Jack Goldstein Class of 1979 Jack Goldstein was a stand out two sport athlete during his time here at Valley Central excelling in both baseball and basketball. Jack was a member of a varsity basketball team that won back to back Orange County League Championships and a Section 9 Championship. Jack was the leading scorer on the team his senior year until he suffered a knee injury which sidelined him most of the season. Jack s coach called him one of the best pure shooters he has ever coached as well as an outstanding defensive player. His coaches and teammates recall Jack as an excellent teammate and leader. Jack later played four years of baseball while attending Iowa Wesleyan College where he received a B.A. in Business. Jack is currently the Vice President of Publishing Services for Gannett, which is one of the largest newspaper companies in America with 110 community newspapers and USA Today. Jack is grateful to have played with an outstanding group of athletes and friends and wanted to thank his coaches and parents for all of their support and wisdom.
Grant Boyd Class of 1980 Grant Boyd was a three sport varsity athlete at Valley Central, excelling in soccer, basketball and baseball. Grant was team captain of the varsity soccer, basketball and baseball team. As a member of the 1979-1980 Orange County Championship Basketball Team, Grant was chosen as Tournament Championship Co-MVP and Wallkill Basketball Tournament MVP earlier in the season. Grant was selected 1 st Team Tri-County All-Star Men s Basketball Team and was named 1979-1980 Valley Central High School Athlete of the Year. Grant was also chosen to participate in the Exceptional Senior Game for Soccer, Basketball and Baseball. Upon Graduation form Valley Central, Grant went on to play basketball at Paul Smith College and Florida International University where he was Captain on both teams. He was named MVP of the Paul Smith College Basketball Team and Athlete of the Year during the 1981-1982 season. At Florida International University in a game against Auburn University Grant was matched up against NBA great Charles Barkley. Grant s coaches have said that his leadership qualities are his most distinguished trait.
David Iorlano Class of 1987 David Iorlano was a three sport varsity athlete at Valley Central and one of only a handful of athletes to compete in two varsity sports in the same season. David was a member of the varsity football, soccer and baseball team and was captain of the varsity soccer and baseball team his senior year. He was the winner of the Les Geiger Award in Soccer in 1986 and Baseball Team MVP in 1987. After graduating form Valley Central, David went on to play Division 1 Baseball at Costal Carolina where he was the team s closing pitcher and set a school record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 24 1/3 innings in 16 relief appearances. David was Team MVP in 1991 and All American candidate in 1992. During his time at Costal Carolina, he was a member of a team that won 3 Big South Conference Championships and NCAA Regional Qualifier in 1991. David later coached the varsity baseball team at Arlington High School where he won two League Championships in 2003 and 2005. While coaching at Arlington, David had over 100 career wins and was named Dutchess County Coach of the Year in 2003.
Jason Peck Class of 2001 Jason Peck joins a long list of Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductees. Jason was a 4 time Section 9 Finalist losing to 3 eventual NYS Champions in those Section 9 Finals. Jason posted a high school record of 140-40 and is the winner of numerous tournament championships and Most Outstanding Wrestling Awards. Upon graduation, Jason went on to wrestle at S.U.N.Y. Cortland where compiled a record of 82-20 and was a 2 time All-American and placed 2 nd and 5 th in the NCAA Division 3 National Championships. Jason was also Cortland Head Coach Brad Bruhn s first All American. Jason wanted me to convey to all, how honored he is to have wrestled for such a great high school wrestling program. Having had the pleasure of coaching Jason myself, I can honestly say that in my 25 years of coaching (3 different sports), he is by far one of the hardest working, toughest, most well respected athletes I have ever coached.
Amanda Mandy Jenkins Class of 2003 Mandy Jenkins is one of Valley Central s most decorated track athletes is school history. As a five year Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Athlete, Mandy is the school record holder for the pole vault at 11 6 and 2002 Indoor Track and Field New York State Champion. Mandy also placed 2 nd in New York State Outdoor Championships in 2003. Upon Graduation, Mandy went on to Division 1 Mount St. Mary s University, MD where she was crowned Northeast Conference Champion in Indoor Track in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. She was also Northeast Conference Champion of Outdoor Track in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Mandy holds the pole vault school record at Mount St. Mary s University in both Indoor and Outdoor Track. As a NCAA East Regional Qualifier in 2004-2007 Mandy was also named Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and Academic All-American Second team in 2006 and First Team in 2007. Mandy now resides in Annapolis, MD with her husband Rory Quiller (Section 9 pole vaulter from O Neill HS and pole vault coach at US naval Academy) and one year old daughter Kira. Mandy also coached Track and Field at Wagner College from 2007-2009 while earning her M.S. in Microbiology. Mandy currently works as a Physician Assistant in the Emergency Department at Prince George s Hospital Center in Cheverly, MD.
The Coaches & Administrators
Robert Schoonmaker Robert Schoonmaker is a former Valley Central Elementary School Teacher, Principal and Director of Elementary Education for the Valley Central School District. Robert was instrumental in instituting several athletic programs that gave students opportunities to learn and improve their athletic skills before entering the middle and high school programs. As a member of the Walden Rotary Robert was able to obtain funding for both a 5 th and 6 th grade soccer league for boys and girls. Robert also started a wrestling program for 4 th, 5 th and 6 th grade boys that he supervised for over 20 years. He also founded the Walden Rotary Tournament that became one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the northeast. This tournament would draw wrestlers from five different states and host as many as 550 competitors. Along with the efforts of his wife Helen, Robert s reward for his efforts was the opportunity to watch his young wrestlers compete at the varsity level and win County, Sectional and State Championships. Robert and his wife Helen still attend VC sporting events and love when his former athletes and coaches welcome him with a hug.
