Future Ready Core ~ Breaking It Down for Topsail High students entering 9 th grade in 2009-2010 2010 or later Beginning with the freshman class of 2009-2010, North Carolina students must meet Future Ready Core graduation requirements. Under the Future-Ready Core Graduation Requirements, students must earn 13 elective credits (6 required by the state, 7 additional by Pender County Schools). This publication will address the breakdown of requirements of the 6 required by NC graduation requirements. The 7 electives required by Pender County Schools are electives of the student s choice. Two of these credits are to be from any combination of Career and Technical Education (CTE), Arts Education, and Second Languages. Students may take ANY combination of elective courses, as long as at least two of them fall under one or more of the identified categories. o one Arts Education course and one CTE course; o one Arts Education course and one Second Language course; o one CTE course and one Second Language course; o two Arts Education courses; o two Second Language courses; o or two CTE courses to meet this requirement. Language (Spanish) Courses page 29 (Available online through NCVPS is French, German, Latin, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese) Reminders for scheduling: 1. The UNC System requires two units of credit in Second Language for admittance into any of the NC colleges and universities in the system. 2. Please note that if a student registers for any North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) course, it will be scheduled for a full period and is part of their regularly scheduled school day. Career and Technical Concentration To qualify as a Career and Technical Education concentrator for graduation, students must earn four credits within one of the 10 Career Clusters available to Topsail High students. Students must select courses that work together to prepare them for careers or further education. Students choose at least three technical credits from the Foundational Courses within the Career Cluster. At least one of the Foundational technical credits must be at the completer level. Completer courses are identified with an asterisk (*) on the accompanying charts. Their fourth technical credit can be either a Foundational or an Enhancement course. Enhancement courses can be from any program area within the cluster. Note: Courses are not guaranteed to be offered. Course offerings are based on student demand and teacher availability. Arts Education Concentration To qualify as an Arts Education concentrator, students must earn four credits within one of the 4 Arts Education Clusters. JROTC Concentration In order for a student to qualify to receive the ROTC Concentration, the student must earn a minimum of 4 ROTC credits. Currently, Topsail High offers Army ROTC. The status of this program may vary from year to year as it is contingent on funding. Concentration in a Second Language In order for a student to qualify to receive a concentration in a second language, the student must earn a minimum of 4 credits in the same language. Currently, Spanish is the only language offered at Topsail High School. Other languages that are available for this pathway are offered online on NCVPS and they are French, German and Mandarin Chinese. Concentration in Advanced Placement In order for a student to qualify to receive a concentration in Advanced Placement, the student must earn a minimum of 4 credits in Advanced Placement. These courses cannot be courses that are being used to fill minimum core graduation requirements. Course offering vary year to year based on student demand and teacher availability. Courses that are available at Topsail High School for this concentrator are AP Psychology, AP US History, AP Human Geography, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus AB. Other courses available through NCVPS year long are AP Art History AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science A, AP German V, AP Government and Politics US, AP Mandarin Chinese V, AP Music Theory, and AP World History. College Connection Concentrator In order for a student to qualify to receive a concentration in College Connections, the student must earn a minimum of 4 credits in college courses. These courses are eligible for both college credit and 1 high school credit. Students are eligible to enroll in College Connections courses starting their junior year of high school and must be 16 years old by the first day of the semester. A variety of courses are available to Topsail High students and vary from year to year based on student demand and state funding guidelines. Currently, courses available are offered through various Cape Fear Community College s Gateway Program including Huskins, Concurrent Enrollment and Learn and Earn Online. Other courses may be offered through other community college Learn and Earn Online Programs or through UNCG ischool and can be found on pages 38-45 of your Pender County Schools Course Guide 2011-2012.
