PROSPECTUS FOR ADMISSION TO POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA COURSE IN DIALYSIS TECHNOLOGY (PGDDT)- 2007 (Approved by G.O(Rt) No 603/08/H&FWD dated:18-02-2008 No. B3/16651/2007/DME I. PREFACE The Director of Medical Education, Kerala State, invites applications for admission to the Post-graduate Diploma Course in Dialysis Technology (PGDDT) in the following institutions. The total number of seats will be 19 (Nineteen). The Director of Medical Education makes the selection and allotment for all the nineteen seats. (a) Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram - 6 (b) Government Medical College, Kottayam - 5 (c) Lissie Medical& Education Institute, Ernakulam - 5 II. ELIGIBILITY (d) Lourds Hospital, Kochi, Ernakulam. - 3 Academic: Candidates should have passed BSc (MLT) / BSc (Physics) / BSc (Chemistry) / BSc (Zoology) / BSc (Nursing) from the University of Kerala or equivalent degree from other Universities, recognized by the University of Kerala. The applicant should have not less than 55% marks in the examination or equivalent recognized degree. Nativity: Only Indian citizens of Kerala origin are eligible for admission to the course. Candidates, in order to prove that they are Indian citizens of Kerala origin, shall have to produce any one of the following certificates. (i). Certificate from the Village Officer/ Tahsildar to show that he/she or his/her mother/ father was born in Kerala. III. AGE: (ii). A Certificate from the Village officer/ Tahsildar to the effect that the candidate has been a resident of Kerala State for a period of 7 years with in a continuous period of 15 years. The lower age limit will be 20 years and upper age limit will be 30 years as on 31.12.2007. IV. DURATION OF THE COURSE Syllabus It is a two-year course that comprises of didactic course and training in various aspects of dialysis for a period of one year. On successful completion of the examination, the candidate will undergo one-year training in the same institution and not allowed transfer to another institution during the period of internship. The diploma will be awarded on successful completion of internship. The syllabus will consist of: 1. General Orientation in Nephrology

2. History and evolution of Dialysis 3. Principles of Dialysis-Diffusion, Osmosis, Ultra filtration 4. Principles of Sterilization and sterile precautions. 5. Vascular access for dialysis - Temporary/Permanent - Catheters, Shunts, Grafts - Jugular, Subclavian, Femoral - AV fistulas 6. Anti coagulation in hemodialysis, heparin and substitutes and heparin free dialysis. 7. Functions of dialysis monitors and principles of its working. - Acetate - Bicarbonate - Volumetric ultra filtration - Multi patient monitors 8. Artificial kidney evolution and types 9. Dialysis reuse, dialysis handling, disinfection and disposal 10. Water quality and water treatment for dialysis 11. Complications of dialysis-short term and long term 12. Recent advances in dialysis 13. Hemoperfusion and dialysis in poisonings 14. Continuous renal replacement therapy, plasma exchange and use of blood products. 15. Infection diseases and transmission of disease through dialysis. 16. Acute renal failure 17. Chromic renal failure 18. Laboratory investigations in relation to dialysis 19. Basics of renal transplantation 20. Recent advances in Nephrology and transplantation Course Content The course will consist of: 1) Lectures by members of the faculty in the Department of Nephrology and related specialities - 4 Hrs/ week x 52 weeks = 156 hrs 2) Lectures by Dialysis Technicians - 6 Hrs/ week x 52 weeks = 312 hrs 3) Practical training and work in Dialysis room and intensive care - 36 Hrs/ week x 52 weeks = 1872 hrs 4) Topic presentations and project work by students - 2 Hrs / week x 52 weeks = 104 hrs 5) The student will also be called up to assist in emergency procedures 6) Internship for a period of one year. V. Application form: Application forms can be had from the Principals of State Medical Colleges on payment of the prescribed application fee. The application fee is Rs. 200/- at the cash counter or Rs.240/- by money order, for which a receipt will be issued in T.R. Form No.5. Money order coupon, not containing the full address of the applicant will not be accepted. Money Orders will be accepted in the offices of the Principals only up to five working days prior to the last date. Postal Orders, Cheques, and drafts will not be accepted.

