History of ESK Academics Athletics Community Daily Chapel Fine Arts School Dining Technology World Languages

The Episcopal School of Knoxville opened our doors to 28 students in August 1998 as a co-educational Kindergarten through 4th Grade school. Twenty-eight students began their ESK journey on the temporary campus at St. Elizabeth s Episcopal Church. Two years later, following the generosity of an anonymous donor, the school purchased its permanent campus with temporary cottages on 96 acres of West Knox County farmland. By October 2005, the students in grades K-8 witnessed the blessing of the first permanent wing of our Middle School building. Googe Hall added 22,000 square feet complete with a bell tower, dining room, administrative offices, and the Pettway Library and Media Center. The Brewington Family Lower School, for students grades K-5, was completed at the start of the 2010 academic year. The building included a Lower School Director s office, 12 classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and the Clayton Library. A Fine Arts wing, home to the art and music rooms, and a foreign language lab were also part of the new building. Now in our 19th academic year, we are looking toward the future of the school. Expansion of our Lower School and Middle School Programs are our priorities. A state of the art Athletics and Fine Arts Center will house an impressive academic arts building along with providing our Middle School Athletic Program a competitive complex. The athletic building will provide the space for an expansion of our Basketball, Volleyball, and Tennis programs. The Fine Art Program will provide a dedicated space for large-scale portrait projects, public art mural paintings, ceramics, silkscreen design, printing, and stop-motion filmmaking. ESK plans to bridge art and technology program in a MakerLab where students can learn and apply traditional computer-based design, such as 3D printing, hands-on building, and turning their ideas into real life. Music is an integral part of the arts education at ESK. By adding a flexible rehearsal and performance space, we will grow the chorus, string, and concert band programs. History of ESK The mission of The Episcopal School of Knoxville is to prepare JK-8 students for higher education and a lifetime of learning within the context of a loving, inclusive and family-centered community. We enrich our students intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of God and citizens of the world. While ESK continues to grow and change, the principle in which the school was founded will always be true.

Academics Math Science Literature Language Arts Social Studies ESK prides itself on small class sizes combined with talented teachers who nurture our students curiosity and enthusiasm for knowledge. We instill a love of learning which is the educational foundation for the future success of our students. Learning at ESK is challenging, stimulating, and dynamic. We balance a traditional curriculum with innovative and collaborative instruction. ESK s 9:1 student-teacher ratio allows our faculty to give more attention to the students academic, emotional, and social needs. We believe in educating our students mind, body, and spirit by providing instruction in character development, religion, and guidance. Learning expands beyond the traditional classroom in Physical Education, World Language, Art, Music, and Library. ESK s extracurricular activities, clubs, and athletic programs are always evolving to ensure our students receive the best JK-8 education in Knoxville. Starting in Junior Kindergarten, we nurture our students to develop essential core knowledge, enhance critical thinking skills, and effective communication strategies. ESK students succeed in the classroom and are well prepared to be contributing members of the Knoxville community and beyond. By giving students the space, time, and encouragement to discover the joys of learning, ESK prepares students to walk confidently into a high school of their choosing. This is achieved in an active learning environment.

ESK athletics focus uniquely on teaching life skills through competition. ESK students practice sportsmanship on the field and court before, during, and after their athletic events. ESK participates in the KISL (Knoxville Independent School League) but also competes in other leagues depending on the sport. Tennis competes in the GKTA (Greater Knoxville Tennis Association), Cross Country in the KYA (Knoxville Youth Athletics), Volleyball in the K2 Volleyball Club, Swimming in Catholic Youth Swimming, and Soccer matches in the Smoky Mountain Soccer Club. 85% of ESK students participate in an after-school sport before graduation. Many participate in more than one sport. The Episcopal School of Knoxville offers a full range of athletics consisting of over 20 teams in 12 sports throughout the JK-8 program. E SK is unique due to the approach, which emphasizes the teaching of social and emotional skills in a caring learning environment that is safe and secure. Teachers use an evidence-based active learning approach, which promotes healthy student development, enhances motivation and improves academic achievement. The goal of a Tribes school is to engage all teachers, staff, administrators, students and families in working together as a community dedicated to caring for and supporting one another. The Tribes Agreements, visible in each classroom, help us to develop a safe, respectful learning environment. The Tribes process helps students at ESK feel included, appreciated and respected for their differences assuring the healthy development of every child. The Tribes process can be seen and felt throughout the school. In weekly Guidance classes students learn how to live out the Tribes Agreements and actively work on character development that is translated into their daily lives. Tribes Agreements: Honesty Right to Pass Mutual Respect Attentive Listening Appreciations/No put downs Let Go & Move On Community Community Is: l Nuturing l Kind l Creative l Fun Loving l Hands On l Family Centered l Inclusive

