Introduction
Introduction Maybe you re like other moms and dads who ve come to my blog looking to teach their children to learn letters and numbers. Or perhaps you want to give your child the tools to practice letter and number recognition and comprehension. You want to make sure her day includes some sort of a curriculum that includes learning the alphabet. Or maybe you d like her to work on handwriting so she can write on her own. Letters and Numbers helps you with this and much more. Like many parents, I bought physical workbooks to practice letters and numbers with all three of my boys to supplement what they d been learning in school. Except I found the workbooks too distracting. I wanted to focus on the letters and numbers, not on illustrations or confusing dashes and lines. I also wanted to keep working on a particular letter or number over and over. The workbooks I bought only had one or two pages of the same letter. We had a difficult time improving if we could only practice the same letter once or twice. I decided to fix the problem by creating my own worksheets based on how children would best use them to master letters and numbers. This meant: Stripping away distractions and focusing on the letter or number. Making each row easy to understand by differentiating among the guides, the dashed lines, and the baseline. Offering three sizes of the same letter or number to accommodate different levels. Including guided and independent writing. 2
Introduction Designing the worksheets for children to use and learn, not what we think workbooks for children should look like. Creating the workbook as a digital file so you can print and practice as often as your child needs. I designed and compiled all these worksheets into this workbook. And they work for different age levels from the preschooler learning the alphabet to the kindergartener fine-tuning her handwriting. Letters and Numbers isn t just worksheets, either. I include five extensive handouts with strategies to help you teach your child. You ll get actionable tips on how to make learning enjoyable and effective. You ll encourage early literacy and a love of learning. You ll learn how to praise with a growth mindset as well as embrace the mistakes and struggles your child makes. Not only do I want your child to recognize letters and numbers, I also want to give you the strategies to help her do so. These are the topics I talk about on my blog. For over six years, I ve recorded everything I m learning about being a mom, including how children learn, parenting, and family life. I also wrote a book, Parenting with Purpose, which earned five-star reviews on Amazon and continues to help other parents. More importantly, I m a mom trying to provide her kids with the tools and strategies to best help them learn. Letters and Numbers was my answer, and I hope it can be yours too. 3
