Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Aviation Management (Full-time) 2 Coventry University in the United Kingdom, through the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a one-year, full-time programme leading to the BSc (Hons) in Aviation Management. There were over 100 full-time and part-time students studying on this programme in 2015-16. Over 210 graduates successfully completed the whole programme in the previous 2 years. Coventry University The history of Coventry University can be traced back over 170 years. The academic structure of the University comprises four faculties: Faculty of Engineering Environment and Computing; Faculty of Business and Law; Faculty of Health and Life Sciences; and Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Currently around 24,000 students are studying at Coventry University. There are about 200 academic staff and 150 support staff in Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. Programme Aims and Objectives The aims of the programme are: To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to deal with management problems in aviation-related industries through exploring the inter-dependence between air transport and logistics operations; To give particular emphasis to the use of analytical techniques in tackling current and future issues in the industry from an international perspective; To enhance students lifelong learning skills for personal development and contribution to the society at large. Career Prospects Knowledge from Aviation Management is applicable in a wide range of job positions and industries. Career options range from airline marketing, business analyst for airports and airlines, management planning for airlines, logistics and supplier industry as well as related jobs. A typical route for some graduates is to start their careers as ground handling officers. Graduation Ceremony 2017 of BSc (Hons) Aviation Management

Student Support from CityU Teaching will be delivered mainly by CityU full-time academic staff and experienced industry practitioners with input to teaching from Coventry University. The programme will be held at SCOPE Kowloon Tong Learning Centre and SCOPE Tsim Sha Tsui East Learning Centre. Students will be provided with access to CityU s Library (including electronic resources) and Computing Services Centre located on campus. Students can also utilize the Resources Centre managed by CityU SCOPE at its Learning Centres. Programme Structure* The programme structure consists of core modules. In order to further benefit the students, two Add-vantage modules focusing on key transferrable skills of English and communication are designed to improve students employability. To fulfill the learning outcomes of the programme, tailor-made module combination will be provided for students graduated from aviation/airport operations and from logistics disciplines. Students will be exposed to different types of essay and the language necessary to succeed in writing them. They will further develop their ability to recognise the different types of academic essay and the features of language typically used within these structures. Students will also be encouraged to extend their awareness of style and register, allowing them to further explore the difference between language use and meaning in context. 205EKM Aircraft Maintenance Management This module aims to enhance students theoretical and practical experience of the aircraft maintenance management by introducing the basic theories of aircraft maintenance engineering and maintenance program management, Students understand the current trends in Aviation MRO industry. Students will also be made aware of the human factors element within the maintenance engineering. 207KM Transport and Logistics Management The module will enable students to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of transportation, supply chain management (SCM) and logistics management. They will learn the objectives of efficient transportation, SCM including achieving high productivity, high quality and seamless transfer of information, products and services between each stage of the supply chain and ultimately to the satisfaction of the customer. 298EKM Aviation Safety, Security and Emergency Planning The module explores current approaches through applicable regulations to aviation safety and security, Safety Management Systems (SMS), human factors and the use of technology to safety and security issues applicable to aircraft, airports, flights and airline operations. It further considers essential procedures for coping with air and ground emergencies and includes an Emergency Response Planning workshop. 4

301CES Effective Communication Skills 3 This module offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge, understanding and practice of a variety of effective communications skills and techniques. Students will learn how to develop and hone their personal communication skills to enhance their own performance and the performance of others. Students will have the opportunity to practise these skills in a safe, informal learning environment. 307AAE Individual Project Preparation The aim of this module is to provide preparation for a student to undertake a substantial project which will exercise in-depth technical, problem-solving, creative and other skills required of a professional practitioner including working to appropriate ethical codes of practice. 308AAE Individual Project Realisation This module will enable students to undertake a substantial project which will exercise in-depth technical, problemsolving, creative and other skills required of a professional practitioner including working to appropriate ethical codes of practice. 351EM Project Management This module introduces learners to project management and equips them with skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to lead and work on a variety of projects. The importance of de facto project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards is emphasised, however, learners are encouraged from the outset to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, understanding where projects come from and why they are selected. The module also covers the use of Project Management software for creating, analysing, and monitoring projects. 392EKM Aviation Strategy and Planning The module explores the application of business strategy principles and practice in the aviation industry with specific reference to current developments in the ownership and operation of international and national airline and airport businesses. 395AAE Human Factors in Aviation This module aims to develop a broad understanding of the area of Human Factors and the application of the concepts within the aviation industry. This is achieved through the study of the human systems integration approach, fundamentals of applied psychology and human factors, organisational/non-technical skills, decision making and human error, human factors engineering, performance shaping factors, and an introduction to introductory human factors methods. 396EM Airline Operations and Scheduling This module aims to enable students to understand, analyze and improve airline operations and planning related to the airline dynamic environment. It adopts a practical approach to outline the functions, processes and relationships of airline operations. The various factors that affect the operations and management of international and regional airlines have been analysed. It introduces both simulation and analytical techniques and/or methods relevant for optimising airline network flow and scheduling, route structure and planning, fleet planning and assignment, crew scheduling, maintenance scheduling, gate assignment and aircraft load planning. 5

Programme Delivery The programme will normally span over 3 trimesters (for students who need to take 150 to 180 credits). Each trimester follows a regular structure of 12 weeks. Lecturers from Coventry University play an important role in preparing the students for the Honours Degree Project. They work alongside academic staff from CityU so as to ensure the students best chance of success. Assessment The assessment of students is by means of coursework and examinations. The weighting of these two components varies among modules. Exemptions i. Graduates of Community College of City University AD in Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics (AOAL) will be granted exemption from 207KM Transport and Logistics Management (20 credits) and 293DEL Higher Intermediate English: Academic Essay Writing (10 credits). ii. Graduates of HKUSPACE HD in Aviation Studies (HDAS) will be granted exemption from 298EKM Aviation Safety, Security and Emergency Planning (20 credits). Admission Requirements Each applicant must hold one of the following qualifications to be considered for admission: a) Associate Degree, Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification in aviation discipline; OR b) Associate Degree, Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification in logistics-related discipline with coverage in airport operations, air transportation, and business; OR c) Associate Degree, Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification in other disciplines PLUS at least three years of relevant work experience in aviation or logistics industry; OR d) Either one of the following professional licenses: i. Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) License (HKAR-66 or equivalent), ii. Commercial Pilot License (CPL)/Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL) issued by an ICAO Contracting State PLUS at least two years of aviation work experience. e) Students who do not possess the above qualifications but have a leadership role in aviation or logistics related disciplines will be considered on a case-bycase basis. Applicants, whose first language is not English or whose previous qualifications were not taught and assessed in English must provide evidence of proficiency in English Language by achieving at least IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent qualification.
