an anticipated absence. Lecture and class notes will not be made available to students who are absent (for reasons other than those outlined above) and are not posted on the course website. Make-up privileges will be provided to students for properly verified absences due to illness, emergency, participation in an official University activity, or participation in volunteer emergency work. It is the student's responsibility to initiate plans for make-up work before the class is missed and to complete it promptly. If in the instructor's judgment the duration or number of such absences renders make-up unfeasible, the instructor may contact the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Department Chairperson to determine an appropriate action. Inclement Weather Academic Integrity The University remains open for academic classes and all other services during inclement weather except in extreme circumstances determined solely by the president of the university. Regional and local news media will publicize the closing. In such cases, scheduled activities will take place the next available class meeting. For example, if an assignment is due on a Wednesday but the university is closed, that assignment will be due on the next class day the university is open. If an exam is scheduled for a day the university is closed, it will be administered the next available day. Clarifications will ordinarily be posted on the course web site on inclement weather days. In cases in which the university is open, but students are unable to attend class due to weather, students should contact the professor BEFORE class to make arrangements for make-up work on a case by case basis. Students are expected to be above reproach in all their scholastic activities. If students engage in scholastic dishonesty, they will be subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course, suspension from the university, or expulsion from the university as defined in EIU s Code of Conduct (http://www.eiu.edu/judicial/studentconductcode.php). Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student, or the attempt to commit such acts. To encourage original and authentic written work, students may be required to submit their written assignments in this course for review to Turnitin.com, or other systems designed to detect plagiarized material, and those assignments will become a searchable document with the Turnitin (or other system s) database. Since scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students, and the integrity of the university, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.

Dr. Dobbs MBA 5000 Strategic Management 5 Technology Use Cellphones: The use of cellphones, pagers, PDAs, or similar communication devices (henceforth referenced as cellphones) during scheduled classes and examinations is prohibited. All such devices must be stowed completely out of sight and on silent (or non-disruptive vibrate). Cellphones are not to be used with the exceptions of emergencies as noted below. If cellphones are seen or heard by the instructor, observers, or graduate assistants, the following actions will be warranted and recorded: 1st offense: Student will be asked to stow or silence cellphone. 2nd offense: Student will be asked to leave class for the rest of class time with no opportunity to make up missed work or notes. 3rd offense: 2nd offense discipline + a replacement of highest quiz score with a zero. 4th offense: 2nd offense discipline + 2 additional quiz replacements of zero. 5th offense: 2nd offense discipline + 5 additional quiz replacements of zero. 6th offense: 2nd offense discipline + 10 additional quiz replacements of zero. 7th offense: 2nd offense discipline + a replacement of highest exam score with a zero. (A 7th offense, therefore, results in failure of the course due to extreme unprofessionalism, creation of a hostile learning environment, and chronic insubordination.) Cellphone Emergency Exceptions: If a student is expecting an emergency call, text, or other communication (e.g., a family member has a health crisis, there is a sick child at home, etc.), the student should notify the instructor prior to the beginning of class. If cellphone communication is needed, the student should exit/reenter the class as discreetly as possible. If a student receives a series of communications (e.g., someone keeps calling over and over, 911 text, etc.) and suspects there is an emergency, s/he may discreetly leave class to check his/her cellphone. The EIU Alert system will alert multiple students, the instructor, and the computer in the classroom in case of a campus-wide emergency. Students, therefore, will all be aware of such instances collectively and do not need to be concerned about individually monitoring cellphones for this possibility. Laptops: Students may apply (application form available on course website) to use laptop, tablet, or other portable computing devices during class to take notes, access templates, or conduct research at the direction of the professor. Otherwise accessing the Internet, sending and receiving emails, etc. is not acceptable. Students who abuse the laptop privilege will be asked to keep their laptops stowed during class with additional penalties as outlined on the laptop use application form. Laptops may not be used during examinations.

Dr. Dobbs MBA 5000 Strategic Management 6 Calculators: Only basic function calculators may be used on examinations. Graphical calculators or calculators that are built into electronic devices such as notebook computers, cell phones or PDAs will not be allowed during exams. Calculators with alpha capability will not be permitted in the room during examinations. Professionalism Disabilities Students are expected to demonstrate professional conduct in class. Students who engage in unprofessional behavior (such as tardiness, sleeping, reading non-class materials, talking, text messaging, misuse of technology, inappropriate attire, etc.) may be asked to leave the classroom and/or have points deducted from course grades.
