Diploma in Management Studies The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a Diploma in Management Studies (DMS), which is specially designed for aspiring learners to obtain a progression diploma followed by a bachelor's degree in about 4 years of part-time study. Programme Aim The DMS programme aims to equip students with the basic management skills as well as knowledge required in the workplace, and to prepare them for further study. Programme Features Direct study route A direct route for working adults to obtain a progression diploma followed by a bachelor's degree in as short as 4 years on a part-time basis. Specialisations A wide range of specialisations are designed to facilitate students further studies. Balance of techniques A combination of basic management knowledge and critical problem-solving skills for further studies as well as career enhancement. Soft-skills Soft-skill workshops are arranged to motivate students in the learning environment and at the workplace. Credit transfer Credit transfer can be granted to students holding appropriate qualifications. SCOPE DMS PART 1 Foundation Certificate in Management Studies (FCMS) Part 1 is designed to prepare school leavers with work experience to undertake study again after being away from formal education for a number of years. It will enrich students basic business concepts and academic writing skills, thus enabling them to pursue study at the next level. Programme Structure Modules (9 credit units) Introduction to Business Organisations Business and Its Environment Mastering English in Business I Entrance Requirements 1. Five subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, including Chinese Language and English Language ( Syllabus B before 2007) at level 2 / Grade E or above, and passes 3 other subjects plus at least 3 years of full-time work experience; or 2. Yi Jin graduates plus at least 3 years of full-time work experience; or 2. Mature applicants of at least 21 years of age by the start date of the programme, and have at least 3 years of fulltime work experience. Shortlisted applicants may be invited for a written test and interview. Medium of Instruction English, supplemented with Cantonese Assessment and Award Assessment consists of a combination of coursework and examination. If not proceeding to Part 2, a student will be awarded a Continuing Education Certificate in Management Studies upon successful completion of Part 1. Progression Opportunity Students who successfully complete Part 1 will proceed to Part 2 of the programme. Classes There are approximately 9 hours of class per week (normally 2 weekday evenings and 1 weekend afternoon or/and evening). Module Descriptions (core modules) Business and Its Environment Provide students with a solid foundation for understanding of the business environment, the nature and structure of modern business organization and various business functions. Business Law Provide students with a basic understanding of the legal system and particularly the law related to business in Hong Kong. Business Statistics Introduce to students the basic concepts and applications of statistics used in business, with an emphasis on interpretation of output rather with various statistical methods and calculations for management decisions. Economics for Business Provide students with knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics so that they can apply those theories in analyzing the behavior of consumers, firms strategies and the impacts of government economic policies on the whole economy. Information Systems for Business Provide students with a solid foundation for understanding the key functions of information technology applications in business organizations. International Business Provide students with an understanding of the growth of international business and impacts of globalization. The course also aims to equip students with skills and knowledge in managing international business. Introduction to Business Organizations Provide students with a solid foundation for understanding the key concepts of management in organizational structure & development and the various management functions in marketing, production, human resources, information management and accounting and finance in modern business organizations. Introduction to Marketing Introduce the basic marketing concepts and the four key areas of marketing, with emphasis on the integration of these areas and their application to formulating an effective marketing strategy. Mastering English in Business I Provide students with English language skills for business communication. The skills will cover language structure, business vocabulary, tone and style of business writing, and techniques of public speaking. The content will include business presentation, emails, and proposals. Mastering English in Business II Improve students English proficiency for managerial employment and further studies in business. Students will acquire proper vocabulary, language structures, tones, styles and etiquette for business writing and presentation to cater for different types of audience in the contemporary business environment. Principles of Accounting Provide students with a basic understanding of the accounting system, accounting principles and accounting statements. It also enables the students to compile and analyze the statements. Principles of Management Provide students a basic understanding of the key management functions that are used in business organizations. Students will be able to take a comprehensive look of the managers job and how managers could effectively lead their teams to meet business challenges. Thinking and Communicating Skills Develop students thinking and communicating skills for effective life-learning and career development.
