Date: 21 st November 2014 Report on Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti and Swachha Bharat Abhiyan at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited Swachha Bharat Abhiyan was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm on the auspicious occasion of 145th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. in its offices and establishments all over the country on 2 nd October, 2014. Launch of this grand movement was highly welcomed by the employees of BHEL across the whole corporation who overwhelmingly participated in the celebrations and pledged to carry forward this noble national initiative in right earnest. At BHEL Corporate Office Delhi, Chairman and Managing Director, Shri B. Prasada Rao along with Director (Finance) Shri P K Bajpai, Director (HR) Shri R. Krishnan, Director (Power), Shri Atul Sobti and officials/employees present paid homage to Gandhiji. The whole aura carried a fragrance of love and gratitude for our country and Mother Earth. The Banners for Swachh Bharat were displayed at the entrances of the building as well as the centre of the main hall and the Swachh Bharat message flashed on the main hall television. Addressing employees, CMD emphasized upon the need to maintain cleanliness at our homes, surroundings, workplaces and in public places. He described this mission as a continuous process and appealed to the gathering to carry forward this noble movement in accordance with the message of Gandhiji, i.e. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, with a view to enlighten the heart of millions of our country men by ensuring a cleaner and healthy environment. He exhorted all employees to devote at least two hours a week towards cleanliness activities. The celebration began at 09.45 A.M. with CMD, Shri Prasada Rao administering the Swachhta Shapath from Hon ble Prime Minister of India to employees and school children gathered on the occasion in Hindi as well as in English. Concluding his address, CMD appealed to the employees to start constructively contributing towards the mission by cleaning their respective workplaces.
After the pledge-taking ceremony, Swachhta Abhiyan was formally launched by CMD. Led by CMD, Directors and officials/employees of BHEL cleaned the area outside the BHEL Corporate Office premises. Followed by CMD, Directors, senior officials and employees also cleaned their respective workplaces as well as the areas outside their workplaces. CMD, Director (HR) and Director (Power) also took a round of the office premises, made observations regarding the efforts made in the direction of improving cleanliness and advised employees to take this movement as a genuine opportunity to beautify our country, starting by beautifying our workplaces. Extending full support to the campaign, BHEL Delhi-based Sports enthusiasts participated in a Walkathon event at Raj Path during the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission by Hon ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. They committed themselves to become the ambassadors of Swachh Bharat Mission in their respective units / functions and sustain the feeling of ownership of the campaign amongst fellow employees. On this occasion, slogan writing competition and painting competition was organized for school children at BHEL Delhi premises. Prizes were distributed to children for their creativity and to motivate them to hold their spirits high so that they are always alive to their responsibility towards the nation in spreading the message of Swachha Bharat. Gifts were also distributed to the workers as a token of appreciation for playing an important role in ensuring cleanliness at the workplace. Similar functions were organized at all Units, Regions, Sites and Townships of BHEL across India. Swachhta Shapath was taken in more than 50 locations of BHEL in Hindi, English and regional languages, by BHEL employees, township residents and contract workers who pledged to contribute their part in keeping the BHEL premises clean. Activities organized at a few units of BHEL are as follows: BHEL Bhopal: Executive Director, after administering Swachhta Shapath to the employees, he called upon them to holistically follow what they have pledged. After cleaning the Bhopal Factory premises, the employees cleared the garbage lying near the blocks/offices. BHEL Township Administration supported by the township residents, cleaned Piplani area near Shastri Market which had become a dumping
