Course Description: Students in College 111 will develop strategies that will assist them with TOPICS: WAOL introduction Attitude/Goal Setting Time/Money Management Learning Styles Test Anxiety Advising Tips Communication College Resources Motivation Test/Note Taking Tips for Top Grades How to Study Multiculturalism Choosing a Major Personality Types Memory Techniques Educational Planning Presentation Skills These skills will enable students to successfully manage their college and future careers. We encourage everyone to participate in class by sharing examples, asking relevant questions and engage in-group activities. Introduction: College 111 is TRIO sponsored and geared to help students become successful both during college and beyond. Students can anticipate spending approximately 12 hours per week (over a 10 week period) to successfully complete this class. 2 hours per week will be through WAOL s ANGEL as we learn to use how to use the online tools used in both Online and Hybrid classes. Turning in work: Work will be turned in as packets (a packet is a group of different assignments). All work is to be word processed (typed) and very clearly labeled. All work is to be kept in order to resubmit in a final professional portfolio. There will be 4 packets. No more than 2 packets will be accepted per day. No work will be graded unless the Assignment/Grade Sheet is attached. Students are responsible for turning in ALL work for a packet at the same time. Additional points will be lost for each assignment that is missing in a packet.

The Packet Grading Sheet, listing all assignments, is to be turned in with each packet. Please staple this in the front of your packet of work. Packets can be turned in and picked up in class. (allow 3-5 days turnaround time) Remember: The last day to turn in packet 4 and the final portfolio is on last day of instruction. See Pierce Calendar for date. www.pierce.ctc.edu/studentlife/calendars/academic No work will be accepted during finals week. Grading: No incompletes will be granted for this class. Students grade will be based on an accumulation of points earned in class and online using WAOL. Each completed packet turned in anytime before the due date will receive 10 extra credit points. Drop off at the TRiO front desk C301. TRiO is usually open M-TH 9-4:30pm and Fri. 9-1pm, but if no one is working in TRIO when you stop by, slide homework packet under door-c301h. Each packet turned in after the scheduled due date will have a deduction of 20 points. Each packet submitted with incomplete or missing work will have a deduction of 20 points. Packets with more than 25% of the work missing will not be accepted. PACKETS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED MORE THAN 7 DAYS PAST THEIR DUE DATES. 20 extra credit points will be given to students who have completed the whole course, including the portfolio 1 day before the portfolio is due. 200 points for in-class attendance/participation 200 (10 per day) 200 points for WAOL ANGEL participation 200 100 points for each packet (100 x 4) 400 100 points for final reflection paper/portfolio 100 Total possible 900 = 4.0, 765 = 3.0, 810 = 3.5, 675 = 2.0 ATTENDANCE: Attendance is critical since the subject matter covered in class is meant to augment the final portfolio and reflection paper. Much will be learned through group activities and group process both in class and online. Class time simply cannot be made up outside of class. 10 points per day is deducted for each day missed regardless of reason, make sure you do extra credit to make up for unforeseen absences. If you miss more than two days, you will need to contact me. In most circumstances, please consider making other arrangements so you can always attend class. We meet 20 days over the quarter, missing 8 or more days you will fail the class. CLASSROOM & WAOL ANGEL ETIQUETTE: Since classrooms are also labs for learning appropriate interpersonal relationships for the workplace, we expect mutual courtesy and respect between all individuals. This entails listening skills, not interrupting and refraining from an activity that would distract other students from getting the most out of the educational process. Please vibrate cell or turn phones off. NO TEXTING. Computers in class for note taking ONLY. Summary Writing Guidelines: 1. Use your own words to report only the facts of the article. 2. Do not include your opinion or reaction to the article. 3. Identify the author and title in the first sentence. 4. Refer to the source throughout the summary i.e. According to the article The author states.

