Introduction: The Institute of Medicine (IoM) was established in Kathmandu in 192 under Tribhuvan University. It is the pioneer medical institution of the country established with the mandate to produce various categories of human resources needed for the country in health sector. Gradually the institute is handing over the junior level courses to the other institutions and has been focusing on bachelor, masters and post masters courses. Entries in these courses are purely on the basis of merit in the entrance examination conducted by Examination division of Institute of Medicine. Minimum Qualifications for MD/MS A. FOR NEPALESE CITIZENS Education: A minimum of M.B.B.S. (or an equivalent Medical Graduation) recognized by Tribhuvan University and the registration with Nepal Medical Council after successful completion of the compulsory 12 months Internship. B. FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS Education: A minimum of M.B.B.S. (or an equivalent Medical Graduation) recognized by Tribhuvan University, and a registration with the Medical Council in their own country after successful completion of the compulsory 12 months Internship. Categories: A. FOR NEPALESE CITIZENS There is provision of three categories for Nepalese citizens: 1. Open (General + Paying) 2. MOHP 3. Organizational A candidate will be eligible to compete for only one category. 1. OPEN (GENERAL+PAYING) CATEGORY Nepalese citizens fulfilling minimum qualifications are allowed to compete for these seats. Those selected under the 'general category' will have to pay the regular fees, whereas those under the 'paying category' will have to pay tuition and other fees as per the regulations of the Dean s Office, Institute of Medicine at the time of admission. 2. MINISTRY OF HEALTH (MOHP) SPONSORED The candidates in this category must submit letters of recommendation stating authorization and eligibility from the MOHP at the time of collection of admit card. Letters submitted late will not be considered valid. The regulations for these candidates are as follows: 1. Letter of authorization along with the letter regarding marks awarded by MOHP have to be submitted at the time of collection of admit card. 2. The entrance examination will carry 80% weightage whereas 20% weightage will be carried by marks awarded by MOHP. 3. For inclusion in merit list, a minimum of 50% has to be secured after combining the marks of both the entrance examinations and the marks awarded by MOHP. 3. ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORED Those Hospitals/Organizations having bilateral agreement with Institute of Medicine will only be provided with the sponsor seats as per the agreement. Nepalese citizens fulfilling minimum requirements are allowed to compete for these seats. The candidates are required to submit letters of recommendation from the institution at the time of collection of admit card. Letters submitted late will not be considered valid. The fees of these candidates will be borne as per the contract of the candidates with the sponsoring organization. B. FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS Foreign nationals fulfilling minimum qualifications are allowed to compete for these seats. The fees of these candidates will be borne by the applicant himself / herself. The fee structure for foreign nationals is subject to change and is set as per the regulations of the Dean s Office, Institute of Medicine. If the nationality of any candidate is brought under question at any time during / after admission, decisions would be taken under the prevailing laws of the land. Process of Application: The application forms for both Nepalese and foreign nationals will be available in the official website of the Dean s Office, Maharajgunj [www.iom.edu.np]. Application Forms are to be submitted online and a confirmation note as mentioned during the submission of application form has to be printed. For collection of Admit Card, the applicant must come with the following documents: 1. Printed copy of application confirmation note 2. Original identification document mentioned in the application (the citizenship card or passport) 3. Original bank voucher of Rs. 3,600 (In words, Rupees three thousands six hundred only) deposited in the account named Entrance Exam TU IOM Dean Office Current Account Number 002 005555 005 in any branch of Himalayan Bank Limited. 4. Authorization/sponsorship letter from the employer along with official marks (as applicable) Postgraduate Entrance Examination The Postgraduate Entrance Examination will consist of 200 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) for MD/MS and MDS programmes. All other postgraduate programmes will consist of 100 MCQs. The paper will be based on the pre requisite knowledge pertaining to the respective bachelor level programmes. Each question will have four alternatives with only one correct answer. The candidates are required to mark on only the SINGLE BEST option out of the four alternatives. Marking on more than one answer will automatically be considered invalid. Each question will carry one mark. There will be no negative marking for wrong answers. Duration of the examination will be 4 hours for MD/MS and MDS Entrance examinations. For all other postgraduate programmes, the duration of examination will be of 2 hours. Pass mark of the entrance examination is Fifty percent of the full mark. Rules of the Entrance Examination: 1. All the candidates are required to bring their Admit Card. No candidates will be allowed to take the examination without producing the Admit Card. In case of loss of admit card, examinee should submit application with one passport size photo and NRs 150/ not later than the day before the examination in order get new admit card. 2. Candidates are required to be seated on their respective seats 15 minutes before the commencement of examination. They will not be allowed to sit in the exam after 15 minutes of commencement of the entrance examination. The Institute is not responsible for any unforeseen events preventing the candidate from reaching the Examination Hall. 3. Any text book, references, note copy, guidebook or printed materials are not allowed to take inside the examination hall/room. Postgraduate Entrance Examination 2012 Page 5
4. Cell Phones, Pagers or Calculators are strictly prohibited in the examination hall. Please arrange to keep them outside. The institute does not bear any liability for the loss of the above mentioned. 5. Examinee should use Black Gel Pen during entrance examination. Uses of pencils, tipex/correcting fluid etc. are not allowed. 6. Examinees should select a correct answer by filling the empty bubble with black gel pen.. All the candidates are advised not to copy any of the questions on a piece of paper or on their hands etc. If found copying the questions, the candidates will be booked under the 'Unfair Means Case' and his examination will be cancelled. 8. Examinee should not leave the examination hall without permission of the superintendent/invigilators. 9. Examinee is not allowed to talk or discuss among each other during entrance examination 10. Examinee must submit both question and answer sheets at the end of the examination. Thereafter, they will not be allowed to reenter the examination hall/room. Any breach of examination rules is punishable. Caution! In case any candidate is found to have supplied false information, or is found to have withheld or concealed information in his/her Application Form, he/she will be debarred from admission and if already admitted, the admission will be cancelled. Examination Results: A merit list will be published according to the marks obtained in the entrance examination and the marks awarded by the employer (as applicable). Counseling: After the publication of entrance examination results, successful candidates are advised to sit in the counseling session. No individual intimation will be sent to candidates who are not selected and no correspondence on this subject will be entertained. The successful candidate will be allowed to choose his/her seat in respective postgraduate programme on the basis of the merit list in the entrance examination. The successful candidate must be present at the time of counseling to choose the specialty. Representatives of the candidates will not be entertained. The Institute is not responsible for any unforeseen events preventing the candidate from reaching the venue for counseling and the candidate will be considered absent under such circumstances. Open (General +Paying) MOH / Sponsors Foreign Candidates Counseling Counseling Counseling Admissions need to be completed within the next five days, before the seats are carried over to the second counseling session in respective categories. There is no provision of Waiting list. 2 nd Counseling 2 nd Counseling 2 nd Counseling Admissions need to be completed within the next five days, before the remaining seats are carried over to the third counseling session. 3rd Counseling Second counseling will be done if the seat is left vacant due to non admission after the first counseling. Only those candidates who have not chosen any seat in the first counseling will be eligible to participate. A candidate who fails to take admission within the due date after committing for the admission in the chosen programme will not be eligible for any further counseling during this academic year. If seat of open general category is left vacant after 1 st counseling, the seat will still fall under the same category. All the seats remaining vacant even after the second counseling will be converted into paying category. Thus all the candidates selected on merit basis in the third counseling will fall under 'Paying category'. No further admissions will be conducted after 30 days of commencement of academic session and the remaining seats will remain vacant. All notices concerning admissions will be posted at the notice board of the Dean's office, Institute of Medicine.
