Boundary Revision Process School Board Directed Purpose Populate Salish Middle School for the Fall of 2016. Populate a K-5 elementary school at the current Aspire Middle School campus for the Fall of 2017 Do so based on priorities set by the School Board 6

What the Committee struggled with How best to plan for growth: Based on what? Where? What to do with Lacey: Where should Lacey go to middle school? Decrease the load on Komachin: How? Continuity? Increase the load on Meadows: From where? Decrease the load on Olympic View: To where? Fill Salish: From where? Military family student impact: Impact? How many? Where? Walk zones: Keep as many as possible. What if not possible? Where? 10

The Committee s biggest challenge The thumb 200 plus students reside in the thumb Need to decrease the load on Komachin no room for added growth due to 6 th grade transition Unique location of Komachin relative to the students they serve top corner Step 1: Woodland sent to Nisqually not enough load reduction Transportation route (current) from Schilter Farm to Mountain View is 13 mins. To Chinook adds 5 to 7 minutes. Approx 20 minutes one way. Coupled with goal to end splits no partial moves. Board priority #2 Send Mountain View in total to Chinook Committee struggled with this solution to the very end 12
The Committee s biggest challenge Keeping the thumb in Komachin and Timberline caused the following: Projected Enrollment Timberline increase in enrollment - to approx 1614 1457 North Thurston decrease in enrollment - to approx 1247 1404 Komachin increase in enrollment to approx 746 626 Chinook decrease in enrollment to approx 589 709 This is in direct conflict with the School Board #1 priority balance school size by levels. 13

High School Phasing Plan Fall 2016 High Schools North Thurston, Timberline and River Ridge: Freshmen to Juniors: Guaranteed Waiver Status No transportation will be provided for waiver students Current 8 th graders will go to the new boundary high schools Siblings of HS students will receive priority status as indicated in the current transfer policy although not guaranteed 30
Middle School Phasing Plan Fall 2016 Middle Schools Chinook, Nisqually, Komachin and Salish: Guaranteed waivers not available to any MS student Students go to the home attendance area middle school per the new revised boundary changes Current waiver process would still be followed and available to all students No transportation will be provided for waiver students 31
