Please read these notes carefully before completing your application form Furness College wishes to target the limited funds to students facing the most significant barriers to participation in education. Care will be taken to ensure that students have accessed other forms of financial support that is available to them. Each College / University designs its own bursary scheme, so what is offered at Furness will be different to other institutions. Furness College Bursary The Furness College Bursary is to enable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to study at University level. Successful applicants, who are awarded a bursary, will receive: Full-time students - a benefit of no less than 2,000 (max 1,000 cash, fee waiver of up to 1000). Part time an award for tuition fee waiver (studying a minimum of 25% intensity of the full time equivalent), and a cash benefit pro rata. A limited number of bursaries are available and will be awarded to those in the greatest need. This is a one year benefit, not a recurrent, annual entitlement. Criteria Students must: be studying on their first undergraduate course in 2017/18 be enrolled on an undergraduate course must not be directly continuing from one programme to another (eg FdA/FdSc onto a final year of an Honours programme) students who are fully funded by their employer are not eligible ordinarily be resident in England or the EU have declared household income of less than 25,000 (inc benefits). Payments will be withheld / withdrawn from students who do not comply or have outstanding referral/deferral work at the payment dates. Funds are limited therefore eligibility as per above does not guarantee success 3

Please Note Closing date for applications is Friday 20 th October 2017 4:00pm. Please use blue or black ink to complete this form. Write in CAPITALS. All relevant questions must be completed. Provide photocopies of documents requested. The declaration in section 9 must be signed. Awards for students ordinarily resident in England and on a full time course will be towards tuition fee costs and a maximum 1000 cash award. Awards for part-time students will be a pro-rata basis of a full-time equivalent. Payments will be released in 3 instalments dependent on attendance, behaviour and completion of assessments. Payments will made on: - 17 November 2017 (25%) - 9 February 2018 (25%) - 6 th July 2018 (50%). Any student found to have submitted a fraudulent application will be subject to action under the student disciplinary code. Receipt of a full grant through Student Finance England does not represent an entitlement to the Furness College Bursary. Awards will not be available to individuals who are ordinarily resident in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or Overseas (outside EU). The maintenance element of the Bursary award will not be available to students following a part time course or EU nationals. 4

Section 4: Independent or dependent status Students are classed as dependent unless one of the following applies: They have the care of a person under the age of 18 on the first day of the academic year which they re applying for support. They re 25 or over on the first day of the academic year which they re applying for support. They ve been married or in a civil partnership before the start of the academic year, even if they re now divorced or separated. They have no living parents. They ve supported themselves for at least three years before the start of their course. This includes any time they: - were in paid, full-time employment - received Income Support, Jobseeker s Allowance or other state benefits - received any pension, allowance or other benefit because of their disability or by any reason of confinement, sickness or illness - received training under any scheme for the unemployed or other funding by any state authority or agency Their parents can t be traced or it s not practical or possible to contact them. Their parents live outside the European Commission and an income assessment would put them in jeopardy, or it s not reasonably practical for them to send funds to the UK if a contribution were assessed (this may apply to a student who s a refugee). They ve not communicated with their parents for one year before the beginning of the academic year they re applying for support for, or they can demonstrate they re permanently estranged from their parents. Subject to certain exceptions, they were looked after by a local authority throughout any three month period ending on or after the date they turned 16, and before the first day of the first academic year of their course.