Packets: A packet (also known as a module, unit, section, or group of assignments) is basically a way to turn in your work, or a collection of what you have done in the class the past couple weeks. It is easier to manage several assignments turned in together as a packet, then it is to constantly turn work back and forth each day. There are several things listed in each packet. I m Reading my syllabus Bonus!! Ok, if you hadn t read the whole syllabus, you wouldn t have known this! You may opt-out of 3 Try It! s per packet if you wish. (per packet, NOT per chapter!). To qualify you MUST put your own initials on the Professor Check off line of the 3 Try It! s you choose not to do. (Remember, you can only opt out of the Try It! s only!) (Can t opt out of any Journal) DO NOT ask me in class or online about this, otherwise you will give away the secret to all! All other listed assignments are required! Final Portfolio: The final for the course will consist of a portfolio. The portfolio is to be a professional looking binder; a deliverable that you would present to a boss who holds the keys to a pay raise or promotion; neat, clean, and squared away. It will consist of the packets you have completed over the quarter, in-class work, and your reflection paper. The reflection paper will be 2-3 pages, double spaced, 1 inch margins, and 12 font. ALSO upload your reflection paper into my digital drop-box in Angel for full reflection paper points. Students should reflect on: Talk about your experience in the class, addressing both the online and physical course components. How would you describe your responsibility as a student? How did you stay connected with the material that may not have been as interesting? What did you discover about what kinds of learning comes easiest for you and about what challenges you might face in classes? Select 4 concepts from this class that have the greatest relevance and importance to you. Explain the nature of the concept and why it is relevant and important to you. Critically analyze the concept by discussing its essential features. Determine how these concepts can be applied to everyday life. Emergency Procedures for Classrooms Fort Steilacoom Campus Safety (253) 964-6751 Call 911 and then Campus Safety in response to an imminent threat to persons or property. In the event of an evacuation (intermittent horns & strobes), gather all personal belongings and leave the building using the nearest available safe exit. Be prepared to be outside for one hour and stay a minimum of 200 feet from any building or structure. So long as it is safe to do so students are expected to stay on campus and return to class after evacuations that last less than 15 minutes. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed by an Evacuation Director (identified by orange vests) or by three horn blasts or bell rings. Please notify the nearest Campus Safety Officer or Evacuation Director of any one left in the building or in need of assistance.

This requirement will assist you in establishing and keeping a monthly planner. If you currently keep a day planner, you may make a copy to include in this packet. If you do not have a planner, you may photocopy a calendar. Record when tests, reports, assignments, etc. are due for all of your classes over the next three or four weeks. Plan study time in order to show that you are thinking ahead about assignments. Remember to plan in 2-3 hours per week for WAOL online activities! Informational Interview (Due in Packet #4!) The first step in the process of information interviewing is to identify people who are working in the fields that you've decided are interesting to you. It's especially helpful if you know a relative, friend or neighbor involved in the field or at least someone who can refer you to a potential contact; it's always easier to talk to someone whose name is familiar. But, the person you interview may not be a relative. The hardest step is making the first phone call to a stranger or, even worse, a strange firm and asking for the name of a person doing that interesting job! Strangers will be more receptive to talking to you if you demonstrate the following characteristics. 1. Indicated that you are seeking personalized information about their field before you decide to enter it. 2. Confirm the person's job title by asking. 3. Sound enthusiastic and delighted to have reached this person. 4. Refer to the research you've already reviewed about this field or company. 5. Ask if you can have a specific amount of time to interview this person (ex:. 15-20 minutes). 6. Try to arrange the interview at the person's work site, so you can determine firsthand how it might feel to work there. 7. Keep to your agreed upon time frame. Go prepared, dress appropriately, and arrive a bit early. 8. Thank you interviewee, and follow up with a thank-you note. Here is a framework to help you design your information interview. You may think you already have answers to some of the questions, but personal interviews often help flesh out the details and possibly fill in the gaps in your information that you don't realize are there. Try to choose your questions from the general categories of type of business, position descriptions, work environment, benefits, and entrance requirements, as follows: Type of Organization What are the services, products, or functions of the organization? Who utilizes the organization's services or products? Who are the competitors in this field? What sets the company apart or distinguishes it from others in the same industry? What are the projections for future development or new directions? Position Classifications In each division of the organization, what types of positions are available? What are the qualifications for entry-level and experienced positions? Position Descriptions What duties and responsibilities are performed in the area in which you work? What are some examples of projects currently under way and problems currently being solved? What is a typical day like? What interactions do you have with other personnel, data, machines, other departments or other organizations? What are the particular challenges of your position? Work Environment What types of physical localities are involved in your work (outdoors, indoors, travel, etc.) Assignment components: Please include all 3 components in Packet #4 1. Your list of specific questions with the answers you received. 2. Type a one-page summary of the informational interview experience. Include the date, time and place of interview. 3. Write and send a thank-you note to the person you interviewed. Include a copy in your packet.
