THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Degree Program: BACHELOR OF ARTS IN HISTORY (AB HISTORY) MASTER IN HISTORY (NON-THESIS OPTION) The Department of ory of the College of Arts and Social Sciences offers a four (4) year programs for a Bachelor of Arts degree in ory. The department likewise serves other students of the Institute for basic courses such as Philippine ory, ory of the Muslim Filipinos and other Indigenous People of MINSUPALA and the Life and Works of Dr. Jose Rizal. As we approach the 21 st century, events within and outside of the country pose new challenges, especially those obtaining from trends towards globalization. This early, the Philippines is increasingly drawn into larger issues and problems besetting Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific regions and the world in general. These have created needs which the University can address through the intensification of its role as the feeder of top-rate professionals. Globalization, however, has its own demand. From an internationalist perspective, it requires broader knowledge of events outside the country to understand regional trends and patterns. From a nationalist perspective, however, it requires in-depth knowledge of national history to best appraise the role of the country in larger events. The AB ory curriculum intends to answer these needs. In 1999, the AB ory Curriculum was revised to make it more comprehensive, relevant and holistic. The declared aims of the revised curriculum are: 1. To equip the students with historical knowledge and insights that would enable them to face with confidence the challenges of the new millennium; 2. To develop in them basic skills, values and attitudes needed in their day to day lives, and 3. To instill in them a deep sense of social responsibility ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. High School Graduates. To be admitted into the program, high school graduates should have a general weighted average of 85, and must have passing SASE scores for baccalaureate degrees. They must also pass the interview to be conducted by the Department of ory. 2. Transferees. Only transferees from the first to the second year and who have passed the entrance test administered by the University will be admitted to the program. Applicants, after complying with the above requirements, must have a weighted average of 2.0 or better in all history courses taken, and must have a weighted average of 2.5 or better in all academic courses taken. To graduate, a transferee must 2

have at least two years (four semesters) of residence in the Department. The same rule shall apply to shifters from other departments, colleges or campuses of the University System. 3. College Bound Course and College Preparatory Course applicants and pursuers of any technology program of the University shall not be admitted into the program unless they satisfy the conditions set for transferees. If the student fails to comply with these, he will be automatically dismissed from the program. RESIDENCE RULES Maximum Residence Rules. The regular program will take four years or eight semesters to complete, with two years or four semesters of extension. If a student fails to graduate on the sixth year, he is required to enroll in at least twelve units of refresher courses to be determined by the Department of ory. A student shall enroll in ory 198 and ory 199 in the campus where he shall be conferred the baccalaureate degree. ADVANCED CREDIT For transferees form other units of the University, all subjects taken and which are needed will be credited. For transferees from other institutions, only subjects with a grade of 2.0 or better will be automatically credited as long as they have the same course description as those offered by the Department.