VI. How and when to apply: Application form, correctly filled in together with the following documents should reach the Director of Medical Education, Medical College Campus, Thiruvananthapuram-695011 on or before the last date fixed for the receipt of applications. The attested true copies of the following documents should accompany the application form. 1. Relevant pages of the SSLC or equivalent certificate to prove date of birth 2. Degree Certificate and mark lists of appropriate BSc degree course [BSc (MLT), BSc (Chemistry), BSc (Physics), BSc (Zoology), BSc (Nursing)] of the University of Kerala or equivalent university recognised by the University of Kerala. 3. Course and Conduct Certificate from the Head of the Institution where the applicant studied last. 4. Certificate of residence or ownership or possession of landed property or house from the Village Officer / Tahsildar concerned or the Certificate of Education from the Head of the Educational Institution concerned (to be obtained in the application form). 5. Receipt issued towards the cost of application form in original 6. One passport size photograph (to be affixed at the space provided in the application form) 7. community and income certificate obtained from Village Officer in the case of Other Backward Communities. Late and defective application will not be considered under any circumstance. No claim arising out of any belated furnishing of documents or details shall be entertained. The candidates will have to produce on demand any other certificate/record they may have, prescribed by Government, in addition to those already specified above. Application together with all the documents mentioned above should be sent by Registered Post, or by hand to the Director of Medical Education, Medical College Campus, Thiruvananthapuram-695011, before the date and time specified by the Director of Medical Education. The envelope should be super-scribed Application for PGDDT Course for the year 2007. a. The Director of Medical Education, Thiruvananthapuram is empowered to refuse admission if he/she is not satisfied with the correctness or genuineness of any certificate filed along with the application form. The decision of the Director of Medical Education in this regard will be final. b. Admission, even if given, will be cancelled if it is found later that false certificates have been produced or that admission has been secured by fraudulent means. VII. Selection: Admission to all seats shall be made on merit based on the percentage of aggregate marks scored by the candidates in the qualifying BSc examination allowing the mandatory reservation principle. In case there is tie in the aggregate % of marks in the qualifying examination the candidate, who is older will be selected. The percentage break up of seats as per mandatory reservation is as follows.

i) State Merit - 65% ii) SEBC - 25% Ezhava - 9% Muslim - 8% OBH - 5% LCOA - 2% OBX - 1% iii) SC/ST - 10% SC - 8% ST - 2% (a) Selection of candidates will be made by the Committee consisting of the Director of Medical Education, Principal, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, Professor and Head, Department of Nephrology, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. (b) The select list and wait list will be published by the Director of Medical Education, Kerala. (c) The decision of Selection committee will be final (d) The rank list will be valid for 3 months from the date of publication of rank list. The seats if any remaining vacant after this date will be considered as lapsed.. VIII. Fees (a) Course fee: For Ist year Tuition fee - Rs. 2400 Stationary fee - Rs. 250 Laboratory fee - Rs. 250 Caution deposit - Rs. 500 Rs. 3400 (b) Examination fee: 1 st Appearance - Rs. 1000 Mark list - Rs. 200 Certificate fee - Rs. 200 Rs. 1400 Fee for supplementary - Rs. 1500 examination Mark list - Rs. 200 Certificate fee - Rs. 200 Rs. 1900 Note: Fee remitted except caution deposit will not be refunded Allocation of seats (1) Two seats reserved for BSc MLT graduates (2) Two seats reserved for BSc Science graduates.