no matter where we are in our spiritual journey, we provide a space for each of us to explore what this might mean. The unique culture and mission of ESK comes from our firm foundation in the Episcopal faith and educational tradition. Our Episcopal identity is the basis of our culture and mission and helps students realize their full potential as children of God and citizens of the world. Episcopal School of Knoxville is grounded in academic excellence and is welcoming to all faiths and beliefs. Our students learn to honor all people because we understand that we are all part of God s family. The Episcopal School of Knoxville shares in the Episcopal Identity through school worship, community life, religious study, and social justice. ESK embraces diversity and inclusion and it is evident by our commitment to community service and service learning as an integral part of the life of the school. By weaving these values into the very fabric of our school, The Episcopal School of Knoxville ensures that our mission is built on the foundation of Christian love and guides and challenges all who attend our school as they seek to build lives of genuine meaning, purpose and service in the world. ESK uses a modified version of the Morning Prayer service from The Episcopal Church s Book of Common Prayer to create a developmentally appropriate and uplifting Chapel experience everyday. Students of all backgrounds are invited to sing and pray in ways that honor their own spiritual journeys. Episcopal schools affirm belief in the innate spiritual capacities of all children. Through daily Chapel, we hope to build a community where each child can belong and find companionship and strength for the journey of life. Service Learning At the heart of ESK is true service that comes from within and a commitment to service learning. From Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, students participate in community service. Students learn the joy of working in support of others and for the common good by emphasizing the responsibilities we have as citizens and members of God s created world. Teachers help students relate service projects back to what they are studying in class so our students are able to make connections. Through ESK s community service and our service-based learning curriculum, we help students identify their hearts and their value as citizens of their community and the world. Our Episcopal Identity

Fine Arts Concert Band String Band Chorus & Accapella Group Pottery/Cermanics Claymation/Stop Motion Pencil & Scale Drawings 3D Maker Lab, Silk Screen Printing The Episcopal School of Knoxville believes that immersion in Creative Arts plays a key role in educating our students. The school s Fine Arts program consists of Studio Art, Computer Graphics, Filmmaking, and Music includes chorus, concert, and string band. From Junior Kindergarten students earliest days painting to an Eighth Grader s use of sculpture, music and video to create Claymation, students receive a rich art experience at ESK. In the Studio Art Program, Middle School students are exposed to a variety of mediums such as drawing, painting, balsa foam carving, silkscreen printing, computer 3D modeling, paper and clay sculpture, stop motion filmmaking and others. The Music Program at ESK offers a diverse program of music with exposure to classics, contemporary music and world music. Music curriculum includes singing, dancing, listening, creating, reading music and playing a wide variety of musical instruments. Students play and learn the Orff music methodology, which consists of drum circles, xylophones, and Glockenspiels.

Technology enriches every classroom at ESK. Teachers use interactive whiteboards and enhanced media providing access to resources well beyond the traditional classroom. A robust network infrastructure and a high-capacity internet connection support a campus-wide wireless network that puts the world s knowledge at our students fingertips. Technology Flexibility and platform variety are key components of ESK s technology program: the Kindergarten through 2nd grade students utilize ipads as a familiar and intuitive way to incorporate digital resources in the classroom. The 3rd through 5th grade students utilize small portable notebook computers that run Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). With the addition of a keyboard and appropriate instruction, students are trained to use a personal computer efficiently and effectively. ESK is expanding its technology program to incorporate modern trends in educational technology. The Middle School are required to maintain a device to access curriculum materials for use in research, creativity, and the presentation of projects designed around Literature, Language Arts, and History.

School Dining When students go through the lunch line at ESK, the rich fresh colors and smell of homemade foods entices even the pickiest eater. On a daily basis, students are given the option of sandwiches on fresh bread, a freshly made hot entrée, as well as an array of crunchy raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Menus are created on the ESK campus, specifically designed for our dining facility and our community needs. Flik provides information on dietary concerns such as allergies, celiac disease, and food sensitivities. They also offer vegan and vegetarian options. Flik prepares our food from whole fresh ingredients, limiting the use of processed foods and avoiding dishes containing artificial flavorings, M.S.G., preservatives and high levels of sodium. Flik uses minimal amounts of fat in food preparation. Students participate in the Clean Plate Project. The program is sponsored by Flik Independent Dining and is aimed at reducing food waste among our students. The hope is to increase awareness among students about food waste at each meal and to encourage students to significantly reduce the amount of food waste on our campus.

we enrich our students intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual growth so that they may realize their potential as children of god & citizens of the world We enrich our students intellectual, physical, cultural, and spiritual growth so they may realize their potential as children of God and citizen of the world. World Language study at ESK immerses children into a range of foreign languages from their earliest days. Lower School students gradually grow confident and competent in world language and prepare to express themselves in a meaningful way as Middle School students. Even Junior Kindergarten students are learning songs and playing games as a way to learn about the cultures of Spanish and Mandarin speaking people. In Middle School, students choose between Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese as a core subject. By the end of Eighth Grade, students have gained proficiency in one world language, which is equivalent to one year of study in high school. World Languages

The Episcopal School of Knoxville s academic programs place student growth in these skill areas at the center of our education. ESK s commitment to and nurture individual growth requires that we, as a school, take the time to listen to our students, help them understand their personal strengths, and to encourage them to take advantage of the many opportunities for growth beyond the doors of ESK.
