ARMADALE PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter No. 11 Excellence 26 April 2018 At Armadale Primary School we value Honesty Kindness Learning Respectfulness Dear Armadale Community Despite this being a shortened school week, we have managed to fill it up with wonderful events that highlight that Armadale Primary School is committed to partnering and promoting a sense of community. Leadership Tuesday morning started with a breakfast for our Year 6 leaders. They were presented with their badges and made their pledge to commit to doing and being their best as leaders. Presentations continued at assembly where we had the Mayor of the City of Stonnington, Steve Stefanopoulos, present certificates to the students who were part of the Tomorrow s Leaders for Sustainability team. Projects have been started and these students are excited about their role in shaping our future. Tuesday continued to be a day of community involvement as we welcomed two war veterans, Mike Fogarty and Jack Bell, to our school. The memories shared and the learning from their experiences inspired our Year 3/4 students to ask questions, and for many, to seek further information. Please take the time to read some of our student letters to Jack and Mike. These can be found in this newsletter on page 5. Address: Densham Road, Armadale 3143 School Phone: 03 9822 7003 Website: www.armadaleps.vic.edu.au OOSHC Phone: 03 9822 4912 Our School Leaders, Charlotte, Stella, Aidin and Tom, had the responsibility of delivering the Easter hampers to Very Special Kids. The students were accompanied by Bec Bond, Ray Skinner, Jodie Klijnsma and myself and proudly presented the hampers on behalf of the Armadale Primary School community. We all took the opportunity to speak with the staff and children at the centre and left knowing that there are people and organisations in our community who need our support and that we will commit to ensuring that our involvement in such wonderful endeavours continue. I was especially proud of Tom and Aidin, who came back to school, reflected on their visit and came up with some recommendations to improve on the ways in which we can continue to support Very Special Kids. As was pledged by our leaders at assembly, being a positive role model, being proactive on issues and problems and being a team player are key to what great leaders are and do. This is something that we value and aspire for all our students and I look forward to the year ahead because we have the capacity and support to do great things. Continuing the theme on leadership, the principal of Prahran Secondary School, Nathan Chisholm, will be visiting our school to speak with our Year 6 parents on Wednesday 2 May. The school has just launched their newsletter - PHS News, and the Prahran Facebook page. Subscription to this newsletter is highly recommended if this is a school you are considering for your children in the future. The Arts Performing Arts/Visual Arts/Media Years 3-6: Anzac Day Thanks to the combined efforts of the Year 3-6 students, and the rosemary donated by parents, the Anzac Day display in the main building beautifully complimented the poems written by students in Year 3 and Year 4. It also enhanced the experience of the veterans who visited the 3/4 students on Tuesday. Year 1: Painting Many of the experiences provided by The Arts encourage students to explore different materials, use a range of tools and develop their skills and techniques. As you will see in these paintings, students approach these experiences quite differently. My aim is to encourage students to take risks by creating, asking questions, reflecting upon their work and feeling confident about their endeavours. Some children often ask me, Do you like it? I might reply that I like how they explored using the different tools or comment on the new colour they created or the fantastic mark they made. This week at the end of the lesson, the students were asked 3 questions to reflect on: What went well? What did you learn? What are you wondering? These simple questions help students to think about their art experiences, clarify their ideas and articulate their thoughts to others. Senior Singing Group: The SSG will perform at the Mother s Day lunch on Friday 4 May. The students will be catching a public bus to the venue. A Compass alert will be sent out tomorrow with specific details. Please ensure you provide consent should you wish your child to perform at the event. Upcoming events: Year 2 and 3/4: The Sound of Music Performance at Lauriston Girls School (2/5) Please read your child s classroom bulletin as parent helpers are required to walk to and from the venue. Senior Singing Group: Performing at the Mother s Day Lunch (4/5) Year 5/6: Aboriginal Cultural talk - 'Walkin Country, Walkin Kooyong Koot' (7/5) Prep Year 4: Water, Water Everywhere Concert (24/5 and 25/5) Year 5/6: Excursion to Rippon Lea (29/5) Prep Year 6: Marimba Workshops with Jon Maddin: (4/6 7/6) Pippa Cocks The Arts Co-ordinator Page 3

Parents & Friends for Armadale (PFA) Hi everyone, Easter Hampers & Very Special Kids Congratulations again to the teachers and students of the top 3 hampers: 1 st Place 3/4J 2 nd Place 1Z 3 rd Place 5/6B Scholastic Book Club A very big thank to everyone for being so enthusiastic about our Easter Hamper fundraiser. From the students and teachers for their ideas and decorating skills creating the boxes, the families for their generous donations of goods, and the last minute dash to buy raffle tickets. There was a fantastic buzz as it all came together, and we managed to raise $860 for the school. I would like to say a very special thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who put up their hands to put the hampers together and sell raffle tickets. There are too many to mention here but please know your help is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Of course the remaining 13 hampers were donated to Very Special Kids. And as we had so many Easter eggs left over, we thought it would be a lovely treat to donate to the residents at Regis Aged Care, which they received with great pleasure. Please see Connie & the School Leaders report for details. Jodie Klijnsma & Debbie Zita Co-Presidents, PFA armadalepfa@gmail.com Sustainability News Orders for Issue 3 are due in Wednesday 2 nd May.