ground for garbage. After demolishing some dilapidated structures, the entire area was cleaned and converted into a park. More than 1000 saplings were planted and the area was renamed as Shastri Park. On the auspicious occasion of 2nd October, the park was inaugurated by Executive Director, BHEL Bhopal and was opened for public. At Shastri Market, toilets were renovated and opened for public use. Many other cleanliness drives were organized along with Hospital staff, Trade Unions and Associations, Jawaharlal Nehru school, Vikram School and Kasturba College of Nursing, Habibganj. BHEL Haridwar: As part of this noble campaign, the Executive Director initiated the cleaning activities under the banner of "Swacch BHEL - Swacch Bharat". Multi-utility saplings were planted at the community center by CSR department officials of the unit. Members of the BHEL Ladies Club also joined in the cleaning drive. The shopkeepers too joined in the initiative cleaning the shopping centre complex at Sector 1. BHEL, Corporate R&D, Hyderabad: Swachhta Shapath was administered by ED (R&D) in English, by GM (PEC, HR) in Hindi and by GM (TEM & PMS) in Telugu. After the pledge, the staff led by ED (R&D) enthusiastically cleaned their work places and surrounding roads. Thick bushes and wild grass grown in the campus was cut. Special scrubbing of toilets with hot water process was taken up. Cleaning of Medical Centre, Projects Office, Guest House, Creche and Play Grounds was taken up at the Township Complex. Special dust bins for disposal of Bio-Medical waste were created separately at the Medical Centre. Power Sector Southern Region, Chennai - The campaign was launched on 2nd October 2014 at all Sites, Service After Sales, Head Quarters which included pledgetaking by the employees, cleaning of offices, shop floors, driver cabins, water drains, nearby roads etc. Debris, papers and garbage were removed and the workplaces
decorated. Emphasis was on the 5- S concept & importance of systematic approach in all areas of work both at office & home. Office areas were painted and repair work done, which brought a major change in appearance of the premises. Exclusive webpage for Swachh Bharat was created in PSSR Web portal to create awareness and monitor the progress by uploading all photographs related to campaign. In all the BHEL locations, wholehearted efforts were made for sensitization towards Swachh Bharat Mission. Top management mobilized the employees and inculcated the "3As" - Awareness, Action and Accountability into them to play their part both in cleaning up and sustaining cleanliness at BHEL and around. To convey the overwhelming reverence and connectedness to our beloved Nation, National Anthem was sung. Rallies by school children in the villages nearby BHEL locations were organized. Workplaces, premises and neighborhood areas were cleaned up and huge numbers of saplings were planted. Various cleanliness competitions were organized and launched as long term initiatives to keep the motivation levels going. Surrounding residents, hospitals and schools supported BHEL in this noble mission (Reports from all the individual units / regions / locations of BHEL are annexed). BHEL along with rest of our country celebrated the Jayanti of Bapu, spreading the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, re-establishing and re-strengthening India s ancient tradition and philosophy. The spirit of togetherness was celebrated in its true sense as all over the country people joined hands, overcoming all kinds of differences of caste, religion, age etc., which sent out vibrations of unity and belongingness. Post launch of the campaign on 2 nd Oct 2014, all BHEL employees including the top management is leaving no stone unturned for its successful implementation. Area-wise cleanliness coordinators have been designated to maintain clean and hygienic working conditions within the BHEL premises. CMD and Directors are themselves reviewing the progress in this regard. In the initial phase, the thrust areas have been listed out which include weeding out of old records to make workstations presentable and ease storagespace constraint, proper stacking of records and files with indexing, proper clipping of wires/ cables, phasing out the old IT hardware and furniture, clear access and cleanliness
of passages and ensuring that employees spend two hours per week on cleaning their work places. Cleanliness success stories with photographs are also be uploaded on BHEL internet webpage for inspiring the employees and reinforcing the culture of cleanliness. The company is fully committed towards the cause of creating a clean India and will continue to improve the cleanliness in and around the premises. This small contribution of ours will bring a big change by not only providing a hygienic and healthy environment for everyone around, but also, more importantly, bring a shift in the mindsets of people, thereby taking the project further to the next level. BHEL, in its full capacity, will make sure that the campaign culminates into a key sustainable project, revamping the image of our Nation as Swachh Bharat Vatavaran evam vicharon se shudhh.
