Social Studies 8 Course Outline Material Covered: The course is comprised of the following three themes covering the 7 th century to the year 1750: Theme 1: The Rise and Fall of Global Civilizations Medieval Japan India, Africa China The Islamic World Theme 3: Exploration, Discovery and Conquest European Renaissance The Age of Exploration Emergence of the Nation-State Theme 2: The Middle Ages to the Enlightenment European Empires and the Vikings The Church in Medieval Europe and the Crusades Europe and the Knights: The Late Middle Ages Textbook: Pathways: Civilizations Through Time ISBN 10: 0-13-675463-5 (Prentice-Hall) Other resources may be of use for various tasks. Several specific websites have been recommended at points of relevance in the course. You are encouraged to develop your research skills in this course, particularly in relation to projects, but research beyond the Pathways textbook is not included on your tests unless specified on the corresponding worksheet. Unit Assessment: For each unit you may choose to write a Unit Test or submit a Unit Project. If you choose the project you can choose from the list of topics on the worksheet or negotiate your own topic with your teacher.
