Immerse yourself in experiential learning Spend the Summer in Florence studying art history with Los Angeles Pierce College and ACCENT. Florence becomes an extension of your classroom as you explore the city s cathedral, monuments, churches, museums, and galleries. Participants on the Summer in Florence program live in student apartments located throughout the city and have the opportunity to attend cultural events and optional social activities organized by the ACCENT Florence Center staff. The ACCENT Florence Center also provides support and guidance to students on each of its programs. Once you have applied and been accepted, you will receive more detailed application and enrollment forms as well as a student handbook. Student Services: The ACCENT Centers ACCENT is an independent study abroad program provider with a multinational team of staff members who all have personal experiences in study abroad. With more than 20 years of experience coordinating high-quality overseas study programs, ACCENT works in partnership with U.S. colleges and universities to develop academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study experiences in Paris, Florence, London, Madrid and Rome. Each city is home to a fully-staffed ACCENT Center that serves as a home base for program participants. The ACCENT San Francisco Center coordinates program enrollment and pre-departure preparation for students, helping to make their transition to living overseas as smooth as possible. The fully-staffed ACCENT Florence Center, located in the historic city center near the Piazza del Duomo, serves as a home base to program participants. The ACCENT Center is open during the week for students to access the resource and lending library, use the computer lab, ask questions, collect their mail and take advantage of a variety of other student services. Application and Enrollment The Summer in Florence program is open to students who are at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Program space is limited. Students should send in the enclosed application with the $250 non-refundable first payment as soon as possible to ACCENT. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, Los Angeles Pierce College and ACCENT will send you additional application and enrollment forms. Applications must be received by April 15, 2009. Beyond April 15, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits. Transferable Academic Credit The Summer in Florence program is offered for transferable college credit through Los Angeles Pierce College, part of the Los Angeles Community College District. Pierce College will provide a transcript, upon request, for the coursework completed overseas. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply. Cultural Program Cultural learning is an integral part of the Summer in Florence Program. Participants attend on-site lectures at museums and historical sites within and outside of Florence as well as attend one evening performance of Program Faculty Constance Moffatt received her Ph.D. in Art History from UCLA. Dr. Moffatt s interest in Italy began when she majored in history and then went on a study abroad tour to Perugia, Italy. She has published on Milanese court ritual, the Sforza rulers of Milan, and on architecture and Leonardo da Vinci. ballet, opera or classical music. Also included in the program are two one-day excursions to Siena/San Gimignano and Arezzo/ Sansepolcro with guide, transportation and entry costs, as well as a three-day, two-night excursion to Dr. Moffatt wants to give students the same great opportunity she had as a young student of the world. She has taught art and architectural history at Pierce College for 17 years. This will be her sixth trip with ACCENT and Pierce College in a summer abroad program. Venice including transportation, hotel stay and guided visits. An optional fourth-day/third-night in Venice is available as well ($90). Academic Curriculum Art 102: Art History Survey from Late Gothic to Modern (UC & CSU transferable) 3 units Excursions are chosen based on the academic curriculum and are subject to change. A survey of painting, sculpture, and architecture of the Western tradition from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first century. Attention is given to style, iconography, and the social, political, and economic context that accompanies a work of art. The payment schedule is the applicant's contractual obligation. Failure to make each payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availability of space and late enrollment fees. All prices and fees reflect exchange rates current as of 11/08 and are subject to change. ACCENT charges a $20 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course of business. Transportation All participants must check-in at the ACCENT Florence Center June 15, 2009 between 9am and 5pm (Note: most transatlantic flights depart one day before their arrival date). ACCENT will organize an optional round-trip group flight from Los Angeles. Airfare is not included in the program fee. Group flight participants will be met at the airport in Florence and transferred to their housing. Group flight participants returning to the U.S. on the group return date will receive transportation to the Florence airport. Students enrolled in the Summer in Florence Program will receive detailed optional group flight information approximately four months prior to departure. Estimated airfare $1700 - $1800. LAPC Tuition & Fees Academic credit for this program is awarded by Los Angeles Pierce College. A $20 per unit enrollment fee must be paid to Pierce College at the time of registration. Nonresidents of California pay $181 per unit ($191 international). Fees are set by the State of California and are subject to change. For more information, contact Constance Moffatt at 818.710.4365. Requirements for Study & Travel in Europe (visas) A visa is written permission to visit or temporarily reside in a country and is granted by the government of that country. A visa is inserted into your passport. All participants are required to apply for and obtain a study visa from the Italian Consulate prior to departure from the United States. Additional information on obtaining visas will be provided to participants after applications are received. Cancellations All cancellations must be made in writing to ACCENT and Los Angeles Pierce College and are effective the date of receipt by ACCENT. Participants are liable for payments until written cancellation is received. Travel, housing, meals and other logistical arrangements are provided by a contracting agency not affiliated with the Los Angeles Community College District. Participants will be required to sign a travel study request and release. Trip cancellation and baggage loss insurance are strongly recommended. The LACCD is not held responsible for losses due to lack of any insurance coverage. Student Housing Students may choose to live in double or single rooms in shared student apartments. Single rooms in shared apartments are limited, are not guaranteed, and require a supplement of $350. Apartments are located throughout Florence, within walking distance of or a bus ride from classes and the city center. Student apartments include shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. During the overnight excursions students will be in either double, triple or quad rooms in two star hotels. Housing is provided from the first day of the program (June 15, 2009).
