Part 2. Improving model answers Read these 4 model answers. Using the markscheme, say what mark the answers is currently, and then try to improve it to a full mark answer. Unit 1: Describe the Key features of the Hungarian Uprising. [6] The Hungarian uprising happened in 1956. Hungarians were unhappy with Soviet control and they wanted a change. Rakosi took over and made changes that the USSR didn t like, so they got rid of him and got control again. Mark given = 1 3 Simple statement(s). 1 mark for one simple statement. 2 marks for two simple statements. 3 marks for three or more simple statements 4 6 Developed statement(s). (A developed statement is a simple statement supported by factual detail.) 4 5 marks for one developed statement, according to degree of support. 5 6 marks for two or more developed statements Unit 1: How useful are Sources B and C as evidence of the reasons for the USA s blockade of Cuba in October 1962? [10] Source B is useful because it shows what the USA President thinks, so why their relationship was tense. However, it s only one man s opinion so it s less useful. Source C is useful because it tells us why the Americans were annoyed with Cuba and why they blockaded them. Mark given = 1 3 Judgement based on simple valid criteria. Unit 2: Explain the effects of the Treaty of Versailles on Germany between 1919-1923. [8] The Treaty of Versailles affected Germany in lots of ways. One way was economic reasons. For example, the treaty caused the occupation of the Ruhr, with caused hyperinflation. This meant Germany had lots of problems with money. Another way the Treaty of Versailles affected Germany as through political problems. For example, the Germans called the Weimar Government the November Criminals. This showed they didn t like them. Another way it affected Germany was their pride. Mark given = 1-2 Simple or generalised statement(s) of causation/consequence. One mark per simple statement made. 1 mark for one simple or generalised statement. 2 marks for two or more simple or generalised statements. 3-5 Developed statement(s) of causation/consequence. Unit 3: Use source C and your own knowledge to explain why the Labour Party won the general election of 1945. [10] Source C says they won the election because they promised that wealth would no longer be the passport to the best health treatment. Task 5: Exam technique Do this for both the sets of questions for Unit 1 and Unit 2. Use the exam structure cheat sheet to help you. 1. Read through the questions. 2. Use a highlighter to highlight WHAT the qu is asking you to do. 3. Underline the TOPIC/SUBJECT of the question- what is it asking you about? 4. Write underneath/near the qu- HOW should you answer each question? What structure should you use? 5. Put a tick next to the 2 questions you feel most confident answering. 6. Put a cross on the question you feel least confident answering. 7. Bullet point key terms/ pieces of information you would use to answer each qu. You must note down something for every question, even if you re not sure! 8. Answer the question you are least confident on for each paper.

Unit 2: Germany 1919-39 (a) Study Source A. What can you learn from Source A about the reasons for the failure of the Spartacist uprising of January 1919? (4) Source A: From a history of Germany, published in 1996. The Spartacists tried to seize power on 5 January 1919 but they were doomed to failure. The day before they began their rising, Ebert created a volunteer force of 4,000 soldiers. Known as the Free Corps, they were hard men who hated communists and liked a fight. They were well disciplined, fully equipped and ruthless. They retook all the Spartacist-occupied buildings in Berlin and captured and shot the two Spartacist leaders.