(3) One seat for BSc Nursing graduate. Rank will be prepared according to the highest marks obtained in the Optional Subjects. Marks will be calculated a maximum of 1000. Note: If there is no eligible applicant under BSc MLT quota or BSc Nursing the remaining seats will be transferred to BSc Science graduates quota. If there are no applicants in the B.Sc Science quota, the seats will be transferred to BSc MLT followed by BSc Nursing candidates. XI. Medical check-up: Candidates provisionally selected for admission to the course shall undergo a thorough medical check-up in the manner prescribed by the Principal of the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Certificate of successful vaccination against Hepatitis B must be submitted and the candidate will be screened for Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C. If not successfully vaccinated, the first dose of vaccine should be taken prior to admission. Candidates found medically unfit will not be admitted to the course. The decision of the Director of Medical Education in the matter of disqualification of candidates on medical grounds shall be final. XII. Discipline: Before admission, the select candidate should submit a declaration regarding observance of discipline in the form given, duly signed by him/her and attested by his/her parent/guardian as the case may be. Admission will be refused if this declaration is not produced. XIII. Accommodation: Selected candidates may have to find their own boarding and lodging facilities. XIV. Examination: (a) Sessional examination: One mid term sessional examination consisting of theory and practical in the same manner as the final examination (except for external examiners for practical) will be held. Only candidates who have secured 40 % marks or above will be allowed to take the final examination. (b) Final Examination shall consist of two theory papers 3 hours each with maximum marks 100 in each paper. Paper I Fundamentals of Nephrology and dialysis technology - 100 marks (3 hrs) Paper II Recent advance in Nephrology and dialysis technology - 100 marks (3 hrs) Minimum marks for pass 50% in final theory and aggregate of 50% for sessional and final theory examination. The evaluation of answer papers, the evaluation of dissertation, practical examination and viva voce exam will be conducted by the Board of Examiners. JDME (M) is the Chairman Board of Examiners and Head of Department of Nephrology will be the Convenor/ Course Co-ordinator.

(c) Practical examination will be held where the candidate will be asked to demonstrate the various procedures relating to dialysis technology followed by viva voce for a total of 100 marks. A candidate will be declared as pass if 50% marks are obtained for final practical and aggregate of 50% for sessional and final practical examinations. The theory and practical examinations will be conducted at any time after 10 months of commencement of the course and the results announced on the date of completion of one year. (d) Log Book: The candidate should maintain a log book containing procedures undertaken, topics presented and conferences attended. The log book approved by the internal examiner should be valued by the external examiners during the practical examination. A minimum of 50% should be pass mark for logbook. (e) Final grading: The candidate will be eligible for pass if he secures 50% of marks for sessional and final examination for theory and clinical separately. They should get at least 50% marks each for theory and practical in the final examination. Grading will be as follows depending on marks secured in sessional and final examination. Marks: 50-64% - Pass 65-79% - First class >80 % - First class with distinction XV. Execution of Bond: The applicants selected to the course will have to execute a bond in Rs.50 Kerala Stamp paper at the time of admission to the effect that he/she shall pay to Government, in event of his/her discontinuing the course at any time after one month from the date of admission to the course a sum of Rs.10000 (Rupees Ten thousand only) and the stipend (if any) already claimed. After successful completion of the course, the candidate will serve the Government of Kerala if posted as Lab Assistant (Dialysis) in any government hospital for 2 years failing which a sum of Rupees thirty thousand only shall be paid to the Government as liquidated damages. A separate bond may be executed to this effect at the time of joining the course. XVI. Date of Commencement of the course: Date of commencement of the course for each year will be announced by the Director of Medical Education and complete 12 months after commencement. XVII. Attendance:

The candidates will be eligible to appear for the respective examination if he/she acquires a minimum of 80% of attendance reckoned from the date of commencement of the course. 80% attendance is mandatory for both theory and practical classes only 20 days leave will be allowed during the period of study and the period of internship. This prospectus is subject to further modification/addition as may be considered necessary by the Government and will be issued as executive orders/notification. Notwithstanding anything contained in this prospectus, Government may at any time on their own volition or otherwise, after calling for the records of the case, amend or revise any order passed by a subordinate authority.
