Course Description: This course includes the properties of real numbers, factoring, solving and graphing linear equations, polynomials and rational algebraic expressions and linear systems of equations. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of MATH 020 Elementary Algebra, the student will be able to: identify an equation as linear, quadratic, or rational and solve the equation using an appropriate method. perform operations on and simplify polynomials, rational expressions, or radical expressions at an introductory level. perform factoring of polynomials construct the graph of a linear equation and identify its slope **Required Materials: 1) Textbook & MyMathLab Student Access (shrink-wrapped in the FC bookstore) * The textbook is Beginning Algebra, 12 th edition, written by Margaret Lial, John Hornsby, and Terry McGinnis. * The MyMathLab access is needed to access all assigned online homework 2) Math 20 Note Packet: These printed out notes will be available in the bookstore for a nominal fee 3) Computer with high-speed internet access 4) Other Materials: binder, lined paper, highlighter, pencils, eraser, notebook (suggested) Grades will be determined as follows: Grading Scale Percentage A: 90-100% Exams 1-4 (15% each) 60% B: 80-89.9% Online Homework 10% C: 70-79.9% Textbook Homework and Math Lab worksheets 10% D: 60-69.9% Final (comprehensive) 20% F: 0-59.9%

Online Homework: Online homework will be turned in using a program called MyMathLab (MyLab/Mastering). Details on how to register for MyMathLab will be given in class. You will be graded on the percentage of exercises that are answered correctly. You do not have to complete a section in one sitting. If you complete part of an assignment, you can save the work you have completed and return to the rest later, as long as the assignment is still available. You may also print out your homework if you prefer to work on it while not on the computer however, you will need to log in and input your answers on the computer prior to the homework deadline. The deadlines for each section of online homework can be found on the class calendar, or on the MyMathLab site. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS regarding the due date. The number values for each problem will remain the same unless you answer incorrectly 3 times. In this case, press the similar exercise button and attempt the new exercise. Problems should be worked out on lined paper and kept in your binder, or in a separate homework notebook for your own future reference. If you are having issues with your home computer, you may use the computers in the Fullerton College Math Lab or the 2200 computer lab. STUDENTS NOT REGISTERED FOR MYMATHLAB BY FEBRUARY 8 MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS Textbook Homework: In addition to the online homework, each section will have five problems assigned from the textbook. These will be collected in class, and need to follow the correct format for full credit. This includes proper labeling of sections and problems numbers, with this information being highlighted. If the assignment takes more than one sheet of paper, the papers need to be stapled together. Students should check their answers for ALL textbook homework problems in the back of the book PRIOR to turning in the assignments. (the answers to textbook problems are also found in the answer section of the online textbook, which starts at A-1) Math Lab Worksheets: Throughout the semester, Math Lab worksheets will be assigned. These are worksheets that are to be picked up, completed, and checked in the Math Lab. Worksheets must be turned in to the Math Lab on or prior to the due date to earn credit. Do not turn in Math Lab worksheets in class. When a Math Lab worksheet is announced as available, students will have one week to complete the worksheet. Late worksheets will not be accepted. Exams: Exams will be part multiple choice, and part free-response. For each exam, you will need to bring pencils, an eraser, and a Scantron (form 882 or 882E). The tentative exam dates are as follows: Exam 1: Thursday, February 25 (Ch 1-2) Exam 2: Thursday, March 17 (Ch 3-4) Exam 3: Tuesday, April 19 (Ch 5-6) Exam 4: Thursday, May 12 (Ch 7-8) Final Exam: Thursday, May 26 (Ch 1-9) *Any changes to these dates will be announced in class. It is each student s responsibility to become aware of any such changes.

Attendance: Students that miss the first day of class will be dropped. Also, students with any unexcused absences during the first 2 weeks of class will be dropped. Students that do not contact me with regards to absences in the first 2 weeks will be dropped. Also, please come to class on time; coming in late is disruptive to your fellow students. Students not in class when attendance is taken will be marked absent. If you arrive late, you need to talk to me at the break to be marked tardy. Each tardy or early departure will count as a half of an absence. Any student with four or more absences needs to contact me to avoid the possibility of being dropped from the course. However, it is each student s responsibility to drop if they choose to no longer participate. Make-up Policies: Online Homework: Online homework due dates are listed on the class calendar. Homework submitted by the due date will earn full credit. You will be able to submit late homework for 75% credit up until the night before the exam related to that section. After that date, no credit will be given. Your lowest four homework assignment scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Textbook Homework and Math Lab Worksheets: NO textbook homework or Math Lab Worksheets will be accepted after the due date, regardless of the circumstances. Since no make-ups are allowed, each student s lowest three scores in this category will be dropped. Exams: As a general policy, I do not allow make-up exams. If an emergency occurs on the day of an exam, be sure to contact me that day and I may allow you to make it up. Documentation verifying your situation may be required, and there may be a grade deduction, depending on the circumstances. Students needing to take an exam early may do so if arrangements are made with me well in advance (at least one week prior to desired test date). Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and there will be no opportunity for a make-up exam. Resources for extra help: My office hours feel free to come by during any of my scheduled office hours (No appointment necessary) FC Math Lab - The Fullerton College Math Lab is a free resource available to you to help you succeed in your math courses. During all open hours, tutors are available. There are also computers with MyMathLab and math videos. The Math Lab is located in room 807 of the LLRC. FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting.
