Healthy Living Club Challenge All 4-H Clubs are invited to join in the Race Across Iowa event, kicking off this November. Challenge Areas: Water Consumption - 75 miles Clubs take part in the challenge by introducing a variety of healthy living practices during club meetings each month. Completing the challenges earns the clubs miles as they race across Iowa throughout all 20 regions of the state. This 1,400 mile route destination sure fulfils the definition of a challenge, but by working together as a team and setting goals to incorporate healthy living practices each month, we hope to see you meet or surpass the final mile by the end of June! Fruits & Veggies - 100 miles Offer water as the main beverage at Club meetings Tips: How to incorporate water in a fun way. Include a fruit and/or vegetable as a snack choice Tip: Create opportunities to try new foods or recipes Infuse water naturally by adding fruit, vegetables, or herbs Offer new foods to try at club meetings Freeze 100% juice in ice cube trays to add fun flavors Invite a local farmer to visit the club and try their produce Physical Activity -125 miles Organize a physical activity to get moving for 10-15 minutes Tip: Activities that encourage movement with all participants Have a Club member lead group exercises, play a game, get moving during role call BONUS Challenges - be on the lookout! Every couple of months, a new bonus challenge will be revealed. These challenges will focus on other areas of wellbeing like building healthy relationships How to get involved: Step 1: Discuss Challenge at your Club meeting, vote to participate, and enter your Club here! Step 2: Get creative and have fun! Can your Club log more miles than the County Extension Office Ladies?? Step 3: Designate a Club Member or adult to submit the Club s progress each month by the 10th of the following month (November tracker due December 10). STEM Fest - November 4 Calling all 4 th - 8 th graders! The 2017 STEM Fest is coming up Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon. Registration starts at 8:30 am. There will be a public showcase at 2:30 pm for participants to display what they learned. Giddy Up - November 11 Get saddled up for some fun and join us Saturday, November 11th from 9:30 am - noon. Learn about horses, experience grooming and caring for them, and go on a trail ride with friends out at Camp Foster! If you have never ridden a horse before, here is your chance! Experienced riders welcome too! Space is limited, please call to register by November 9th. Cost is $15, snack included. Youth Council Meeting - November 19 The Youth Council will meet Sunday, November 19th at 2:15 PM. We will practice and set up for the Fall Awards Ceremony, discuss officer elections, and select an event to plan. Fall Awards - November 19 Join us for the 2017 Fall Awards Program at Corner Lanes Bowling Alley in Spirit Lake on Sunday, November 19 at 3:00 PM. The program will recognize youth for their record keeping abilities in project areas and as club officers. We will recognize club service projects and club leaders for their years of service. Special Honorary & Alumni Awards will be presented to supporters of our county 4-H program. Whether you applied for an award or not, please come to congratulate those being awarded and join the fun. The Dickinson County Youth Council is sponsoring 1 FREE line of bowling for youth. It s a great way to have fun and get to know members of other clubs! Seasons Greetings - December 9 As a 4-H Community we pledge our hands to larger service. Invite a friend and experience the fun of spreading joy to others. This Seasons Greetings event will take place on Saturday, December 9 from 1-3:30 pm in the Keelson Harbor Community Room. Together we will make crafts and cookies, some of the crafts and cookies will be taken over to the residents of Keelson Harbor. This is a FREE event, please call to register by Thursday, December 7 so there are enough cookies and snow globe supplies for everyone.

Beef Weigh-In - December 10 Babysitter Training - December 28 DICKINSON COUNTY EXTENSION Mark your calendars! Sunday December 10 is Market Beef Weigh-In. 1:00-3:00 PM County Fair Exhibit Only Calves Weigh 3:00-4:00 PM State Fair & Ak-Sar-Ben Calves Only market lead animals & market pens come to Weigh-In Breeding beef & feeder claves will be identified in 4H Online by May 15 Cost of ear tags is $1.50 each. Please plan to pay at Weigh-In. If you plan to ID animals for the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben, call us BEFORE DECEMBER 7 at 712-336-3488 as verification for State requires additional setup. If you are new to this project area, interested, or have any questions, please don t hesitate to call. The Babysitter s Training Program sponsored by ISU-Dickinson County Extension & Outreach and Dickinson County Public Health on Thursday, December 28 from 8AM - 3PM at the Extension Office provides a fun, interactive opportunity for youth to become a confident, responsible, sitter. Participants receive a bag to take with you when you babysit including a first aid kit, coloring book, and other supplies to equip you as a responsible and prepared babysitter! Cost for training is $15. Lunch and a snack are included. Space is limited, register today and submit payment to ISU Extension, 1600 15th St., Spirit Lake, IA 51301. Call or stop in the Office to register. Announcements Returning members, don t forget to re-enroll in 4H Online for the new 4-H year! Premium checks from the Dickinson County Fair and Clay County Fair are in! They may be picked up by families at the Extension Office or at the next Club Meeting. Club Leaders and 1 st year members receive the monthly newsletter by mail. Returning 4-H families receive the newsletter by email unless a mailed paper copy is requested.
