Confluence - 2015 at New Delhi Venue: Officer s Mess, Chief Engineer (Air Force), Palam, New Delhi Date & Time: 13.06.2015 at 6.00 PM An Interaction Programme (Confluence 2015) with the Alumni of CSE, ISM Dhanbad, was organized by the Computer Science and Engineering Society (CSES) of the Department of the Computer Science & Engineering, ISM Dhanbad on 13 June 2015 at Officer s Mess, Chief Engineer (Air Force), Palam, New Delhi. On behalf the department, Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar (Associate Professor & Head of the Department), Dr. Arup Kumar Pal (Assistant Professor) and 04 current students of B.Tech (CSE) have participated in this programme. One of the objectives of the program was to strengthen the Alumni base of the Department and bring them under the umbrella of CSE Society (CSES). The society firmly believes that the Alumni can contribute to the Department significantly to fulfill its ambitions. Details of Presentation and Discussion that took place during the event: Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar, Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering & President of Computer Science & Engineering welcomed all the Alumnus to Confluence - 2015.

He briefed them about the first alumni get together (Confluence 2014) held at Bengaluru on 13 June 2014 and also highlighted the decision taken during the event. He delivered a presentation on the academics, current infrastructure and other facilities of the Department which includes various laboratories, library, seminar hall, class rooms, JRF Halls and etc. (The presentation slides are enclosed for giving the clear picture about the discussion made during the event.) He stressed upon the need of strengthen the Alumni base of CSE and also stronger the bond that Alumni share with the society, which is lacking till now. He also ascertained that maintaining such a relationship would foster the growth of everyone - the current and prospective students, the Department as well as alumni. He quizzed what Alumni expected from the Department of CSE. Few replied, one raised that the Department should put more stress on practical-oriented teaching. Alumni listening to Dr. Kumar s Presentation Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar & Dr. Arup Kumar Pal responding to the queries raised by the alumni during informal session. He requested the alumni to help the department for providing Internship & Placement. He suggested both the options, either to convince their company to visit the campus for the intern hiring or the alumni as individuals provide the offline internship to at least one student per year. The student will remain at college or his/her home during the internship period. Stipends are not the issue. He also highlighted that 20 current CSE students are doing their internship at the department itself and working on Office Automation work of ISM. He requested the alumni, working in or running various startups, to kindly visit ISM and provide the opportunity to their juniors to work with them.

He came up with the idea to have CSE Ambassador in each company where alumni are working. This proposal is in line with the companies putting their ambassador at colleges like Google Ambassador, Microsoft Ambassador etc. The CSE Ambassador will be a single point of contact for all kind of communication with the company related to Internship, Placement, Talks, Contests, Sponsorship etc. Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar presenting the roles of Alumni for the department and also having need of CSE Ambassador in all companies. He requested the alumni to come forward and help the department in organizing events under the banner of CSE Society. He appreciated the effort made by CSE 2006 Batch and M/s Incresol for organizing 1 month coding contest (CodeMarathon). Rs. 1.15 Lakhs was contributed by them for the prize money and other operational charges. He also requested the alumni to contribute for the forthcoming 3 rd International Conference Recent Advances in Information Technology (RAIT-2016) (http://ismdhanbad.ac.in/noticeboard/conference/rait2016/index.html) which will be held during 03-05 March 2016. The contribution could be in the following ways: Deliver an Invited Talk Deliver a Tutorial Talk Attend as a Delegate (industry sponsor or self) Event Sponsors (like mementos, registration kit, high tea, dinner etc.) General Sponsor (Platinum/Diamond/Gold/Silver) He discussed about the presence of CSE department at International Level and informed alumni about the MoUs/Data Agreement signed with the following universities: University of Tunis & The Director of the National High Engineering School of Tunis (ENSIT) Botho University, Botswana Arkansas State University, USA University of Glasgow, UK (Data Agreement to access GOV2 Collection for text retrieval research) He made a request to alumni in help us in establishing more contacts with foreign universities and industries. He mentioned about the Annual Day celebration of the department and is being celebrated on last Saturday of August ever year. This year it will be on 29 th August 2015. He invited alumni to visit us during that event and interact and motivate the students. And also show the presence of Alumni base during this valuable day of the department.

The most important proposal came from Dr. Kumar is that one Alumnus should adopt a student or a batch and groom them throughout their academic life at ISM in whichever way they deem necessary. And he/she will act as Industry Mentor for the student/batch to give complete exposure about the industry. There were some suggestions from the Alumni reacting to Dr. Kumar s questions, compiled into following points: Measures should be taken to improve the coding skills of the students. (The CodeISM team is working hard to improve the coding skills of the students and even the results have started coming up.) Students should get an opportunity to work on some live projects. Alumni working at startup and running startup are ready to provide this opportunity to the students and work like their Industry Mentor. (CSE students have started working on live projects and more than 20 students are working on Office Automation of ISM.) Most of the companies are ready for 6 months internship instead of 2 months. And alumni are ready to provide such kind of information. (M.Tech students of the department can go for the 6 months internship and even the dual degree students have this option in their final semester.) Students should be exposed to the need of industry and they should know about the latest technology being used at the industry. Suggestion was make a change to the course curriculum accordingly. (It was felt that the basic teaching is mandatory and introducing the specialized should be the add-on. But all cannot be covered in the specific time slots. The better option is to utilize the Project slots for this required purpose. Alumni agreed to provide this mandatory requirement to the students during the week ends.) Ashish Ranjan (2014 Batch) and Loveneet Nigam (2011 Batch) interacting with Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar during the presentation. Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar has proposed to set up a Alumni Cell which comprise of following members HOD acting as President. One Alumni Representative acting to as Vice-President Two Faculty In-charge Two student representative from PG Three student representative from UG

He also mentioned that he could not identify Vice-President of this Alumni Cell and requested the Alumni to suggest one name preferably the senior alumnus of the department. Kindly note that a suggestion came from Alumni during Confluence-2014 at Bengaluru that the number of Alumni Representatives needs to be at least two. Moreover, they can be called Alumni Representatives instead of Vice-President. Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar presented the list of member (Lifetime & Anuual) of CSE Society. And the details are: Lifetime Members 05 Annual Member (2014-15) 30 Annual Member (2015-16) 06 He requested the alumni to become members of CSE Society and help the department as one of the member. The alumni accepted the proposal. The membership fees decided at Confluence 2014 would remain same: Rs. 1000/- (One Thousand) per year for Annual Member Rs. 10,000/- (Ten Thousand) once for Lifetime member Other than that, the key suggestion made by Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar and the Alumni, it was also observed that: There should be an Alumni Portal which would bring the current students and alumni under the same umbrella. Mr. Hind Kishore Geel (2015 Batch) presented a road map of the portal and agreed to provide the portal in the best possible way to start with. Such event serves in connecting alumni as well as planning and plotting a fruitful relationship. Confluence 2014 was fully organized by the CSE Society and this Confluence 2015 is organized jointly (contribution from CSE Society & Alumni). Confluence 2016 will be fully organized by Alumni. The date of Confluence 2016 is finalized as 11 June 2016 but the venue finalization will require some thoughts. It could be at Hyderabad or Pune or back to Bengalure. Alumni felt that, this is an excellent and heart touching event and opined that such events should be organized at regular interval of time. Finally, Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar and Dr. Arup Kumar Pal thanked everyone who extended their help and support to make Confluence 2015 a success, The Department believes that the event would grow in times to come and would contribute significantly towards the growth of CSE at ISM.
