Some of the growth in participation over the last few years is due to improved data collection. Graduate student data may underestimate actual numbers, especially for students engaging in research abroad. Some of this data has appeared in Open Doors, published yearly by the International Institute of Education (IIE). Comparisons with other institutions are from Open Doors. Figures will vary somewhat by chart based on information requested by IIE. For example, typically 25-50 UI students will attend more than one program abroad each year. They will be counted twice in enrollment (or registration) figures but only once in participation figures. The most recent published data from IIE is for the 2007-2008 academic year. Tables or charts based on data published by Open Doors will be indicated. (See: Open Doors 2008: Report on International Educational Exchange. New York: Institute of International Education. Also see: http:// opendoors.iienetwork.org.) 2 Expressed as a percentage of bachelor degrees awarded in the same year. Study Abroad Office University of Illinois 2
